3 out of 5 eggsAfter almost 3 years 3 out of 4 drives failed

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Fast, SATA III ,3 year warranty, Hitachi technology with 1GB per platter.

Good price per GB at the time of purchase in this terrible HDD price gouging market. $99 for 2TB a the time of purchase with 10% off with V.ME checkout :D

Extremely, good packaging!

Runs cool, under a constant 1.5TB transfer each to the drives they never went above 35c, a single 200mm fan is blowing on them in a HAF912 case as they are stacked right on top of each other.

Not Seagate!

Cons: Confusing packaging, it says PH3200U on the box but the sticker on the drive drive says DT01ACA200

For a retail drive it does not come with a SATA cable

My system would not boot when I used a translucent SATA II cable, had to switch to a solid SATA II cable.

3 drives failed within a month out of this batch almost 3 years later. Be warned. I purchased 4 of these drives on 6/23/2013 in 10/2015 1 drive failed and I was able to submit it for replacement on acclaim.toshibadotcom. Now is 1/2016 and 2 more drives failed, when I go to submit for warranty replacement, it is no longer available. Instead you receive this message "Store Credit With this option, Toshiba will provide an Acclaim Code credit for use at ToshibaDirect. You can use the Acclaim Code credit towards the purchase of anything they sell. The value of the Acclaim Code credit is marked-up to cover the current price of your product, plus sales tax, and shipping. You'll see the actual value of the Acclaim Code credit on the next page. So I paid 89.99 per drive and I receive a credit for 169.81 per drive but the drives sold on Toshiba Direct only have a 2 year warranty Proof of purchase not required and return of defective drive not required. After I fill out all the info I receive a JBWEB000065: HTTP Status 404 - /support/jsp/.jsp error and cannot continue. So now I am stuck to buy 4 more drives from Newegg instead of claiming the warranty on these drives.

Other Thoughts: The PH3200U is the same as the DT01ACA200. Just one is retail and have 3 year warranty and the other is OEM and have 2 years. I also ordered the 3TB OEM version.

I ordered 4 2TB drives total, I was shipped the original OEM box that Toshiba shipped Newegg. Inside that single box contained 4 smaller boxes, inside each smaller box was a complete enclosed styrofoam box, inside that styrofoam box was the drive sealed in the antistatic bag. Talk about packaging!! Inside each box you will also find the warranty card stating 3 YEAR WARRANTY.

A month ago all 3 of my ST32000542AS started having daily increasing Bad Sectors and Reallocated Sectors the only one that did not have an issue was the ST2000DL003-9VT166. Funny, because it was just one month after the 1 year warranty was over! I said "F this" an swapped out all 4 of the Seagate drives and will never buy another Seagate drive again.

I did not do any benchmarks but transferring 1.5TB of data from each Seagate drive to these drives peaked out about 110MB/s, all one to one; using ICH7 onboard SATA II controller, I am sure it will peak higher with SATA III controllers and SATA III drives. Don't know if it makes a difference but I also used SATA II cables

I was going to go with WD drives but with their inconsistent head parking, intellipower, and naming conventions you have to read many reviews just to know which version you want.

Looking to pick up 8 more and place in RAID5 when prices come down.

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: After quick formatting, it has been working fine. It is fast, I use this primarily for backups.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I have always used WD drives, This was my first Toshiba hard drive and I would consider them going forward.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Storage Drives

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Great Drives. Great Price ($60 each)! No complaints.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: I bought these drives to put in my newest media server. 5 Drive - Raid 5. Works great.
I bought Seagate drives for my other media servers, but these Toshiba drives are holding up great and were cheaper at the time. Hopefully they continue to run this well.

5 out of 5 eggsbuy one..

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: No complaints here -- I could go on about how it blows away my old Hitachi Deskstar, but they aren't really in the same class.

Don't think I've ever had a 7200RPM drive that is this quiet. very nice

Cons: Maybe it *should* make a noise once in a while, so I know it's still there :)

5 out of 5 eggsStill Kicking

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Used as the storage drive in a mini-ITX case for desktop purposes with no issues.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Hitachi's drive assets were split between WD (which sells the drives under the HGST brand) and Toshiba (which previously had only made 2.5" drives). This was done to satisfy Chinese government anti-trust concerns.

What this means is that while drives from both companies will be very similar, they are (presumably) coming from different factories with different managements and all the things that entails.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate After 2 Years

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Gave this exact model 2 thumbs up on 7/26/2013 when we used it in tandem with an SSD and an add-on SATA controller card to form a hybrid drive.
For the past year or more we've been using it on its own as a staorage drive for our entire music collection ripped from CDs as well as for other stuff. We play a large variety of music almost every day, and i can report that the Toshiba 2TB remains fast and quiet.
The retail box version seems to have good packaging, whereas the bare drive version suffered from insecure packing by Newegg's warehouse a couple of years ago.
And, let's not forget the 3-year warranty. So many HDDs now have only a 1-year or 2-year warranty, it's nice to see Toshiba still backing this product with 3 years coverage.

Cons: Wish it was 4 TB

Other Thoughts: We had a couple of old laptops with Toshiba drives in them. They weren't fast (4200 rpm) but they were reliable. This 3.5-inch desktop model has been totally reliable for over 2 years with no dropoff in performance. Let's hope it will keep it up for another 10 years!

3 out of 5 eggsNOT FOR RAID/SERVER USE!

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: Tons of space, great price, 64MB Cache, 7200RPM.

Cons: HOT HOT HOT! I have these in a Norco 4224. They are next to each other, and there are no drives above or below them. I have tons of cooling. They are hitting 119F under load, and sitting about 106F idle.

Other Thoughts: Would be great in my desktop where I have tons of space and even more cooling, but not good in an enclosed space, even with decent cooling.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drive

This review is from: TOSHIBA PH3200U-1I72 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Desktop Internal Hard Drive Retail Kit

Pros: - Speed
- Price
- "Expected" quality....

Cons: - Noise

Other Thoughts: In looking for a well-priced drive that is comparable to the speed of the Seagates (fastest on the market...but unreliable) and the reliability of the HGST/Hitachis (most reliable out there but slower and terrible warranties), the Toshiba seems to fit the bill.

The drive's performance is actually better than I expected. Out of the box, 3/4 I got are reading and writing at 195 MB/s, and the 4th hit 200 MB/s on both read & write, so happy with performance.

4 of these in a RAID-5 array, managed by Intel RST with write back enabled hits around 570MB/s read and almost 400MB/s write when benchmarking with Crystal disk mark with large files (4GB+). This is solid, though not quite as good as using say a dedicated LSI RAID card. Read/write performance for smaller data sizes flies due to RST utilizing RAM for caching in write back. As drives fill up this will slow down.

I will say these drives are loud. Much louder than the Seagates I've used a lot. I don't mind it as I have no problem with HDD noise but if that's a priority for you, then....
