1 out of 5 eggsThe Worst Hard Drives Ever Made

Pros: First let me state that Toshibas make some of the best laptops that you can by, however, they make the worst HDDs.

Cons: I own a computer repair shop in my town and I can tell you that about 70% of all the hard drives we replace are Toshiba hard drive. They are poorly designed and most fall prey to read errors. Do your self a favor and by a Western Digital hard drive. If you are looking on NewEgg right now, you will find that the WDs are the same price than the Toshibas.

Other Thoughts: Considering the quality of Toshiba laptops, its very surprising that they would put out such poor quality hard drives. Then again, you really can only do a few things good in life . . . Toshiba, stick with what you do best and stop trying to make hard drives.

4 out of 5 eggsGood update drive!

Pros: - Low power consumption,
- Amongst the fastest 320GB laptop drives @5400rpm in the world, in IOPS; in other words perfect for hosting your OS on it!

- The SATA3 (300MB/s) drive is backwards compatible with SATA2 interfaces (150MB/s); and works flawless on my laptop

- Does not run hot.

- Single platter drive!

- Long life!
My previous Toshiba harddrive (MK1234GSX) lasted 3 years of almost continuous use (it ran BT & chat client software); opposed to Western Digital; had 3 drives which ran just one year of heavy use; all WD's died right after their warranty was over!
I don't trust WD anymore!

Cons: At times this drive beeps. It's very unusual for a harddrive to beep. Signs of end of life?
It's when the drive gets woken out of sleep that it does that.

If it dies I'll send an RMA, and return it, but so far apart from three beeps in more than 180hours of use, it has not done much bad.

I have done some very intensive testing too (defrag, AV scan, etc..).

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive as an update for my Sony Vaio VGN-C190G laptop. It came with a Toshiba MK1234GSX drive of 120GB, and I wanted something similar; perhaps afraid that the Sony Vaio's bios would not accept a drive too different from the original.
I had already tested a smaller than 120GB drive and it was rejected by the Sony software (OS, drivers, and crapware).

This drive update went perfect!

My laptop works a tad faster, and runs notably cooler (esp so on defrags). The fan hardly comes on because of disk activity!

A diskbench had my MK1234GSX rated at 245MB/s interface connection, and this drive was rated almost 450MB/s interface connection; despite this SATA3 drive being connected to a SATA2 connection port!

Toshiba's drives are soon becoming top class drives. Though slower in continuous write and read speeds than Western Digital drives, they last longer, and have higher IOPS, which is very important for OS drives!

4 out of 5 eggsGood all around.

Pros: Good transfer rate, especially for being a laptop drive.
Quiet, produces slightly less heat than a couple of other drives I have seen.
Stable.
Regular SATA instead of the B s "Slimline" SATA drives I've seen.

Cons: Had a lot of trouble when I had two partitions of two different extensions (NTFS vs. ext3).
Ext 3 eventually crashed and had some bad errors, but NTFS made it all the way through. Strange.
My laptop motherboard burned out because of a faulty PSU (Hp does that some times T.T), and drive had trouble accommodating to another system, even with proper drivers. Eventually formatted it.

Other Thoughts: Decent for gaming, especially being a laptop drive. I don't know why, though....

1 out of 5 eggsbad luck

Pros: at least the drive didn't fail after a couple of weeks

Cons: drive failed out of the box

Other Thoughts: recieved the drive and proceeded to install Windows and use it. System was having issues installing OS, so I plugged it into another machine and ran a disk check. Detected bad sectors and SMART errors. Better to have it fail right out of the box than a few weeks later, I guess. Hopefully the exchanged unit will arrive soon...and work! Too bad I had to pay to return ship the defective drive:(.
