The Toshiba MQ01ABDH Hybrid Drive Delivers SSD-like Performance and Responsiveness by Combining NAND Flash and Innovative, Self-learning Algorithms with up to 1TB of Storage Capacity in a Compact Series of 2.5in. Hard Drives
  • SSD-like Performance and Responsiveness
  • Capacities of 750GB and 1TB
  • Usage Pattern Optimization Self-learning Caching Algorithms
  • 32MB Buffer and Toshiba 8GB NAND Flash

Underscoring Toshiba’s 25th anniversary in the discovery of NAND flash, Toshiba launched the MQ01ABDH series of Hybrid Drives which pairs fast, SSD-like performance with the storage capacities offered on today’s leading-edge hard disk drives (HDDs). The MQ01ABBDH is the top-of-the-line series of 2.5in. mobile HDD, offering 1TB and 750GB capacities, onto which Toshiba has applied its Hybrid Drive architecture, which features self-learning user profile algorithms coupled with sophisticated NAND flash algorithms that provide fast performance and file responsiveness while utilizing the 1TB or 750GB* storage capacities supported by the underlying HDD.

Toshiba's Hybrid Drive combines the dual-platter magnetic storage of its highest capacity mobile HDD with wear-resistant NAND flash, where 8GB of fast cache is dedicated for system usage and another 32MB allocated for alternative caching purposes. Together, the integration of HDD provides massive storage capacity while the NAND flash reduces boot time, increases immediate read/write speeds and enhances the overall data processing times, resulting in faster system performance. User benefits include significantly faster system boot-up times as well as quicker access to user applications, whether they be photos, music or strictly data-based files.

Toshiba's MQ01ABH series Hybrid Drive tracks and stores frequently used data in its dedicated NAND cache so that the data is quickly accessible upon host command. Data accesses are monitored to off-load less-frequently used files to mass storage for long term storage, freeing up fast-data access space for data and files that are more frequently accessed by the system user. The intelligence caching schemes used in the Toshiba Hybrid Drive enhances the user experience by making all system boot and data accesses significantly faster while ensuring the long-term accessibility of data stored to the Hybrid Drive.

Toshiba’s MQ01ABH Hybrid Drive series will debut in leading, high-end notebook PC systems followed by successive generations of Hybrid Drives to come.

1 out of 5 eggs1 year to the Day

Pros: Good seek time, ran flawless for almost 1 year

Cons: began acting up - tried first aid, tried repair, too many bad sectors. Died on 1 year anniversary of purchase. Toshiba site says MQ01ABD100H not a valid model number

1 out of 5 eggsWon't buy Toshiba again!

Pros: Worked well until it didn't. Fast and quiet, lots of storage, good price point.

Cons: Without warning the drive died after 7 months of use. Now seeing if I can salvage my daughter's photos :(

1 out of 5 eggsBad Lifetime

Pros: good while it lasted. quick little drive faster than HDD but slower than SSD.

Cons: I bought 11 of these drives on different purchases. 8/11 have failed so far.
Machines will not boot from them with little or no warning. When I plug the drive to a functional PC via USB, it says "failed to initialize disk." "Data error: cyclic redundancy check."

Other Thoughts: On the plus side, the drives were still under warranty. Toshiba reimbursed me with Toshiba credit and I was able to purchase SSDs that will hopefully last longer and be better quality.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great with openSUSE Linux

Pros: Inexpensive, no special drivers, really is much faster. Works well with modern Linux file systems

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The only thing that would make this drive better is if it had more than 8GB of flash storage space

5 out of 5 eggsWorth it

Pros: SSHD's are an oversight, and should be considered more often when on a budget while still looking for good performance with the NAND flash.
- works perfectly on my ps4

Cons: Minor gripe, just with they had 16gb ssd cache options for these drives. I feel 8gb isn't enough in some cases, but depends on what you are using your SSHD for.

3 out of 5 eggsGood drive, Toshiba support stinks

Pros: excellent value especially during sales
more aggressive caching methods than their SSHD competition
SLC flash vs MLC in their competition's current products
7mm version available (different product line)

Cons: Advanced Format (requires correct alignment for XP / cloning)
No overall performance advantage vs their competition
Mfg doesn't release firmware updates like their competition
More difficult RMA process vs their competition (but haven't needed it)
Mfg not responsive for technical support re: firmware in general
Support by their SSHD competition is better in all respects

Other Thoughts: I've used their SSHD / hybrid competition's drives for years with little to no problems as I've always kept their firmware updated, so I bought one of these drives to evaluate.

