1 out of 5 eggsSAS not SATA

Pros: None

Cons: SAS not SATA drive
Newegg does not sell any SAS to SATA cables
Wasted 10 hours trying to get to work

Other Thoughts: I am not sure why this is rated so high. One of the reviewers gave it 4 starts altough it never worked.
I admit I purchased without reading the fine print that it is a SAS drive.
SAS to SATA cables are pretty rare even on the internet shopping world. None that are highly rated. I purchased a conversion cable and it could not get the drive to work.
I will send the SAS drive back.
A terrible experience.

4 out of 5 eggsNot showing up in windows or bios

Pros: Very reliable drive

Cons: No manual at all telling you how to properly set it up, but I'm guessing SATA power isn't the way to go.

Other Thoughts: Just got around to plugging this beast in. Bought this in early feb, so I probably can't exchange it for a different style drive. Tried looking on google, but no luck.

4 out of 5 eggsSAS Drive has SAS connector

Pros: Big SAS Hard Drive

Cons: See "Other Thoughts"

Other Thoughts: Caution: Like other's have pointed out, this drive does not have SATA connector, it has SAS connector. Many hardware SAS RAID controllers will come with SATA pigtail connectors, NOT SAS connectors. When this scenario occurs you will need a SATA to SAS adapter if you are not using a SAS backplane. And that means 1 Adapter per drive, so your project costs will increase as well as lead time to get the correct parts.

5 out of 5 eggsOdd Connection (Help)

Pros: Just had to post help for the previous review. This is a SAS drive. It stands for serial attached SCSI. The Odd connector is a SAS connector but you have to have a SAS drive controller (not a SATA).

Cons: You are gonna need to buy a SAS interface or send the drive back.

Other Thoughts: Just a quick note, SAS interfaces/controllers are meant to be compatible with SATA drives (which is why the connector is so close looking. However SATA interfaces/controllers are not compatible with SAS drives. SAS is for high performance, high reliable servers and high end workstations, it replaces SCSI. The drives and the interfaces (MB with built in SAS) are usually on the expensive side.

2 out of 5 eggsodd connection

Pros: no comment

Cons: SATA connection

Other Thoughts: I read up on these and thought it would be a great drive for a new desktop build - and the price was reasonable for open box. So I bought two to set up a RAID 1 config. Sorry to show my ignorance, but I assumed a SATA connection is a SATA connection, but no, these have the data and power connections bridged with a plastic bump in between. Must be for hot swapping? From all the homework I did prior to the purchase, nothing was mentioned about special adapter cables needed, and Seagate's PDF file shows plugging a regular 7 pin SATA connection into the back of this drive. I called New Egg and they didn't have a clue - trying to find out if I can just get an adapter. This is about my 20th computer build, and my first encounter with this problem

5 out of 5 eggs6 out/of 10 [unused]

Pros: Price a plus, for a SSD [hybrid].
This is a Uninstalled Drive [a backup for a failing drive].
More the program failing [not mentioning WHO but most everyone knows (& its one of their newest)], & the drives 8yrs old.

Cons: If its DOA on instillation there will be a MAJOR (-) factor applied.

Other Thoughts: Maxtor/ now Seagate have been fairly stable Drives. The early one's; were early and failed regularly. Planned obsolescence of course.
We will soon see if this being a SSD, it will be any better in the 'LONG HAUL'

5 out of 5 eggsSAS Price Point

Pros: Very attractive price point for SAS
Works well in SAS expander with Openindiana 151a5

Cons: *May* not mix with SATA in certain arrays -- my array is mixed but working well

5 out of 5 eggsbig FS

Pros: Big, reasonably fast & cheap for SAS. (and very fast delivery)

To make a fast, cheap and robust Linux file server, I have an IBM x3650 server with an IBM ServRAID 8i. I upgraded the RAID controller to an ServRAID 8k to get more robust battery backed cache and additional RAID options. I purchased a single drive to make sure the drive would not be rejected by the IBM controller. It was not.

I'll be ordering 5 more.

Cons: none so far, but it is a bit early to tell.

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive SAS

Pros: Works fine in ZFS raid (openindiana 151a4).
Very small price premium over SATA

Cons: *Might* be trouble mixing with SATA drives with certain SAS hardware

Other Thoughts: Hopefully this pricing will bring more people into the SAS marketplace & lower overall prices

5 out of 5 eggsToo early to tell?

Pros: Not DOA.:) Purchased 2 of these for a Dell PE T310 with a H200 RAID controller in RAID 1 to replace 2 failing SATA drives. These drives are detected as SAS drives by the controller and a snap to configure with the RAID boot utility. The same SATA cables plug right in to these near-line SAS drives.

Cons: Because they are detected as SAS, I could not swap the drive for one of the failing SATA drives and have the controller re-mirror the RAID 1. I had to image the array from a USB hard drive using the built-in Server 2008 image restore.

Other Thoughts: My first impression is that the performance of the server is better going from the 3gb/sec SATAs to the 6gb/sec near-line SAS. Time will tell as to the reliability. They will get a good work out on this Hyper-V host server hosting two heaviliy used VMs.
