1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy it

Pros: nice looking, and has SATA

Cons: failed after a few months...heed what almost everyone is reporting about this drive, and do not buy it. You have better odds at winning the lottery than having this drive work for you after a while.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed, bad sectors

Pros: the esata was fast

Cons: As soon as this drive got full, it started to cause my computer to freeze, then restart, then while booting, computer would say "one or more of your discs needs to be checked for errors" then it may or may not pick a large folder of data and Delete all of the files, calling them "orphan files." AS SOON as it got close to full, completely crapped out, then would not even reformat, ran a sector test, millions of bad sectors throughout the whole drive.

Other Thoughts: I feel like a hard drive, well cared for, sitting in one place 99% of time, should last longer than 1.75 years. if it doesn't, it's a bad drive.

1 out of 5 eggsScreaming piece of whale dung

Pros: None

Cons: EXTREMELY slow, installs malware on my system, and now has about 20gb of my data that I can't move back off of it.

Going in the trash as soon as I can figure out how to recover the files.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from this drive

Pros: None

Cons: I was never able to get this drive to work right. Any file that I tried to store would be corupted when I tried to pull it off. I tried a firmware update, usb connection and an esata connection. No luck. I finally took it out of the case and used it as an internal drive. That worked. Apparently it is a problem with the board.
I have seen many negative reviews and stories of problems with this drive on various sights on the net.
Save yourself the trouble and buy something else.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great For Me

Pros: Quiet, fast, reliable, cheap.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I'm *really* surprised to read the negative reviews here, as I've never had a single negative experience with this drive ever since buying it out of desperation in the middle of a vacation to store photos. That was about a year ago.

I think I downloaded a small utility from the Toshiba site to remove their proprietary formatting, and reformatted it as NTFS. That took no time.

Now it's back home with me, and USB and eSATA have both worked flawlessly. (Note your mobo needs to be set to AHCI mode for the eSATA to work hot-swappably like a USB drive.) But if you have your gear properly set up, this thing is a total champ. eSATA speeds are fantastic and this thing has been a total dream so far. I'm planning to buy another for work-related backups.

3 out of 5 eggsMeh

Pros: Hasn't died... yet. Runs well once you get it to connect

Cons: While the drive works fine once it's going, everytime I plug it in I wonder if this is it's last. USB takes about a minute to recognize, and I'm lucky if eSATA recognizes at all (usually it doesn't). I bought this specifically for the esata and have found it to not be worth the trouble this drive presents.

Other Thoughts: I'm currently backing up the hard drives contents to my desktop because I'm afraid of the drive dieing on me.

I'll definitely be staying away from Toshiba drives.

5 out of 5 eggsUse the SATA idiot

Pros: SATA

TB of space! good enough for now...
matches my Toshiba laptop

Cons: easy gathers fingerprints and dust
not too much of a problem because i just keep it in its stand where it belongs, not really a portable HD

Other Thoughts: i think i got this for just under $100
take advantage of the SATA otherwise GTFO

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy!!!

Pros: none

Cons: Bought this drive about 6 months ago, after about 1 month of use it would keep telling me i need to format, everytime I would scan the drive for errors none would come up. Now 6 months in, it starts doing it on a daily basis even after formating. Finally crashed. The $20 i saved was not worth loosing all my files

Other Thoughts: Do your self a favor if you value your information / files never buy from Toshiba.

2 out of 5 eggsPassable

Pros: Has a 7200rpm drive with 15mb cache.
eSATA port allows for excellent transfer speeds

Cons: Annoying click at spinup. Useless Software partition on drive. USB mode is horrible as the unit constantly shuts down and you have to hit the power button.
Don't even buy this if you don't have esata ports.

Other Thoughts: As connected to the esata port on a Gigabyte EP45-UDP3 motherboard with Windows7 on it (after formatting the drive to get rid of the software partition) this drive has operated flawlessly.
Unit powers up and down quickly in response to win7 power plan setting (just as internal drives do).
Unit does click annoyingly on spin up and spin down but its not the loudest external drive I've had.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Drive on Ubuntu

Pros: 1.High capacity AND USB/eSATA for a low price
2. Looks great on the desktop
3. Works flawlessly in Ubuntu 10.10, just plug and play
4. Cool hidden light on the front, though I think it just indicates if the power is on.

Cons: Doesn't get power from USB! I was a little dissappointed that you always had to use the DC adapter to get power. I figured it was just for eSATA. Some people in other reviews complained that they didn't get power from eSATA, however if they did a little research they would find out eSATA doesn't even carry power, so it is not the drive's fault. eSATAp does carry power but this is not a eSATAp drive. The type of USB connection it uses (A to B) CAN carry power, but the device just seems to neglect to use it.

Other Thoughts: I haven't seen any of the problems other people have been talking about like the sleep mode and the 250mb virtual drive. Maybe these are related to the software for Windows that is comes with?

Also, a word about FAT. FAT 32-bit is a universal file system that will work with most operating systems. This is why it makes sense to ship it pre-formatted with FAT. They don't ship it with NTFS because that is Windows only. I think this is a good call by Toshiba. I have already backed up most of my important stuff to this drive using luckyBackup and it has worked flawlessly. It is a good overall drive.
