This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: cheap, free shipping, large capacity.

Cons: I did not use it right away. I had it on storage for three weeks. I tried to use it after three weeks of receiving it, but to my surprise it tick and tick and tick and made my pc unbootable.
I tried returning to newegg, but it seemed it was too late. I have tried RMA tru Toshiba website, but my product is not recognized which means what? no warranty because this product is not to be sold in the USA? I have had RMA western digital hardrives no problems. Why is it a problems to RMA this drive?

Other Thoughts: check for warranty. I have to dump my toshiba drive in the trash

1 out of 5 eggsBuyer Beware

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Price

Cons: Wow. Wow. I came here for the low price point on such a large hard drive. Now I know that what I was getting for the low price is a high failure rate product. If it isn't DOA it's going to die.

Toshiba obviously isn't acknowledging their product is flawed by design and manufacture, a respectable company would have taken the loss and pulled the product off the market. Rather, they're peddling them bottom dollar to unsuspecting people.

You know, it's one thing when you sell junk RAM or something- but a HARD DRIVE HAS TO BE A PRODUCT YOU CAN TRUST. DATA IS IRREPLACEABLE. That's the part that sickens me. Data is the product of work, sometimes hard and priceless work, sometimes captured memories such as photos. One would imagine a 3TB hard drive like this would be somebodies main backup, because really-- who here bought two 3TB drives to have one unreliable drive back up another.

Now, TOSHIBA IS JUST GOING TO COPY+PASTE THE SAME PARAGRAPH ON MY REVIEW AS ALL THE REST and take absolutely no action to remedy the situation. Toshiba: Listen, your customers don't feel loved and listened to if you paste the same corporate response paragraph every time. Pull this flawed product off the market.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat hard drives so far

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: 3tb, fast, cool, very quiet. I have ten of these in all, and none were DOA (I was expecting at least one bad drive). The new shock-absorbing packaging seems to be working!

Cons: 3tb. It's hard to give up two of these in a raid6.

Other Thoughts: So far, these are great hard drives for my raid setup. Massive storage compared to the 5-6 year old 1tb Hitachis they replaced. I can use fewer drives now.

2 out of 5 eggsHigh mortatlity rate

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: I bought 2 of these drives a few months ago. One was DOA and NewEgg replaced it. Either that drive or the other one just died and it is being returned to Toshiba under RMA.

At this point, I wouldn't trust my data to these drives without some form of redundancy (RAID-5 or -6 or -10) Backup often.

Cons: High mortality rate in a limited sample. Could be a bad batch but to have 2 drives fail in 3 months is unheard of. I have SATA drives that are 6 or 7 years old and haven't burped. Short warranty: 2 years. 3 years should be the minimum.

Other Thoughts: I hope this was just a bad run for Toshiba. I've used their drives for years. If they are cutting corners (and quality) to reduce costs, they'll be out of the consumer disk business soon.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent hard drive

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet - quieter than my Seagate 7200 rpm drives and as quiet as my WD Green drives.
Fast - I'm getting ~140MB/s sustained writes to the drive in windows file copy.
Cool - runs cool to the touch.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Not toshiba's fault, but be aware that many HDD docks have a 2 TB drive size limit. Best used for internal storage for now (or NAS if your NAS supports 3+ TB drives).

1 out of 5 eggs3/5 working

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap for 3TB of space

Cons: Ordered 5, 2 bad right out of the box!! Sent back to Newegg. Waiting to see what the replacement drives will work like. My odds are 1.66:1 of one of them not working. lol

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap. 7200 rpm.

Cons: I purchased two drives. One failed just after the 30 day Newegg warranty. Lame. Now I have to deal with manufacturer returns.

This review is from: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Quieter than the 2 TB Hitachi I had before it which is what this is. Well packed. and well it's Hitachi. I did buy it elsewhere $117 vs $140 was a chunk. now if I'd waited I woulda saved $17 oops. Ran both the Short test and Extended test twice no issues. (6 -7 hour test O_O there is a noise at the beginning I don't like but nothing wrong with it. It does have the same el cheapo label Hitachi used. ie probably should either copy that label or stick thick tape over it or the print rubs off. Since the warranty is almost up for the old 2 TB that was bought off newegg I removed that one. It turned gooey. This is now my main external drive. Running in a white Vantec external docking station via eSata (USB 3.0 sucks bad. 1. you need a very short cable normally 2. if you need something longer you need extra power even if the one you have is plugged in sort so the only USB 3.0's I'd use are 2.5 inch ones. and I see no noticeable difference in speed. This drive though when transferring stuff to it in some cases is much faster. Otherwise I've been buying Hitachi for years and rarely a problem with NEW drives. I do have an issue with the last used 1 TB drive I bought here and that has to do with if your hands get near the PCB board it hates it. so I spent an extra $10 on the warranty for that. Which might be why Hitachi/Toshiba turned the motherboard around. It doesn't have Samsung memory but haven't had an issue with that chip yet. Number one thing I tell people is before using that drive run both Short and Extended Smart tests on your drives.. and run the short from time to time. (Smartmontools and the GUI for windows etc) there's 2 of them now although one , he's really helpful in getting hard to recognize drives to work though. Like my external Toshiba drive (pure external ie if I took it apart it would be risky. ) came up Hitachi. This drive above is the first one I've had that came up as a Toshiba.

Cons: The racket just when you turn it on is annoying. Label wipes off. Toshiba keeps buying out drive companies I've liked. First was Fujitsu which they didn't honor the warranty :( now Hitachi. Which I hope they do.

Other Thoughts: Smart test!! Also what docking station your using might cause issues. I had a Rosewill eSata the weight of a brick with the 2 TB for almost a month. Almost ruined the drive. In fact every time I'd do a smart test since then 2011-2012... it said replace the drive. It had a bad habit of dropping the drive right off the OS. Don't know why. So some problems here might be the docking station.. The Vantec seems to go to 3TB although at the time it rated to 2TB. There are generics out there that are good. But the PSU is shaky. HDD Guardian and GSmartControl are the two main GUI's for SmartMontools HDD Guardian really great support. ALthough on this drive the external never posted to log. Things he had me do ended up getting my 2 TB External Toshiba to recognize in GSmartControl. I generally replace my main external storage around 10,000 hours. Hitachi does get interesting near 20,000 hours and I've had ones near 90,000 hours. I assume stuck in a PVR.
