3 out of 5 eggsFails to write-won't wake up

Pros: It does work as stated by the other lucky reviewers-when it is awake and my old Win XP sp3 desktop sees it. And I find the Backups simple (this is where my technical knowledge is lacking) meaning that the files are backed up in a usable format - no need of the backup software to get and copy a file from the 'backup.'

Cons: My OS can't wake it up when it looks for this HDD (why the 2 D's?) and the HDD went into standby. Windows repeatedly tries to write to it without luck and I end up with several Warning boxes on screen that say I have a write failure. Bummer-this makes it extremely unreliable for the way I believe most of us like a HDD to work - be there when the PC needs to work with it WITHOUT a Human to 'shake' it awake.

Other Thoughts: If one wants this for a once a week or month backup schedule where the user would attach this HDD to the system and run the backup then put it in storage (off site), it might be considered a great product, but it isn't sold that way. So, maybe that is how it will end up for me. And who knows maybe a driver update will be available that will correct this 'heavy' sleeper. Wake UP!!!!

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Customer Service

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Lasted 2 wks after install at customer site - Toshiba wanted $180 holding fee to replace the drive under warranty. Told them we would send them the drive and they could then send another one - "That's not how we do it" was the reponse from Toshiba. I just threw it in the trash. Last product I will ever order from Toshiba

4 out of 5 eggsSome thoughts about this product after 4 months of using it !

Pros: I bought this product for more than 4 months, and this is still working ok. The average speed is about 70 MB/s, and it is fast, isn't it ?

Cons: This product has some problems with connecting, and the adapter is not good. I have some important experiences with it. Toshiba support is NOT good, too. Also, I think this HDD is NOT for automatic backup, so don't do it ^^"

Other Thoughts: These are my experiences about it :

1 - Think carefully before you buy this product. I can see that there is NO support from Toshiba, they just sell it. At Toshiba's website, there is NO support for HDD. Also, there are many reviews from many website that Toshiba don't want to support their customers, they just want to sell it.

2 - Put this HDD in the same height with your laptop, or a little bit lower than your USB port of your desktop computer. If not, it will work slowly, or for a long time your computer will say "Windows does not recognize it"

3 - Please do not use external electric socket for this product because it will affect its health and speed. I tested this HDD by using Ashampoo HDD control 2, so I can see that.

4 out of 5 eggsJust got one.

Pros: Very fast back up with included software. 460 plus gigabytes in just over two and a half hours. Only had the drive for 4 hours as of posting this review.

Cons: Software will not use this drive unless it is directly connected via USB. Made a backup with it connect via USB then transfered the cable to my routers NAS USB port. Windows finds it fine on the NAS connection and I can assign a driver letter to it. The backup software however will not use it over the NAS connection. NTI (the maker of the backup software) has a version that will although the one one included with the drive has same name and version number.

Other Thoughts: Fingers crossed given some of the poor reviews here.

1 out of 5 eggsElectronics died after 8 uses

Pros: Cheap compared to similar products from other mfrs. Holds 2TB of data.

Cons: The enclosure electronics stopped working properly after exactly eight uses (7 brief, one long to load data onto it), approximately two months after purchase. The electronics only occasionally respond to the host's USB setup queries. I was eventually able to get the box to respond, twice, just long enough to get my data off it.

Other Thoughts: I have not found a way to open the enclosure. The drive itself seems to be working, so it may still be usable if hooked up to another enclosure. I don't know if the internals are SATA, IDE, or proprietary.

Overall, I would have preferred a bobcat.

3 out of 5 eggsadequate

Pros: it still works and hasn't lost any data

Cons: not particularly fast throughput - I could have gotten a 7200rpm WD 2G ext. drive for the same sale price - this one is a (Hitachi?) 5700rpm.

Other Thoughts: shop around a bit next time

2 out of 5 eggsBEWARE - The Drive Is NOT for an Automatic Backup

Pros: Good price,
Large Capacity,
Very Quiet.

Cons: This Drive Is NOT for an Automatic Backup because it goes to sleep after 10 minutes or so. Windows 7-64 did not see it and declared: "Item not found".
You can backup your files manually by clicking on "Try Again" but you cannot do it automatically.

So this drive is useless for me.

3 out of 5 eggsGOREFEST HERE IS WHY

Pros: from how to geek:
To a hard disk manufacturer, one KB is 1000 bytes, one MB is 1000 KB, and one GB is 1000 MB. Essentially, if a hard disk is advertised as 500GB, it contains 500 * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 = 500,000,000,000 bytes of space. The hard disk manufacturer thus advertises the disk as a 500 GB hard disk.

However, manufacturers of RAM don’t sell it in even groups of 1000 – they use groups of 1024. When you’re buying memory, a KB is 1024 bytes, a MB is 1024 KB, and a GB is 1024 MB. To work back from the 500,000,000,000 bytes above:

500,000,000,000 / (1024*1024*1024) = 465.66 GB

Keep in mind that the hard drive manufacturers are using the accurate description of the terms–the prefix giga, for instance, means a power of 1000, whereas the correct term for powers of 1024 is gibibyte, though it isn’t often used. Unfortunately, Windows has always calculated hard drives as powers of 1024 while hard drive manufacturers use powers of 1000.

Cons: so in short you got every MB you paid for..because its windows and ram manufactures that force the use of 1024 base into your head

Other Thoughts: a quick bing(or google) search can do wonders
