1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY

This review is from: SAMSUNG P3 500GB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STSHX-MT050DF

Pros: My previous review needs to be partially corrected. I maintain that the drive is fast and I love that aspect of it. Now jump down to the cons.

Cons: The usb enclosure is a piece of junk. After about 4 months I've had issues with the drive staying connected. I have to keep something under the adapter cable where it plugs into the drive to keep the tail end of it elevated or the drive stop being detected, you lose whatever it was you were doing, and you have to unplug the drive for a few seconds & plug it back in to be detected again. It's absolutely shameful that you get a year warranty on the internal hard drive but only 90 days on the enclosure cable, which I found out the hard way after trying to submit a RMA. DO NOT BUY THIS DRIVE if you are needing a RELIABLE source of storage. I'm currently trying to find a replacement usb 3.0 enclosure to move the internal hard drive to so I can reliably access the data without having to rig it up just to keep using it. Lesson learned - don't buy external drives unless it's from the hard drive manufacturer - Samsung isn't going to take care of their portion of the device it is quite clear. What good is western digital fixing the internal hard drive if the bloody usb controller that is built into the enclosure fails so that you can't access the drive???

1 out of 5 eggsPortable Hard Drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG P3 500GB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STSHX-MT050DF

Pros: fast, USB 3.0, 3 year warranty

Cons: Suddenly died after 30 days or so...bought for my son...and he reported his PC wouldn't read the drive, tried on several PC wouldn't read. Will have to contact vendor.

Other Thoughts: Hopefully, vendor will honor 3 year warranty as it's not been 6 months that this item has been in use.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG P3 500GB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STSHX-MT050DF

Pros: Fast, solid construction, attractive design, no external power adapter required, NTFS, The discounted sale price was so great at the time that I couldn't afford to not buy it.

Cons: Price changes

Other Thoughts: Mine seems to disconnect after transferring about 100 gig if it is plugged into my front USB 3.0 port, Most likely because of interference from my motherboard header cable. It does not disconnect while plugged into my rear USB 3.0 ports coming directly off the motherboard. It also worked fine connected to my USB 2.0 port through a 6 foot extension cable.

5 out of 5 eggsSamsung P3

This review is from: SAMSUNG P3 500GB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STSHX-MT050DF

Pros: Great little drive! It's pretty quiet for an external 5400 rpm drive! I'm getting close to 52MB speeds on my USB 2.0 port. I wish I had USB 3 to really make use of it!

Cons: The cable is short - we're talking stupid short.

Other Thoughts: Don't use the included "Portable Secret" program that came with it. Use something like TrueCrypt Portable edition (freeware) to encrypt your things if you really need to have anything encrypted. According to many sources on Google the encryption program that comes with the drive uses hardware on the controller for the enclosure - so if you ever have to pull the drive out of the enclosure you are basically not going to be able to decrypt your data - if the sources on Google are correct.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad, Samsung.

This review is from: SAMSUNG P3 500GB USB 3.0 2.5" Portable External Hard Drive STSHX-MT050DF

Pros: - Fast enough: I've clocked around ~85 MB/s while transferring large files, ~50 MB/s while transferring many small files. Probably has low IOPs, but don't have the tools right now to measure that at the moment.
- Very quiet.
- USB 3.0 seems to work effectively for getting rid of transfer speed limits so that we're constrained by the actual disk itself

Cons: - Comes with a lot of cruft on the disk by default. I wish this was an unformatted disk instead.
- Longer USB cable please
- Noticeable vibration, but not as bad as I thought it'd be.
- They use metric standard for storage - this means we don't actually get the amount of storage we think we'll be getting, as most OS's measure by powers of 2, not by powers of 10 (TL;DR: 465 GB usable space)

Other Thoughts: Manufacturers should stop using the metric notation for storage, as no one in the computer industry as far as I can tell implements systems that measure in that fashion. Filesystems have used powers of 2 for calculating storage, memory, etc. for a long time - why are we misleading people here? (note: this is a jab at most of the manufacturers, not Samsung in particular.)

This drive also comes with a lot of cruft on it already on an NTFS formatted drive - I would've been cool with it being unformatted instead. What if I was running Mac OS X or Linux?

Most rudimentary measurements I've done have been from both my main drive (Corsair SSD) and my secondary drive (Hitachi 7200 RPM laptop drive.) I've been able to max out at around ~80-90 MB/s for sustained transfers, and ~48-50 MB/s for many small files (the former exercising raw throughput, the latter exercising IOPs - IOPs are directly tied to rotational speeds of a hard drive and whether you're using RAID or not.)

Cable seems sturdy - it's pretty thick, but it is a tad small. Thankfully I tend to keep devices right next to my laptop, but if I had a desktop, this would be extremely annoying. It does suit the job though, and it does use a standard micro USB 3.0 to USB 3.0 adapter, so it should be easy to find a longer cable online.

I'll likely use this as a backup drive on site - it's small and compact, easy enough to carry around if I need to also transfer stuff over to a friend's machine.