This product is similar to its competition but its caching algorithms are more aggressive on some testing patterns, but ultimately its PCMark scores are similar. Unlike its competition it has continued to spec SLC vs MLC flash which is excellent, but bad technical support from Toshiba for firmware updates and general responses to firmware requests (even for their enterprise product lines) leaves me unlikely to use this product vs its competition on any significant scale.

As a side note, providing no support for matching firmware versions on their enterprise products for use in arrays makes me blacklist those product lines entirely. If Toshiba's only intention is supporting enterprise clients they should realize informed customers will never buy unsupported array products and they might as well stick exclusively to HP, Dell, etc contracts and forget selling generic versions.

A lack of firmware releases suggests stability in the design, but this position is more marketing than reality as mfgs with similar policies for their mass market products still produce fixes and optimizations for their enterprise product lines at regular intervals. This lack of firmware support for a product using flash memory is unacceptable, and their competitor changed their position to provide regular firmware updates since producing hybrid products.

Toshiba has been particularly bad at responding to requests for this type of support even for their enterprise product lines, so I am unlikely to use any of their products at any level of volume due to this generally irresponsible approach to support. If they want to ignore support requests, they need to provide an automated system which provides firmware based on serial or model number searches like their competition. I have relayed this logic to multiple levels of Toshiba support and their social media support, all to the same mute response so this incompetent support appears to be pretty much universal.

Toshiba may be a good product out of the gate, but pray there are no bugs affecting your particular implementation as Toshiba's level of support for mainstream storage products is basically nonexistent.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat PS4 upgrade

Pros: Love it! GREAT for the ps4, especially if you play a game and do certain things often, they will be cached into the NAND flash part of the SSHD.

Cons: None. Worth the price ! Toshiba is a great company, I prefer Tosh over Seagate. Personal preference.

5 out of 5 eggsWorth every penny

Pros: - wicked fast
- great price when on sale

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: This drive was purchased for my 6 month old Lenovo Ideapad Z710. The OEM Seagate drive (5200 rpm, SATA3) was a major bottleneck. I could see that the disk I/O was low, preventing the computer from running like an i7 should. This drive is a hybrid -- it contains a traditional mechanical drive for capacity, but has an embedded SSD that is used as a real-time buffer/cache for SSD-like performance. I imaged my old boot drive with Reflect, formatted the new drive, installed it, and restored the image. After about 3 - 5 boots (allowing the cache to populate with data), the machine now takes 5 seconds to boot from a powered-off state to the Windows 8.1 desktop. It used to take 30 - 45 seconds. I have used Toshiba drives in the past, and expect this to have the same excellent reliability that those drives did. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 eggsA good replacement for HDD

Pros: Much faster than a conventional HDD, at the price of one.
Fits perfectly for any laptop with a 9.5mm disk caddy.
Improvement of boot time by 3 times after the first 5 restarts.
Much higher read/write rates when compared with a conventional 5400 rpm drive.
3 year warranty, which is always a good sign of a quality drive.

Cons: Not an SSD, will never perform like one.
No support for India.

Other Thoughts: The drive comes in a simple static pouch and a no frills box.
The packaging was effective with the drive snug in bubble wrap.
For use, I had to buy a hard drive case separately, then format the new drive using the full format option. This operation took me 13 hours. Quick formatting a new drive is not recommended at all.
I then created an image using Samsung Recovery, but I've tested a Windows System image as well, and that works fine too.
Fitting and installation was very simple and the drive swap took under 5 minutes.
I first had a problem after two days of running the new drive when Windows 8.1 kept crashing repeatedly, but that I believe today is an unrelated problem.
After about 4 restarts, the drive really shows you it's true colours with windows 8.1 booting (after restart) in less than 20 seconds.
I now see 7 GB of RAM being utilized instead of the previous 3GB that my conventional hard drive used to take. This has made my laptop a whole lot faster and an actual pleasure to use,

This drive is the only other available hybrid drive and since I'm not a big fan of Seagate, I chose this one, which eventually ended up to being cheaper than it's counterpart even after being shipped from the US.
Go for it if you want to give your computer a fresh new lease of life.
