5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

This review is from: TOSHIBA Canvio Desk 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive HDWC250XK3J1 Black

Pros: Inexpensive and fast

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these to use as backup drives. I have filled both of them to capacity about 12 times so far. No complaints. Speed is great, I worry a little about heat in an essentially sealed plastic (insulating) housing.

Cons: - Noisier than some other external drives due to a plastic case with vents.
- No SATA interface.
- No backup button.
- USB 3.0 interface can be fragile.
- Plastic case will not be welcome to some people.

Other Thoughts: For the price this drive is great! Exceeds expectations for speed. I like the fact the vents on the drive allow it to run cool during long backup sessions, even if the noise is a little more due to the open vent case design.

1 out of 5 eggsLinux Users Beware

This review is from: TOSHIBA Canvio Desk 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive HDWC250XK3J1 Black

Pros: Cheap

Cons: Drive firmware is garbage; does not work properly with Linux EXT# format.

The product description states: "Compatible with Windows® OS only". This is totally incorrect.

The packaging notes that it also works with Mac OS X, and says "Compatibility may vary depending on user's hardware configuration and operating system".

At any rate, I've never seen a drive that didn't work fully with Linux, in 9 years of using it, until now. Maybe that's because I've never bought a Toshiba drive until today.

Apparently, some Toshiba drives have a firmware bug that only seems to affect them when formatted as EXTx (tried both 3 and 4). The bug causes the drive to try to park the heads (or some banging that sounds very similar) over and over when idle - which not only makes it annoyingly noisy, but would eventually affect the life expectancy of the drive.

Using hdparm to disable advanced power management apparently does NOTHING. The drive responds as if it disabled it, and constantly tries to park the heads anyway.

You can still use the drive without this problem under Linux if you format it as NTFS (Yuck), or Btrfs. Other formats might work as well, but that's all I've tested so far.

Other Thoughts: TOSHIBA: FIX YOUR FIRMWARE.

I'm very disappointed that Toshiba would take the time to add the Windows Only note to the bottom of their description (which most Linux/Mac users aren't going to read - as this has never been a problem before), instead of taking an hour or two to fix the @#%^ed drive firmware instead. Thanks to this laziness, this drive is totally unsuitable for some media center/pvr applications where the systems expect external drives to be EXT formatted.
