5 out of 5 eggsMy fastest external single drive

Pros: I have four of these and I'm really happy with it. I tested their speed and found out it is the fastest external single drives that I ever had. 200 mb/s read and write. Before my fastest drives were up to 140 mb/s and it was also 7200 rpm but not these fast! I use it for 4k video editing on my iMac 5k so I plug 4 of these and I have a 20 TB of storage for a very low price. Even when the drives are almost full speed drops only to 170-190 mb/s which is still amazing!

Cons: I didn't experience any negatives from these drives

Other Thoughts: I hoped these could have thunderbolt options. It's just that I have only 4 usb3 on my iMac :)

3 out of 5 eggsSome disappointment

Pros: Super large capacity, fast speed (if using USB 3.0). Decent price.

Cons: Enclosure doesn't permit adequate cooling of the hard drive. Internal temperature after being on for 3 hours while transferring files was up to 55 degrees C. I used a 4" fan blowing air towards the lower vent slots to bring the temperature into the low 40s. I was also disappointed that it doesn't have a power switch. I have to unplug it to turn it off. An on-off power switch would've been an expected feature. If it was better ventilated and had a power switch it would've been 5 eggs from me.

4 out of 5 eggsGood disk, software not useful.

Pros: Great storage, stays cool enough, great storage for price. 3 year warranty.

Cons: Included software for using a 5TB with windows XP (yes XP) drivers. Software tries to install an unsigned 32bit Vista driver in 64bit windows 7. Software with no official support of Win 8. The software solution included make no sense. My guess is this is the same software they have been putting on these drives for years.

Other Thoughts: Purchased a pair to create a large external storage space with network shares. Speed of drives was not a concern, just wanted a good, solid, mirrored external system that could be easily disconnected and moved if need arose. In my testing Tmax after 18 hours of data transfer was 53 C. Cooled down to 30 C in 30 minutes.

All hard drives will fail and a three year warranty is a great asset.

5 out of 5 eggs3 Year Warranty 7200 RPM

Pros: Space for extra large files, multiple backups and drive images to save ourselves from system failure. This is a large capacity external with 7200 rpm speed. The three year warranty on externals beats the competition. USB 3 speed and backward compatible to USB 2 (at the USB 2 slower speed). Price is equal to or only slightly more than competing brands with shorter warranties and slower rpm. There is a significant performance boosts for USB 3 at 7200 RPM.

Cons: No on / off button. Skip the included backup software and use something better

Other Thoughts: I believe cloud storage for backup or file storage is not secure; security breaches are rampant and reported every day. My data dates back over 20 years. I rotate backups between multiple externals and swap a disk every 6 months with another family member. I use Acronis software

Most other large capacity external drives are slower at 5900 rpm. Toshiba upped its competitive thrust by offering 3 year warranties as the industry consolidated and reduced warranties to 1 year on low price models. Toshiba demonstrates more confidence in their technology by offering the longer warranty

ALL mechanical hard drives are guaranteed to fail whether it be in 8 years, 2 years, 1 year or next month. The 3 year warranty will save replacement costs if a drive fails within the 2nd or 3rd year. It seems short sighted to me if you buy any other brand with slower speed or shorter support

4 out of 5 eggsTOSHIBA Canvio Desk 5TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive HDWC250XK3J1 Black

Pros: very easy to hook up. plug and play, I like it for what I'm using it for storage. user interface super easy, it checks for updates, thinking about buying another one for back ups. but It can do it all. its just what I prefer.

Cons: it has free updates but they also ask for added protection and better updates if you pay for them, makes you wonder if you are getting the total package

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Inexpensive and fast

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: I bought two of these to use as backup drives. I have filled both of them to capacity about 12 times so far. No complaints. Speed is great, I worry a little about heat in an essentially sealed plastic (insulating) housing.

Cons: - Noisier than some other external drives due to a plastic case with vents.
- No SATA interface.
- No backup button.
- USB 3.0 interface can be fragile.
- Plastic case will not be welcome to some people.

Other Thoughts: For the price this drive is great! Exceeds expectations for speed. I like the fact the vents on the drive allow it to run cool during long backup sessions, even if the noise is a little more due to the open vent case design.
