3 out of 5 eggsMixed feelings

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: Inexpensive for a 2TB drive (Got them at $90 each)

Cons: One drive of three failed after a week

Other Thoughts: Brought 3 drives when they were $90 each to make a Raid 5 drive. After one week, one of the drives failed.
Still able to boot, but many services could not load (including network connection)

2 out of 5 eggsTwo failed drives

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: They were reasonably cheap

Cons: Bought two drives at the same time in december 2012. The first drive failed after about 2 years. The second drive failed after 2.5 years. Neither was heavily used, serving mostly as media storage and playback.

Other Thoughts: I kept the two mirrored when I got them and then after the first one died made a point of having automated backups of what was on it to other locations. Guess it paid off.

1 out of 5 eggsSeagate Product Model Mis-Match, Error when trying to RMA

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: It worked almost as long as the warranty.

Cons: Purchased May 8, 2013 and the hard drive started acting up February 20, 2015. Hard drive officially died April 17, 2015.

Seagate website will not allow me to RMA because it gives me a product model mis-match error. It is under warranty but no matter how I type in the model and serial number it gives me an error.

Going with Western Digital from now. Switched over a year ago to Western Digital after so many Seagate drives going dead only a few months out of warranty. This Seagate drive actually dies under warranty and I still can't get it replaced.

1 out of 5 eggsCrashed TWICE

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: Fast, quiet

Cons: Crashed after 1 year of use. Seagate was pretty good about sending me a replacement, but unforunately that also crashed after less than 1 year of use. Very disappointing and all data lost both times!

Other Thoughts: Seriously recommend that you DO NOT buy this drive. I have never had this many problems with hard drives before.

5 out of 5 eggsThis drive just keeps going and going

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: This drive has been used in a secondary storage type setup for 2 different systems now, and has yet to fail. I even used speedfan to test out its life and still has so much life left, granted I did not use this as my boot but still for a hard drive of this magnitude at the time its speaks volumes to me.

Cons: None at this time. No doa, no issues moving from one system to the other as my secondary storage.

Other Thoughts: As far as using this to store my larger steam library and also to be a secondary storage to my main SSD Raid0 Boot with some space to launch important programs and most used steam games I cant be happier with its life, performance, and overall just ease of use.

5 out of 5 eggsDependable

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: I use several of these. Some to capture FRAPS off BF4.

I rely on these drives now. See other thoughts.

Cons: They are not the 128 mb buffer coming out this year, but does it really matter?

Other Thoughts: I keep losing Western Digital Drives too often. The three of last 5 were DOA or burned up shortly.

No more of them. I still have three of the old Raptor 150's one of which develped a click of death of sorts. But those drives are so early and long ago as to be a geological epoch in gaming.

I am Seagate Barracudas exclusively. I will continue to buy them provided they never fail. They have to earn it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with Windows 2003/WHS v1

This review is from: Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Retail kit

Pros: While an AF drive, the SmartAlign firmware did work just fine installed out of the box in a 512K sector based Windows Home Server V1 HP EX490 (which is really just Windows 2003 Server R2 under the covers). I bought four of these, three were made in China, one in Thailand. None of them had any bad sectors and all of them were plug and play.

Cons: The SmartAlign firmware was not compatible with Paragon Alignment Tool 4. So you cannot even try to manually improve the sector alignment to 4K. This means living with some performance degradation due to firmware inefficiencies.

Other Thoughts: The retail box has printed on the side that it includes a Seatools CD-ROM. But none of them included this. Memo to Seagate: update your printing text for the box.
