1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work in USB 3.0

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: Has not failed yet.

Cons: Slow, very slow. Had for over a year. Tried in on different systems with known working 3.0 ports. This thing will only work at USB 2.0 speeds no matter what system you plug it into. I can take a different USB 3.0 external drive and plug into the same USB port as this dog and works fine. Plug this thing back in and back to USB 2.0 speeds.

3 out of 5 eggsOuter case has sub-par build quality

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: Not a bad price. Pretty standard cost for a 3TB drive.

Cons: The power jack on my drive stopped working properly after a couple months of use. Unfortunately it wasn't something that could be fixed externally.

The provided USB cable was also quite short, which wasn't a problem for me, but I can see how it could be problematic for other users.

Other Thoughts: I ended up cracking open the case and installing the drive in my computer since the power jack failed on me. The drive on the inside was a Seagate ST3000DM001-1E6166 drive. I use the drive to store media files and it is in almost constant use, and it's still working well. I can't comment too much on its features as an external drive since I've been using it as an internal drive for most of the time I've had it.

3 out of 5 eggsDisappointing backup performance

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: High capacity and USB 3.0 at a good price.

Cons: I purchased this drive specifically to use as an external backup. After plugging it into a USB 3.0 port (and verifying that it connected as such) I installed and ran the included AutoBackup software. The backup started running and I went away for an hour. I returned and found that it had only backed up a few tens of megabytes from the host PC, a brand new Windows 7 machine with an i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and a fast SATA drive. The backup performance was totally unacceptable. I subsequently reformatted the Samsung and now use it for off-line storage. The speed of the drive itself seems to be good in that application, so I attribute the abysmally slow backup performance to the Samsung software.

1 out of 5 eggsAlready failing 2.5 months in

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: Price

Cons: Died within 3 months of ownership. Was enticed by the price/GB, but I should've listened to others. I'm finally buying a large SSD because all hard drives are seemingly unreliable these days... (WD, Seagate, Samsung have all died on me within months of purchase... I've not tried Hitachi/HGST though)

1 out of 5 eggsPoor product

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: Cost at time of purchase

Cons: The external hard drive has not functioned properly since it arrived.
* Original supplied USB 3.0 cable did not work
* The included software was installed said the drive was not functioning properly.
* When connected my computer will not boot up or shut down.
* Drive works inconsistently
---Very unhappy with this product and I had to purchase a different drive for backup

2 out of 5 eggsNAS?

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: Works fine when hooked up directly to my PC via USB. However, when I hook it up to my wireless router ASUS AC68U via USB I cant put files on it that way. I can play the media files thru a media device but if I want to put more media files on it I have to bring it downstairs and hook it up directly to my PC. My desktop does see it on the network but asks me for a user name and password. I dont have a user name and password for the network. I never made one. I dont understand this.

Cons: see above

5 out of 5 eggsSimple machine

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 3TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D301TDB Black

Pros: - It's easy to set up
- It transfers files pretty fast

Cons: - It makes some pretty bit noise when put into heavy work (transferring 50GB file)

Other Thoughts: If you can live with the occasional noise, it's a pretty good machine
