3 out of 5 eggsDrives 5/5 Stations 0/5

Pros: Genuine Korean Samsung drives, now gone forever.
In my previous experience quiet, cool, reliable.
Bought four at the closeout sale - drives all OK.

Cons: All four enclosures DOA. Havent't been able to figure if its the USB circuit board or the cute rotary switch.

Other Thoughts: Took the drives out - no way I'll RMA and get Seagate drives in return. At least I can get an enclosure with eSATA or USB 3.

5 out of 5 eggsLast genuine Samsung HD

Pros: Excellent HD inside. When removed from the enclosure and mounted inside PC, despite being green 5400rpm and Sata II, one can copy large movie collection to it much faster than to a 7200rpm Sata II Seagate due to high data throughput. After that you can put it back to the enclosure and hook to your media or BD player, or a media server as USB 2.0 drive, and it works just fine.

Cons: None, once you consciously select this model for the HD inside. Excellent choice.

Other Thoughts: Don't ever pull out its power plug from the outlet: it has Power On/Off Switch. In fact, you don't need to ever power it Off: once you disconnect USB cable or switch off your PC or player, the drive goes to Standby automatically and switches off power to HD inside the enclosure and light indicator. Switch On your PC or wakeup from Standby - and the drive switches On automatically.

1 out of 5 eggsPower Source Is European/Lousy Power Source

Pros: Drive is big but it is 2 TB, suppose to be big.

Cons: The drive is not the problem, the problem is the power source. First the adapter they sent broke of in the outlet. I had to spend almost $20 to get an european adapter kit. Now the wiring in the cable is starting to fail. You have to mess around with the cable to even get the unit to come on. I am shopping for a universal power source, spending more money because of a piece of lousy power solution.

Other Thoughts: This power source should be replaced at no further cost to me.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working

Pros: Shell looks awesome, and it has fancy knob that lets you adjust the ligthing in the bottom, and its sturdy.

Cons: Stopped recognizing the power supply after 3 uses. I used it three times, then put it away, take it back out 3 weeks later, plug it in and it doesnt turn on any more. No light no power, yet the power supply light is on showing current is passing.

Other Thoughts: 30 day returns is not enough to say the product will work! This device i had for 32 days.

Cons: Not the fastest.

Other Thoughts: I have purchased five of these drives over the past two years and have had no issues.

5 out of 5 eggsBest deal around!

Pros: Incredible price on an external drive. You can't buy a 2TB drive for this price without an enclosure.

It does what it's supposed to do. It connects to a Windows 7 machine and is immediately recognized as a hard drive.

I have transferred a couple hundred gig to the drive so far, with an average write speed of 28MB/sec. Not bad. It's plenty for my needs.

Cons: The white light is a little bright for my taste, even when set to the dimmest setting. I'll just put some tape or black paint over part of it.

Other Thoughts: At this price ($79 after rebate with free shipping), this drive is about the same price as ten of the cheapest dual-layer BD-R discs that I can find. Forty dual-layer BD-R's will fit on this disc, so it is one quarter of the cost of BD-R DL's. I plan to put 3D BD rips in ISO format on this drive, so it's perfect for the task.

5 out of 5 eggsA great "Classic" Samsung external

Pros: I bought one of these as my first external 2TB drive over 2 years ago (I had to check my Newegg history to be sure.) It has always worked well, quietly, and with no problems.

I know it is silly but I like the (what I would call) "funky Asian high-tech" look. It looks more like it should fit in with high-end audiophile equipment, rather than a computer. The "goofiest" part (which I like) is the power switch / "volume control." I call it that because it looks like should be a volume control on an amp or something. It controls the brightness of the white LED that lights the underside of the enclosure.

But silly design aside, the best thing going for this is the quality, classic, Samsung drive that it is supposed to contain. My original one contained a Samsung Korea HD203WI. I just ordered another one today (European cord model that Newegg somehow found), so we will see what I get.

Cons: I can't say anything bad about this because I know what it is: It is an older-design enclosure that supports USB 2.0 only. I would not call that a "con" because that is in fact why I'm buying it (for the classic enclosure and what I anticipate to be one of the last of the quality Samsung-made drives inside.)

Other Thoughts: As I said this is more of a "collector's item" for people that know what they are getting, or maybe those seeking the last of the Samsung-made drives.

I would say if you are looking for your first external drive and have (or plan to get) a new computer with a USB 3.0 or eSATA port -- you should look for an external drive that supports one of those connections, because transfers WILL be much faster, of course. But I didn't need that (I already have some USB3 drives), so I wanted this to back up my old USB2-only home server, or perhaps at some point I will take out the drive and use it for something else.

2 out of 5 eggsCheap, which is what you get

Pros: simple to install, lightweight, on-off switch which some externals don't have, runs quiet and generally at a cool temperature.

Cons: Could have a fragile power cable. I have had the drive three days--on the third day it did not power on when used. Jiggled the power cord and it eventually worked again so I don't think it's something internal, but could be a potential warning sign of future problems.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected

Pros: Good speed for USB 2.0
Whisper Quiet
Looks nice
Low heat

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: I plugged this drive in and I must have gotten a newer one because it was already formatted NTFS contrary to what I had read from others. I transfered 130 gigs of data over at a steady 25 MB/s write without a hint of heating up. So far so good. Hopefully it has a long an happy life.

5 out of 5 eggsReal Samsung drive

Pros: The drive inside the enclosure is real Samsung 2 TB EcoGreen. It can be easily removed.

Cons: USB 2.0 only port. Loose warranty when remove the drive.

Other Thoughts: Free tool HDDScan has Features Panel, where you can set AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management), APM (Advanced Power Management), PM (Power Management) for the drive. AAM controls spinups frequency & RPM, APM adjusts drive head parking rules, PM sets Idle Timer to stop the drive. HDDScan also has Build Command Line feature to save you settings and autorun them at each PC reboot for the drive. Otherwise next reboot the settings revert to default. Of course, genuine Samsung Tool could change the drive settings, but was never released publicly.
