1 out of 5 eggsNever again, Seagate

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Bought 2 drives. Both drives worked for 2 years (the warranty period).

Cons: First drive failed about 2 weeks after the warranty period ended.
Second drive failed 6 months later.

Other Thoughts: I'll stick with other brands that offer 5 year warranties, and whose drives actually work well beyond those 5 years.

1 out of 5 eggsAnd...it's dying after a year

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Easy to install
Economical in the short-term
Worked great until it started the dreaded clicking noise

Cons: Failing after 13 months

Other Thoughts: I purchased the drive because of its cheap and spacious storage. But, I also back-up frequently in case of failures. If you insist on purchasing this, please have a back up plan; there is an excellent chance the drive will die before it's time.

2 out of 5 eggsFailed too quickly

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Worked well enough while functioning.
Good price (at the time) for a 2TB Hard Drive.

Cons: Failed in less than two years, with only moderate usage in a home computer.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Reliable. I have used this particular drive in a hot swap backup system for a year and a half now. It gets lots of read and writing to the sectors and it has never caused any trouble. The 6.0Gbps is also nice as the backups can be large.

Cons: None

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Ran good, not that fast but did the job while it was working.

Cons: died after two short years, I would recommend spending a little more to get a better quality item.

3 out of 5 eggswas good

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Good and fast while it was in working condition.

Cons: The drive is dying. It is making loud clicks every so often. It is actually clicking while I write this review. Seatools says that i have just over 6000 hours on the drive. Every other time i boot up my pc, the HDD isn't recognized. I downloaded Seagate's Seatools for windows, and it failed when trying to test it. Then i put the DOS version on a disk and it would read more than 80 errors each time i did a long test. It would repair them, but more would show the next time i ran a test.

Other Thoughts: Too bad the warranty expired a couple of months ago. Maybe I am unlucky. I think mechanical hard drives are too unreliable to be used anymore. Ill be moving on to SSDs, even though they are way more expensive.

2 out of 5 eggsDead after three years

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: for the time it worked, it was a decent hdd

Cons: hard drives shouldnt die after just 3 years... hell, ive still got some old 80gb western digital drives kicking around from more than 10 years ago that work fine...

Other Thoughts: why is it, that despite advancing technology, we have hard drives dying faster than their older counterparts, i guess gone are the days of reliable hard drives... seagate has dropped off in quality as far as i can tell, i've had trouble with many of their drives having short lifespans... i guess it just goes to show they are not interested in making a quality product anymore.

i'll be glad when the large SSDs come out next year... hope these people fall to the curb and die a slow and painful death.

5 out of 5 eggsTwo years still going strong

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: -reasonably quiet (cant hear them over case fans)
-Good storage amount (2TB model)
-after two years of heavy usage the two I purchased are still -functioning just fine. I have about 1.34TB worth of games on one load times are reasonable*
* some games like BF3/4 have long load times on a drive this size. I re-installed them on an SSD to save time

Cons: not an especially fast drive, however that is pretty true for any large HDD (Id say 1TB and up)

Other Thoughts: these are really more for storage. but I have been cramming games onto one of them for a few years now and am perfectly happy.
my D drive (Mainly games and windows backups 156GB free of 1.8TB) has about 372d 3h power on time.
my E drive has all of my media and some overflow backup from D
377d 9h power on time. not a massive ammount of time but enough that I feel comfortable telling people its okay to trust these.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible quality and terrible service

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Fast, quiet drive.

Cons: Extremely poor quality control, they charge a fee for warranty service.

Other Thoughts: Seagate now charges a 12 dollar fee for advanced replacement. I find this the height of scumbag behavior in a company. They are well aware of their reputation and terrible, almost legendary low quality control and high failure rates (check the internet for this information if you arent aware of it, i wont link here as that would be bad taste) but they are proven to have failure rates orders of magnitude higher than other manufacturers.

There is a reason they are frequently the cheapest available drives in the "common" type (1-3 TB, 7200RPM, mid-high tier mechanical performance).

All other drive manufacturers offer free advanced replacement. I assume seagate does not because they wish to recoup what has to staggering replacement costs over the past few years due to the cost cutting and poor engineering quality they have taken as their mantra.
