This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: None!

Cons: Bought this drive in early October. It sat on a shelf until Monday. Installed it and it DOA. Because it was beyond 30 days Newegg won't warranty it. I have to go through Seagate to try to get a replacement. What a Pain!

Other Thoughts: Don't waste your money!

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: Lots of storage while it lasted.

Cons: don't make this mistake of using this drive as a back up drive, don't even make the mistake of purchasing it.

Other Thoughts: no. Don't do it. Get a ssd.

1 out of 5 eggsTango Down (2 of 3 died within 18 months)

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: Drives hold data until they fail (is this called damning by faint praise?).
Speed consistent with what you would expect out of a 7200 RPM drive.
Relatively painless RMA process.

Cons: Reliability is very poor.

Other Thoughts: I purchased 3 of these to put into a home server build. The 3 drives were running in a Raid 5 array since June of 2013. My first drive died at the end of July 2014. The second drive died last night (Dec 2014). Let's be honest, you buy these for reliability. A spinning disk should get you several years before tanking. I understand infant mortality is a thing. You can have drives bite the dust early, but that number should be low (<5%). Two drives down within 18 months is extremely disappointing.

Do yourself a favor and buy a better drive if you're running in any device that keeps an active array. The drives were listed as being great for NAS use. This is not the case. Buy drives based on warranty length and reviews. The 2 year warranty on these should have been a red flag, but I ignored it. As a result, I keep a cold spare in my desk ready to replace failed drives as soon as possible. Once I'm out of the 2 year period and can no longer RMA failed drives, I'll start to replace with more prosumer level equipment.

3 out of 5 eggsPlan to replace it after a year

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: Fast

Cons: Purchased on 10/13/2013 for a new system build, started getting check disk errors at the start of December 2014. Drive hasn't failed yet, but I'm planning on replacing it now. Glad I'm using it as a file storage for Steam and Media files, my OS is on a WD SSD.

Other Thoughts: I hate to sound like a broken record, but if you want a drive to last, spend extra money to buy high-quality materials. These drives seem to be built to last about a year in a home-use system built for gaming. Keep that in mind while buying.

1 out of 5 eggsDied after a year

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: Was fast

Cons: Died within a year

Other Thoughts: I had the drive for a little over a year, and it died. Now I have to try to deal with warranty replacement, but I will probably have to buy another drive to try to recover the data off the dead drive before I can do that.
