1 out of 5 eggsThese are junk Seagate mechanisms

Pros: still 5400 RPM and somewhat cool to touch

Cons: Make sure you 'sudo lshw -C disk' to verify the mechanism. These aren't real Samsung drives. These are junk Seagate mechanisms.

Hasn't even had few hundred hours of uptime in my primary machine and it's starting to fail. Extended SMART test dies at 20% while quick SMART test dies at 10%. I've to rescue my stuff now and use another one of the three Fake Samsung drives I purchased until I get this situation under control.

Here's part of my lshw output. Note the difference (ie. Product field):

*-disk
description: ATA Disk
product: SAMSUNG HD103UJ
physical id: 0.0.0
bus info: scsi@3:0.0.0
logical name: /dev/sdd
version: 1AA0
serial: S13PJ9DSxxxxxx
size: 931GiB (1TB)
capabilities: partitioned partitioned:dos
configuration: ansiversion=5 signature=d7ebab66
*-disk
description: ATA Disk
product: ST1000DL004 HD10
vendor: Seagate
physical id: 0.0.0
bus info: scsi@5:0.0.0
logical name: /dev/sde
version: 1AJ1
serial: S25GJ90Cxxxxxx
size: 931GiB (1TB)
capabilities: partitioned partitioned:dos
configuration: ansiversion=5 signature=000e2a77

The other two drives I bought the same time have some SMART log issue entries too.

Other Thoughts: Seagates are such worthless Pieces of Stuff. [ I actively avoid Seagate taint. ]

Now I have to re-arrange all the drives in my house to leverage what real Samsung [Eco Green] Spinpoints I have as they are no longer made or available.

I will continue to shop with NewEgg cause they are great. (It's not their fault Seagates physically labeled the disks as Samsung and mislead the customer.)

I just wish the Description whould have indicated additional News & Noteworthy info which would definitely help me buy a better drive from them.
1. Seagate apparently bought Samsung's Drive business
2. 'lshw' shows drive as a Seagate mechanism.

Western Digital isn't much better (which also own Maxtor, Hitachi/HGST). Guess I'll have try out the Toshiba's.

Since the internal is Seagate but the external Drive Plate says its a Samsung and nothing about Seagate, I may look into small claims court case or some other way to recoup my cost, data loss & inconvenience.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

Pros: Works as intended. Happy with purchase thus far.

Cons: A tad noisy - I hear a slight scratching sound while my backups run every day. Certainly not a deal-breaker though.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Been a very solid drive so far. I haven't had any issues with it yet (knock on wood). I hope it will continue to work this well.

Cons: None yet

Other Thoughts: I would recomend this drive to others. I would get another one.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives

Pros: Bought two of these drives for my build. They work like they are supposed to every time. Not much else to say.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: This drive has been great. I have had the drive for around 6 months and it has been a great storage drive. The reads and writes are up there with the 1st gen wd green drive, which is plenty for my storage application. Picked it up as a spare FRAPS/storage drive and it records FRAPS video no problem(games on a different drive).

Cons: F3 drives are only made up to 1TB, if they had a larger drive I would've purchased that.

Other Thoughts: This drive is not marketed any different from a WD/Seagate/Hitachi drive, why are there so many arguments on this drives comments page?

2 out of 5 eggsDid not work with my system

Pros: Inexpensive, and a decent warranty term for the price.

Cons: This drive seemed to be incompatible with my system (I was trying to use it in a RAID configuration); it would operate first very slowly and then periodically drop offline, requiring me to unplug it and plug it back in before the system would recognize it again. It's apparently been rebranded as a Seagate "Green" drive, and neither I nor the SeaTools utility found any problems with the drive when it was operating in IDE/non-RAID mode, so I can only conclude that the issue related to compatibility with the RAID configuration.

Other Thoughts: It would be nice if Seagate provided more documentation about system compatibility, warranties, and the fact that this was a "green" drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, no issues yet.

Pros: - 1tb tons of storage space
- Easy to install
- Fast enough for normal use.

Cons: -Loud, seriously this thing sounds like a drive made in the 90's, doesn't sound like it is dying but definitely audible when it is writing and loading.

Other Thoughts: great deal for the price, would definitely consider buying again in the future

4 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: fired right up win7 64 burn in ran reported no bad sectors. Transfer rates 110mb read 65-72 mb write. All in all time will tell if this drive holds up. paid 60 on shell shocker deal

Cons: Minus 1 egg misleading description. I bought this drive thinking being Toshiba it would be made in south korea I wanted the quality. But it is detected as a Seagate green series, and made in China so we will see if the drive will hold up. Side note I did know of Seagate's acquisition of Toshiba's HD division. But still thought I was buying Toshiba quality.

Other Thoughts: Gigabyte 990fx ud3
AMD fx 6200 @ 4.4ghz
msi 6850 1gb
64gb crucial ssd
250gb WD 7200 rpm
this drive
750 watt rosewill hive psu
