3 out of 5 eggsDon't give up until you try hard

Pros: Price; only use one USB port

Cons: only use one USB port(an additonal USB port may be able to supply adequate and stable current); could not find the RPM of the drive!

Other Thoughts: I don't have the drive, but based on your reviews, I recommended it to a client. For those who have trouble with it such as, turning on and off, clicking sounds, start to recognize by WINDOWS and then quit...please lend me your ears:

Most USB ports are capable to be drawn up to 500mA; most drives need at least 250mA; some older motherboards let all the USB ports(front and back) share 2000mA in total; some thinner USB cables only let 100mA go through. Any drive requires more power as it gets older and as it get warmer as well(electrons travel better in cold than hot). For those who is technical in nature, I think you know what I am getting at. So if you have the above symptoms, try the following before you give it up:

1. Use a high-quality, thick, shielded USB cable.

2. Do not use a long USB cable. Stay within 6-15'!

3. Remove all USB devices except the drive.

4. Never connect the drive to an USB hub without its own power source.

If the drive still fails, then call sup

2 out of 5 eggsToshiba RMA Service - Horrible

Pros: When working, this unit is nice.

Cons: If you have to use the Toshiba RMA service Beware! It really stinks.

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these drives. One malfunctioned after 60 days. I RMA'd to Toshiba. The replacement was DOA and it was scratched and had food stuck over the top of it. Nasty! Now I am arguing with Toshiba, trying to get a replacement. The drive was 60 days old. Really Stinks.

Pros: Small and quiet.

Other Thoughts: Have friends with the Western Digital one and no problems.

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Decent performance, lightweight, no noise.

Cons: ... no noise until you here the click of death 4 months after light use.

Other Thoughts: as others have said, the cable leaves much to be desired, but gets the job done. The drive died before the cable connection had a chance to.

2 out of 5 eggsShoddy Connection means the drive is doomed.

Pros: Transfer rate is fine, I even formatted to ntfs to use with protools and other audio software.
I've never had a problem with the drive itself working.
It's quiet, cool, and attractively priced.

Cons: The cable included has a flexible length of less than two inches, no joke. That's fine since I have plenty of cables but the connection on the drive itself is fried after careful usage (i.e. laptop used docked like a desktop) and it's only a matter of time before the connection is completely lost.

Other Thoughts: If the connection had been fine, I'd have no complaints - it's a great piece of harware to have around, though my new solid state disk has far surpassed it in read/write and musical software usage.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 6 months of light usage

Pros: Cheaper than others

Cons: Unreliable, used it as backup on trips, rarely connected, never dropped or shaken. Clicking sounds and disconnects, drive full of errors now, going to the garbage can

5 out of 5 eggsPhenomenal Drive

Pros: foreword to moderators: feel free to condense this review with my old one, or supercede it.

I've had my drive, the 320gb model, for over a year. My mom liked my drive so much she got her own, the 400gb model.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this drive...

Cons: ...Except the included USB cable. It's short, and frail; it may appear as though the drive is not working properly if you abuse the USB cable (turns on and connects, then intermittently turns off and reconnects later).

IF you experience any problems with this drive, it's with the included mini USB cable. But, you can get them from Newegg for FAR less than your local electronics retailer (i.e. Best Buy).

Other Thoughts: This is an absolutely beautiful drive. It performs well in every possible category you could possibly rate this drive on:

-Its transfer speed isn't as good as firewire, but on USB2.0 it works great. On some systems, I've seen large files (3.0GB or greater) copy absurdly quickly

-It is small (3.5" wide; appx the same dimensions as a laptop hard drive)
-It runs ABSURDLY quiet... and it runs cool!
-It has a gorgeous finish that never fails to catch everyone's attention, even though mine is a little scratched up and smudged.

Again: the ONLY problem with this drive is the included USB cable.

If you're thinking about getting any other brand of hard drive, stop looking. Seriously. This is the best you're going to get.

Did I mention it's durable (I've dropped mine more than once) and reliable, too? It's a better value to get two of these in the 500GB size, than a single 1TB HDD from another manufacturer, because it's quieter and runs cooler and takes up far less space.
