4 out of 5 eggspleased so far

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: have 4 running in netgear readynas 104 using x-raid and each drive (after initial 2 installed) recognized and added to array with no issues.
read and write speeds pretty good for a (basically) raid5 setup and no issues so far.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: so far no regrets

5 out of 5 eggsIt stores stuff and serves it up quickly

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Good and cheap. You can find them every now and then for just a little over $80. That makes it $0.37/GB. Good I/O and they are quiet & cool.

Cons: None, I haven't had any issues, yet.

Other Thoughts: Been using them for 8 months & 4 months respectively in my FlexRAID setup. 1 is used as the parity and the other is just data storage. They work just fine in this setup.

5 out of 5 eggsWorking well at 6mos

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Has been reliable thus far. Designed by Hitachi, which had a good reputation at the time. Design was inherited by Toshiba in their acquisition of part of Hitachi's hard drive business.

Cons: None that I'm aware of.
Typical caveats apply for a 3TB "advanced format" drive - you need to use GPT partitioning and you should take care to align the partitions correctly.

Other Thoughts: This DT01ACA300 is the same drive which is sold in a retail version under model PH3300U.

This family of Toshiba 7200rpm SATA drives includes models ranging from 500GB-3TB. They all have similar model numbers, the 500GB is DT01ACA050, 1TB==DT01ACA100, 2TB=DT01ACA200, 3TB==DT01ACA300. They are the same drive with different numbers of platters (these drives are 1TB per platter).
These drives were designed by Hitachi. Toshiba acquired part of Hitachi's hard drive business, including the rights to this design along with the Chinese factory where these drives are made. They are now sold as Toshiba models.
These drives have no relationship to the 4-5TB Toshiba models. Completely different design.

I purchased the 3TB DT01ACA300 about 6 months ago. It was stress tested under linux using the 'badblocks' utility with parameters -wsv. This is a destructive write test which filled the drive with 4 different patterns, each time checking for errors before proceeding to the next pattern. This test took just about exactly 48hrs. There were no faults.

Since that time, this drive has been used as the parity drive for a small SnapRAID array. In this role, the drive does not spin up very often, so it's actual head flying hours are probably low. When it does spin up though, it is under continuous stress for a few hours. As of 6 months there have not been any problems with this drive.

This drive uses 4KB physical sectors with 512e emulation, ie "advanced format". You should align the partitions appropriately to get the best performance from this drive. Misaligned partitions will work but it hurts performance, particularly when accessing lots of small files.

You will need to use GPT partitioning to use the full capacity of this drive.

When I tested one of these drives out of the case, it seemed quiet to me. However, I have noisy hardware which might drown it out, and some people are more sensitive to noise than I am.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Job Newegg!

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I would like to thank Newegg for the fast turnaround of my RMA. The replacement drive works great.

Cons: I just hope that this Toshiba drive will last, I kinda lost my confidence in that brand. Time will tell...

1 out of 5 eggsOne never made it past the warranty and the other 2 months after

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Not much

Cons: I've had dozens of hard drives over the years and I'm never buying from Toshiba again. One hard drive didn't make it through the warranty period of a year and the other broke down 2 months later. They weren't even being used heavily, most of the time they were at rest.

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Makes clicking sounds. Did not loose any data because it never gave me the chance to write some in.

Cons: Clicking sounds become kinda boring after a couple of minutes.

Other Thoughts: It was part of a combo promotion. Probably this drive was not selling so bundle it with a winner SSD drive to push it.. Next time I will be suspicious of any combo offer.

1 out of 5 eggsBarely made it out of the box

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: It said Toshiba on it and was made this year

Cons: Click, click, click, click. Now was it like that because of the quality of the build or because Newegg shipped it with one air baggie across the country. Either way it was DOA

5 out of 5 eggsThese 5 drives are awesome after 1 year so I ordered 5 more!

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: After 14 months Just as good as the first day that I installed 4 of these in a raid 0 setup connected to a USB 3.0 Addonics 4 drive 1U raid rack. Security cameras run 24\7 and I don't care if I lose any of the information because 6 cameras and 12 TB total continue to overwrite surveillance after 90 days. The current deal Newegg has at 5 drives for four-twenty-five skin-ages is just ridiculously cheap! 12TB for the price of 1TB SSD! Also, 175-185 mbs read and write whether I use 2,3, or 4 drives in raid 0 limited by my hardware on a USB 3.0 connection...But that is still really fast!

Cons: Having to send back all of the Seagate drives and learn my lesson to go with the more reliable Toshiba. The Seagates that worked were 10% faster in the same Addonics rack but were 100% less reliable. I gave the Seagates 1 star and waited to review these drives after 1 year of use (it's been 14 months...nuff said)

Other Thoughts: I order $10k worth of computer hardware from Newegg every year. I never returned anything in my life to them in over 10 years but I bought the more expensive Seagate 3TB drive and most were DOA or failing within 1 week. I returned the Seagate drives and bought these cheaper Toshibas which run silent now for 14 months. Since the warranty is now out (1 year warranty) and they offer the same drives even cheaper I will replace these in my raid 0 Addonics rack setup and use the originals for spares. Will these 5 drives that I just ordered be as reliable as the first 5 drives??? Stay tuned....might as well exercise the new 5 drives while they are under warranty for 1 year.

4 out of 5 eggsNice drive

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 64MB Cache SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s) 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Great price for a nice drive. I am using as my media storage. It replaced a Seagate 1.5TB. The installation was not as easy as I wish for. Searched at the Toshiba site and the site was no help. I was trying to figure out how to use the entire 3TB with Win 7 Pro (Win 7 wanted to use 2 drive). Finally found a forum that helped.

Cons: Lack of support. I could not find anything to help me. Found some suggestion on a forum. It works great. So, the initial configuration was a painful, but it is worth.
