1 out of 5 eggsExtremely poor

Pros: Beautiful design, eSATA and USB, and the ability to power it on and off without unplugging (power button).

Cons: I have purchased a total of 3 of this drive. All are the Gen2. I have lost around 75% of the data I have put on these drives through corruption. The first one I took back, assuming it was a bad drive (and Toshiba normally makes pretty good products). I travel constantly, so I keep one at home and one with me. When the second drive (the one I kept with me) corrupted, I went to the one at home . . . which was also corrupted. It is so bad that after deleting the partition and formatting the drive, it took only a couple of weeks before certain files were so corrupted they couldn't even be deleted. I have used these drives with over 10 different computers, many times formatting them between computers just to make sure it wasn't the computer.
They also work very poorly with eSata, and I originally did a lot of testing in the thought that maybe transfer through *that* was what caused the corruption (it wasn't).

Other Thoughts: Other Toshiba products (and drives) are great. I would warn everyone I ever see to avoid this drive like the plague. It is tough to get a refund on mine, as I've had them for over 6 months . . . and the drive software says that they work fine.

I have purchased a LOT of products through NewEgg, but I needed these drives just before a trip and purchased them locally. I can't say enough good things about NewEgg, and this review is no reflection on them in any way.

1 out of 5 eggsComplete Junk

Pros: It was inexpensive and slim.

Cons: It just doesn't work. I was getting corrupt files within a month, and more every time I powered it up.

3 months later, and I cannot even power it up. I bought it on clearance, and now I know why I got a 2 TB drive for less than $150. New model my rump.

Other Thoughts: I generally love Toshiba, but either the enclosure or drive is junk.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid like the plague.

Pros: I found it cheap someplace I know why. Sleek Design.

Cons: This thing goes into standby constantly and you cannot wake it up easily. I'll come home from work and try to access the drive and have to sit there for a few minutes while it comes back to life. I've heard of patches to fix it, but for the life of me I cannot find it. Toshiba doesn't even list this product on it's website.

5 out of 5 eggsGet a "GEN 2" version

Pros: Make sure you get a "GEN 2" version, and that also goes for their 1TB external drives too. They fixed the time out with software supplied. You can change it to anything you'll want.
The hard doesn't have the "CD" software eveyone complains about installed anymore. You can add it with the CD it comes with if you want.

I was able to check the firmware and it matches my "SAMSUNG Story 2TB External drive disk." So it must have a SAMSUNG hard drive.

SAMSUNg has had problems with their drive so they offer some of the longer warrantees. So the three year warrantee for the Toshiba is a plus. BTW, I've read elsewhere that some manufacturers want the drive back in the original boxes for warrantee service, so save your box for three years to be safe.

Last, sorry NEWEGG, but I bought the drive elsewhere on clearance for about $108 at the best "buying" place in the store. New drives are on the way so look for discounts in the stores that you won't see adverstized in their flyers.

Cons: It is heavy and not a light weight portable drive. So if you think it is, it's not.

Since it is a SAMSUNG hard drive, it is slow at 5400 RPM and 8 MB cache. SAMSUNG drive have had problems, I had to return a 1 TB drive for a replacement from Newegg. So far that drive hasn't had anymore problems and the "Story" drive has been working well for months. It has the same problem that Toshiba fixed with software, in turning off, to save power. However, that I didn't need to turn it off and on again to bring it back on line. It looks like software is the fix and Toshiba fixed it. I'll have to see if there's a similar fix to the "Story" drive.

Other Thoughts: They appear to have solved of the problems that people were complaining about with the "GEN 2" version.
Check the model on the box or drive and it says PH3200U-1EXB (GEN 2) for the latest version. Also it should also list WIN 7 on the box now. The older versions didn't.

1 out of 5 eggsDisappointing failure

Pros: Compact size for large storage.

Cons: Bought two drives, and both failed to do their jobs. They ran, but the eSATA hookup didn't work for long. So I moved to using USB. That seemed to work well enough, but a check of the files found multiple corrupt copies. Sad, since the drives seemed to be a good value, as well as compact in size. I suppose I got what I paid for. So they're going back.

Other Thoughts: Thankfully, the people at Newegg are honest businesspeople who stand behind what they sell. They've given me no problem with these drives, and they're taking them back and giving me a refund (which I'll then use to buy another brand--maybe Western Digital, which has served me well in the past).

3 out of 5 eggsGreen Isn't always good

Pros: Large size
Esata works well
Slim design and form factor
2TB Yeah!
It is very quiet.

Cons: Sleepy... The green drive function on this always turns the drive off. Which means that you are constantly pressing the power button to cycle power whenever you want to use it. Unless you are writing to it all the time. Also it goes to sleep and if you have to reboot your computer there is a handshake that exist between the drive and your computer that it comes up with a freeze mid reboot. You have to unplug the drive from your eSata slot and reboot again. All in all a slightly annoying drive. It also runs a bit HOT and toasty.

4 out of 5 eggs2TB External Drive

Pros: Nice looking unit, quiet, and always ready to go. Toshiba quality, though I have not taken it apart to see what is inside (I pray to all invented divinities ever invented that it does NOT have a Western Digital - waiting to fail - drive inside). On/Off switch a nice feature, as this is my secondary backup drive, and does not always need to be running.

Cons: The silly virtual CD that takes up drive space. Other than an axe, I cannot figure out how to eliminate. What happened to FDISK? Drive manufacturers need to just build drives, and let the software people build backup utilities. Otherwise, this drive would be a five (5)

Other Thoughts: As always, Newegg ROCKS!

2 out of 5 eggsProblems with Mac...

Pros: Low Cost, eSATA

Cons: Problems when using it with a Mac (10.6.3). When the drive worked, it worked fine. Partitioned it into 2, one partition for time machine backups, and the other for general storage.

The problem was that after some time of inactivity, the drive would power itself down and presumably go to sleep. At that point, there was no way that the drive would power up automatically. The only thing I could do was power it off using the power button, and then back on again. I have an older Seagate drive that doesn't have this problem. Will return this unit and get a Seagate or WD and hope for better results.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable Storage

Pros: It is a very attractive design. It is very slim taking very little space on the desktop. It is both USB and eSATA. It has a power button which is great for a drive that is meant for long term storage.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: This drive has amazing durability. As I was copying 1TB of data to the drive I knocked it off the desk. I know stupid thing to do. The drive just kept on copying. It never blinked or hiccuped a bit with no data loss. What more can I say.

5 out of 5 eggsI don't understand?

Pros: Looks good. Easy setup. Just plugged it into Windows 7 and worked completely fine. Didn't need to do anything but transfer files.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I don't understand why everyone is giving this external harddrive a bad review. Maybe I got lucky but my harddrive works fine. I purchased it to backup my information via usb and have no problems with it. I had about 1.2tb of information to backup and it did it in 5 hours. I didn't have an eSata cable and I knew that it didn't come with one because it says it on the box. I would absolutely recommend this to a friend. Actually, I already have. It's simple, easy to use and does what it is supposed to do, FOR ME!
