1 out of 5 eggscannot recommend this drive - 2 failures

Pros: fast and quiet while it worked

Cons: don't last more than a year

Other Thoughts: I've had two of these drives fail, both right about the year mark. It's like the manufacturer designed them to fail just outside warranty. There is no other likely explanation. The first drive came equipped in my ASUS desktop, and it was great while it lasted. But just over a year in the drive slowed way, WAY down and eventually would not boot. So I figured it was a fluke, I understand that mechanicals go bad or have faults in them. So to preserve my existing data, I bought an identical one from newegg, and copied the old drive to the new one using specialized mirroring tools. Now, again about a year later, the second drive has begun the failure process. There is no way I'm going to make that mistake again. I'd rather build up a new system from scratch than roll the dice on this drive again. Shame on Seagate for producing such an unreliable product. I will not be buying another Seagate drive again...ever.

2 out of 5 eggsGot Slower Just Before it Died

Pros: Worked great for about a year.

Cons: I bought two of these drive for a video system. After a year, one drive was about 30% slower on reads than when it was new and had a slight vibration. No smart errors or a legit reason to RMA it.

Three months later it suddenly had a complete failure. No warnings, it was just no longer recognized on boot up but the platters were still spinning.

Other Thoughts: The RMA process was not all that bad. It took just under two weeks to get a new drive ( refurbished) . The replacement drive seems to work very well.

Good performing drive, but based on my experience and others reviews the failure rate seems to be a bit high.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Don't know...won't stay powered for more than 20 seconds.

Cons: DOA! Spins up LOUDLY, clicks twice, Spins down...then NOTHING. REALLY!?!?

Other Thoughts: First time buying a seagate drive. Going to try the RMA process, which is already giving me a headache. No UPS label printed because this is supposedly a "large item that requires special handling". Again...REALLY!?!?!?

1 out of 5 eggsMany things about this drive turned out to be false

Pros: 2TB - fast and relatively consistent.

Cons: Drive failure a year before warranty expiration

Other Thoughts: Not going to complain about the warranty - a drive failure a year before the warranty expires is a great thing, as long as the data is backed up somewhere, but this drive doesn't like to be RAIDed.

After weeks of research almost two years ago, this was the only drive reported to have a 512B physical block size - which was required by Solaris for the pool it was planned to go in.

It didn't. Solaris eventually saw through the 512B emulation mode to the 4096B sectors underneath and, when intended to be swapped in as a hot spare, refused to align (evidently, I didn't do /enough/ research).

So it became a singleton - it became the drive that the server packaged stuff on once a week (certainly nowhere near the 24/7 use it claims to support) to backup to a third party.

I tried mirroring it with its twin, but it just really didn't seem to want to align with that, either (which was absolutely strange, but whatever...I've seen my share of "completely nuts" in Solarisland, so it's not unexpected).

Finally, after around a year and a half of once-a-week use, the drive gave up suddenly about two nights ago.

I'm going to see how a PCB swap goes with this one and update the review depending - the board makes it a little obvious that it's the issue (contacts discolored like most drives do).

1 out of 5 eggsFlaky

Pros: The drives still function intermittently, so I may be able to get my data off of them.

Cons: The primary drive stopped booting about a month ago. Now that I've got some time to attempt a recovery, the backup (because they wouldn't work mirrored) is failing intermittently, making restoring the data very painful. Here's hoping I don't lose most of the data.

Other Thoughts: I've had two of these drives for just over two years. I originally tried to set them up as a mirrored pair, but that failed spectacularly. They do not support RAID.

2 out of 5 eggsbuying 3rd one

Pros: I wanted to give a one because I'm pretty upset. but it did worked for awhile. if it last over 3 years(warranty period) and die, i wont complain a word.

Cons: click of death in less than 2 years

Other Thoughts: i bought 1st sv35 2012/10. 2nd one last year.

2012 one went "click of death" today, "luckily", I can use board from same SV35 to bring it back to life. "unluckily" both of them are part of volume group, have to move all 2TB of extents from 2012 one before trash it. that's why i'm going to buy the 3rd one.

Pros: 1 out of 4 drives is still up after 1 (yes ONE) day.
NewEgg service!!!

Cons: 3 out of 4 drives died after ONE day

Other Thoughts: Had to return the whole thing for full refund. could trust replacement. Really happy that Newegg was so pleasant about it and very efficient in getting my order refunded. and that is why I shop here.
