Pros: I purchased this for the case. I know that this sounds weird, but most external drive cases are terrible.
1: I needed a power button on the front of the drive, CHECK . 2. A drive that could be removed easily, CHECK. (for the sake of honesty this drive is to hold ripped wii backups and I had a 250g sata drive hanging around that would fit the bill nicely, 1.5t would have been overkill) . 3. I needed to be able to stuff that 1.5t drive into my windows homeserver and have it added to the pool of drives, CHECK.
Cons: The drive spinning down out of inactivity is not a problemfor me as I have kids that forget top turn this wii game boot drive all the time and it's nice to know that if they jjust wa;lk away it will spin itself down.
Other Thoughts: NOTE: the drive itself doesn't have the ile spin down on it, bt the external enclosure.

Pros: the Spin Down you mention in the middle of an operation is an indication the drive is somehow bad or your system is.
I am using 4 of these for external storage of large video files and Norton Ghost images that are very large and backed up unattended in the middle of the night. I have yet to have one backup not complete or have one imagenot complete.
It is not these drives.
They only should be idling down after a long period of inactivity.
Cons: none
Other Thoughts: for thsoe that think you cannot stack these...get apiece of rubber kitchen draw liner and put it between two on your desk and they won't move.
if you don't like the light in the front, stop complaining and put a peny's worth of black electrical tape over the light and get on wiht the rest of your life.
These drives don't fail.
Or else...you are welcome to buy a Seagate drive. Go read the reviews for those.

The sleep/idle problem is a big issue

Pros: This is a nicely designed drive, it is dead quite, and having a physical switch on the front is nice.
Cons: I have an OS X box that needs just above 500 GB backed up. I backup using Time Machine, I have never been able to complete a backup with this drive because of the firmware based energy saving spin down.
What happens is that if you have a continuous stream of data going to the drive for over a few hours, it will spin down, and whatever you are copying just stalls. The drive does not unmount, but after it spins down, it wont come back or respond until you turn it on and off, then canceling your transfer.
This is annoying as hell actually. I even worked with Apple support on this and the logs clearly show that the drive just goes awol into an energy saving mode and never comes back.
If you are just going to dump files in smaller increments, such as 100 GB or less, it will probably work fine for you. However if you need to do large chunks, like 500 GB at a time, find another simple non-energy efficient drive.
Other Thoughts: I did try several work arounds including touch programs that write and read from the drive every 60 seconds, no luck. When the drive goes into its energy saver it just does and you can't do anything about it.
Also should be mentioned, I had two of these, they are not stackable.
