1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy this drive!!

Pros: Not really any worth mentioning.

Cons: This drive is incapable of long jobs like backing up your whole computer because the "eco" features of the internal drive end up putting it to sleep in the middle of the job. When I first had this problem with Windows backup I tried Easeus Todo, then Acronis...same deal. Then I tried the backup with another USB drive, no problem. Then after some research I reformatted the drive, still the same problems. Then thinking it was the enclosure I took the drive out and put it in another enclosure....same problems. If you research the drive (samsung hd 103si) you'll find issues.

Other Thoughts: The huge variety of feedback on this drive makes me thing that it suffers from both poor quality control and bad engineering. Newegg has discontinued selling this drive but they're still selling it "refurbished"

1 out of 5 eggsgarbage

Pros: worked great for the first 8 months

Cons: doesn't work anymore. i plugged it into the usb drives of two different computers and the Toshiba just doesn't register. the light on the drive flashes but it doesn't show up on the desktop. all my data is lost! it's not like i just pulled it out of the computer without unsyncing it first. will never buy another product by Toshiba.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes what it's supposed to do

Pros: Works flawlessly, I initially used it for PC storage (WinXP and 7) and backup, now it's serving as the storage device on my satellite receiver (Linux).

Cons: None so far with the drive, these have really increased in price!

Other Thoughts: I replaced this for PC duty with a 2.5" drive and case that is USB powered. Using this drive portably is a pain because it uses it's own power supply. That could be a good thing, as it won't load down the device it's attached to, anyway it's a thing.

1 out of 5 eggsNot reliable

Pros: Good for small, unimportant file transfer.

Cons: This external HD has been completely unreliable since day one. It corrupts data and doesn't power off properly. Originally purchased to backup my computers only to find out later on that the backups weren't useable. I do not recommend this item for large data transfers.

Other Thoughts: I was thinking of returning it but at this point it would just be a hassle.

4 out of 5 eggsWell worth the money

Pros: Quiet, sleek, eSata option, purchased before the hard drive crisis, but it's still worth it.

Cons: Not out-of-the-box friendly. It goes to sleep if you're not actively using it, which renders it worthless for remote access if you don't hire someone to sit right next to it and press the power button whenever you want to access it.

Other Thoughts: Went to the toshiba website and downloaded the tool to remove the sleep option and connected it as an eSata. Doesn't go to sleep anymore and boots up with the computer from a complete power off state. I simply love it now.

Here's a link for the Toshiba website for those who encounter the same problem:

1 out of 5 eggsIt Died!

Pros: Looks nice.
Compatable with most DVR cable boxes.
eSATA connection.

Cons: Died 4 days after I put it into use. Cost another $13 to ship it back to NewEgg. I bought a 12 month extended warrantee but the cost of return shipping on a $59 refurb is not worth it.

Other Thoughts: Never buy refurb again!

2 out of 5 eggsUpdated contact for Toshiba Warranty

Pros: If it worked, it would likely have been a good drive. I have had no problems with their portable drives.

Cons: Defective drive. :( I am glad we got the extended warranty on this drive. Unfortunately, they can't do anything till the 90 days are up. (At least THEY have better hours than Toshiba does for getting support.)

Other Thoughts: Toshiba changed the support web page and phone number for their external drives. 6-7 phone calls later, I was able to find the right location for getting warranty replacement on the drive.

Toshiba Acclaim (who took over the external drive division in 6/2011) is at 888-592-0944.

Warranty web page is at -

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works great! Fast! I bought 2 year warranty on it just in case because it was refurbished but for the price of only 40.00 it was definitely worth it!

Cons: none so far.
