5 out of 5 eggsWorking

Pros: Great price per gig, purchased 2 of these to install into my home server to increase it's storage for backups and redundancy. Hot swapped them right into the server and they're working.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Why buy expensive hard drives for backups when you can buy lots of cheap hard drives. If they end up failing I'll update this review accordingly.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Deal

Pros: Drive is very fast and almost completely silent, was happy to see date of manufacture as 02/13 (Currently 5/13 as I write this) The drive itself is very appealing with a very high quality metallic/glossy feel and has very rugged plastic contacts where sata and power cables connect. Was happy to see drive registering 130-150mb/s on the defraggler random disk benchmark test. I was always able to hear my western digital black 640gb drive chomping away on data but this drive is completely silent during activity.

Cons: Occasionally makes a very unusual noise for a hard disk drive. Nothing I have ever encountered before. Very hard to describe but it is a high pitch chirp type of noise.. exactly like a bird chirp noise, but almost like glass being scratched. I googled it and found just about every drive makes this noise. Its hard to describe but once you hear it you will know what I am talking about. It seemed to go away almost completely when I formatted/installed windows on it.

Says on the drive 2TB (2000GB) which is kind of funny because 1TB=1024GB.

I understand how minor scaling rates and reserved space effect the usable storage vs the actual storage. But physically using disk checking software (which gives you a reading of the total PHYSICAL storage the drive platters store was only 1907GB) Which overall gives you 1.8gb of usable storage. But it seems like companies these days are taking advantage of the minor mis-scaling rates. This drive is physically only 1907GB of storage.. All my other drives have lower actual storage also but at least they show the correct PHSYICAL storage as provided by the manufacture. Where is the other 100GB you shorted us Seagate?? This drive should be listed as 2048GB with 1.94TB usable.

Other Thoughts: Wow, the shipping was set to " $2.99 standard 3 day ground" So I unselected that and selected "free super eggsaver shipping" Here is the shipping

2 out of 5 eggsMissing Installation CD

Pros: Good price and very quiet.

Cons: Box and website picture show that installation CD is included, but it is not. You need to download it from the Seagate website. Then the real problem is you can't install the installation software to create a installation CD unless you already have a Seagate disk installed! So after searching on the Seagate site for 15 minutes and not finding it, I set up a chat and had to describe the problem twice to get the tech to understand the problems and give me a link to the hidden copy of the ISO to create the CD on the Seagate website.

Other Thoughts: Would have not been a problem if they had included the software as described.

4 out of 5 eggsHard to Initialize

Pros: Great Price only $79 after rebate. My drive had a sticker that says Made in China. Quiet, runs 2 degrees cooler than other drives in the same enclosure.

Cons: Difficult to initialize I thought it was DOA. I put it into my Rosewell RAID array as s substitute for a failing STb320000542AS. The controller refused to recognize the drive at all. I never had this problem with WD drives. I was able to recognize and initialize the drive by pulling a drive from my computer and swapping it. I then transferred the drive to the RAID box and it worked.

Other Thoughts: I was reluctant to try this drive based on some reviews. I moniter my drives and will run this w/o data for a week and then mirror data to it to see for failure before I commit to real data

5 out of 5 eggsSeagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB - Retail

Pros: I have had Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB for only three weeks so I can't speak about reliability, but the performance is excellent. It runs quiet, Smart reports it runs quite cool, and fairly casual performance testing shows it is equal to or better than a three year old WD Black 640 GB Sata2 drive.
I have been exercising the drive prior to committing any real data to it. I formatted with dd from /dev/zero, then formatted to ext4 with Gparted, and have been reading and writing files constantly and checking for parity errors. No complaints, no heat, no noise, no complaints.

Cons: None, really. I paid 89 bucks in April 2013, not bad in today's market.

Other Thoughts: I am very happy I got the retail version, it comes boxed so as to protect the drive during shipping. Newegg's packaging can be hit or miss. Two year warranty is better than a one year warranty ;-)

5 out of 5 eggsBest

Pros: It has so much space for how much it costs.

Cons: You can only use 1.81 terabytes, but that is expected.

Other Thoughts: Worth the 10 to 20 dollars more to get the 2 tb instead of 1 tb.

1 out of 5 eggsPure Garbage

Pros: Holds paper down on my desk. Drive worked well for 3 days...

Cons: PC locked up on 3rd day of using this drive, on reboot BIOS reported SMART capable but command failed

Other Thoughts: My own fault for throwing out the retail box. Because of this I cannot return for a refund to newegg.

Ordered a WD black to replace this drive. Hopeful that drive will last longer than 3 days.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's running

Pros: In the dark ages of the PC, Seagate was the gold standard of hard drives, but I had some problems with them a few years back, switched to another brand. But I needed a 2TB HD for this build and couldn't pass up this one at the shell shocker price. Minus 1 egg just for past experience. If it's still working in a year, I'll upgrade it 5 eggs.

Cons: None so far. Haven't run any speed test, but noticed that it rates the same as a SATA2 HD in the W7 performance index.

Other Thoughts: This SOHO build:
i5-3550P CPU, Zalman CNPS9500AT Cooler, ASRock H77M MB, Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3 1600 CMZ4GX3M1A1600C9B MB, Seagate STBD2000101 HDD, XFX Radeon FX-775A-ZNP4 graphics, Samsung BD-reader/DVDRW, OCZ 600W PS, in a minitower case.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks beautifully

Pros: I had MASSIVE SMART errors on my previous drive. I ran HDD Regenerator and recovered all bad sectors. But SMART was still reporting the errors so I knew it was time for a new drive.

I ordered this drive. It took 5 days to get. Once it showed up I cracked it open, plugged it in downloaded the Seagate DiscWizard utilities (this was my only con. Why not include a CD?). I then created a bootable USB drive, cloned my old 1TB drive in about 1hr 30 mins and installed and booted to my cloned drive with no issues.

Cons: Really seagate? you can't spend money on a CD? What if I couldn't get online for whatever reason and download DiscWizard?
