1 out of 5 eggsYear Old :: RMA Return

Pros: I have 6 drives in my machine, this is the only one that has ever failed. It's also my first Toshiba drive.

Windows is displaying a 'backup the drive it is failing error'.

So, I'm backing it up as I type this. Any drive that fails with potentially having 3 TB of data on it is a 1 star rating.

I'll also point out that this drive was not nearly as fast as advertised. The cache rate would slow to a crawl at times. My main drive is a SSD.

Cons: Fails in just over a year, slower cache than listed, RMA return process is never fun.

Other Thoughts: I'll be spending a lot of time on researching a new drive now that this big boy has failed.

1 out of 5 eggsKnow what you are buying into.

Pros: Lots of space, surprisingly fast and pretty quiet.

Cons: RMA process when it dies.

Other Thoughts: Thought I’d leave some feedback for would be purchasers. First and foremost these are relatively good hard drives when they work. Now for the gist of things, the RMA process through Toshiba is downright laughable. Go to the website enter your info you’ll be on the path for a quick return. Not so fast, apparently there are 2 different RMA departments that process claims and as I experienced after setting up a RMA I received a phone call stating my claim needed to be sent through the other dept as apparently their system isn’t programmed to direct you to the proper dept. in the first place, huh? But the kicker for me was the HDD that died was from the October 2013 batch and guess what so is this replacement. So either this is a refurb item (probably) or they just happen to have HDD a year old sitting on the shelf waiting for a RMA, well thank you Toshiba, way to take care of your customers.

1 out of 5 eggsOK Drive, lower capacity than stated.

Pros: Quiet, fast with 7200rpm and 64mb cache.

Cons: I got 5 of these drives and each one is only 2.75TB. Even without formatting the drive it only shows 2861459000, so there's no way it's a 3TB drive as stated. Unfortunate, as I needed a lot of space for a drive array; across 4 drive stripe I lose a full 1TB. Even in fake MarketyBytes it's not even 3,000,000,000, so it doesn't even fit in the scam of HDD mfrs. Should we be happy losing 1/4th of a terabyte of a drive ?

Other Thoughts: Drive works, but unhappy about space loss.

2 out of 5 eggsIntermitten I/O Errors

Pros: Cheap and a lot of space

Cons: I am getting intermittent I/O errors. The drive will just stop responding after some time.

Other Thoughts: Formatted the drive using gparted to ext4 format. Using with a RasPi as an always-on server. Everything worked fine, but after 2 weeks the drive would stop responding intermittently. Thinking there was a power consumption feature powering down the drive, I wrote a script that will use the drive every hour so it wont sleep. Still get the I/O error. I have 3 other HDDs hooked up to two other RasPis with no issues. All Sseagate or WD drives, they all work as expected.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: [-] Fast
[-] Run as cool as my WD Greens (2TB)
[-] Nice price (purchased when these were $20 more a piece)

Cons: [-] Aren't free?

Other Thoughts: I cannot speak for those that have had unfortunate luck with their drives. Manufacturers though have limited control over what their drives go through (retail, bare, does not matter) after they've left the manufacturing plant. In 3 days, five of these drives will hit their 1 year anniversary in my unRAID configuration (the first one) whilst 6 others in another unRAID will hit their 1 year anniversary in a little over a month. Smart reports are clean and no problems to report, significant or otherwise.

As to the reviewer that had one hitting 80 degrees CELSIUS? That is 176 degrees Fahrenheit, quite hot to say the least. It should go without saying, that, you should probably power down that machine and find the source. Air flow? (or serious lack thereof?) I keep my home "server room" at 74 degrees F, at 55% humidity (12,000 BTU portable AC with dehumidifying function). I realize this is not something everyone can do either due to design, housing associations/landlord or simply, electric bill. But, in the deep humid south where as I look now on a mid-August day, it is 91 degrees outside at 96% humidity and that is at nearly 3am (the "coldest" time of "night" around here). So, I admit the drives seldom hit higher than 34 degrees Celsius and that is usually only when a parity check is going.

TL;DR - $40 per TB for a relatively fast 7200 RPM 3TB drive. 11 of these drives in two systems, for a year and no issues.

1 out of 5 eggsYou get what you spend

Pros: Its fast. Quiet, Sata 3, and it was on sale for a good price point.

Cons: I should have known the price was too good for quality product. Drive died in a little over 1 year. The drive spins up, heads just clicking and unable to access through drive management in the OS.

Called to get RMA, get transferred to division in Texas, they verify the issue with the drive, warranty status, write up an RMA and send me the info. I box the drive and on the way to the post office I receive an voice mail and email saying that it's the wrong site for returning retail drives and they are cancelling the RMA, In addition I am welcome to call the other site, go through the entire diagnostic account and testing again for them to do an RMA.

Save yourself the aggravation.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drives

Pros: Stores data as expected.

Cons: 1 of 8 was DOA. Replaced quickly by Newegg. No issues since then.

Other Thoughts: I have eight of these retail-packaged drives running in a ZFS raidz2.
I have them in a Norco server case in which sits in a non-airconditioned apartment in NE-Ohio. Drive temps are roughly 28-40C depending on time of year.

4 out of 5 eggsRemote drive

Pros: Purchased this HD to use as a back up storage and installed it in a Stardom HD remote case. The case did not recognize it all. I could not format the drive. None of my computers recognized it. I thought it was dead and returned it for an exchange.

The second drive arrived and produced the same results. I hooked the drive to my daughter's Mac and it recognized the drive immediately. I formatted the drive in fat32 all 3TB's and I am now using it as a go between Mac and windows. It works fine. I do not understand why Window's 8.1 was not able to recognize it before the Mac format.

Cons: I hope it doesn't crash.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great (bought 5)

Pros: Bought 5 from Newegg 4 months ago, plus one more from another retailer, and one 8 months ago. I use 6 of them in my NAS server. No problems. They work great.

Cons: none so far.

Other Thoughts: Toshiba is a relatively unknown drive manufacturer. They bought Hitachi's consumer drive division recently when Hitachi merged wIth WD. Seems Hitachi was forced to sell off the consumer part of the business to someone other than WD (WD took the high-end data center drives). So, these are essentially Hitachi drives, which, as a brand, are highly rated by many people..

3 out of 5 eggsYou can never go cheap to be cheap

Pros: Its fast. Quiet(was) , Sata 3, and it was on sale.

Cons: Purchased this drive on 10/04/2013. It just started making a lot of noise and I fear that it will die soon.

This drive gets extremely hot. I saw temps up to 80*C. I think that is what led to the noise.

Other Thoughts: I usually buy WD, But I took a chance with a Toshiba drive. I expected to get at least a couple of years out of this drive but I will be replacing it with a WD drive.
