5 out of 5 eggsWorks flawlessly

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: I have owned this device for over a year. I was able to transfer all of me media files onto this drive!

I bought this drive to use with a laptop that I have hooked up to my TV. This drive has worked really well for my purpose!

Cons: Has external power. Cant get around that with the large capacity. I knew this when i purchased the drive.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this for full price wish i would have been able to get it for the price it is currently listed at. :P

5 out of 5 eggsWorks flawlessly

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: This is a huge drive! I was able to back up all media files that I had wandering around my house and put them into one place!

I bought this drive for a media PC that I have hooked up to my TV. I have used this now for over a year and it works really well.

I thought about turning that computer into a server for the whole house and the size of this drive would surely help out!

Cons: Needs external power. I knew this when I purchased it. Cant get around that for this kind of capacity.

Other Thoughts: Overall really happy with this drive.

4 out of 5 eggsLarge Capacity, low cost per TB

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Large capacity, low cost per TB. I have the 5 TB model.

With promo the price was $25 per TB. Lowest price per TB I've ever seen.

Speed seems to be okay when connected to a USB3 port, though I didn't time it when I transferred files.

Cons: The enclosure quality is average for OEM external drives, meaning not very good, but serviceable. If you want a better enclosure that dissipates heat more efficiently, get an aftermarket enclosure that is specifically stated to work with GPT drives over 2 TB..

Or bust it out and use it internally. If you do, and depending on your mobo and SATA controller, you may have to make MBR partitions of 2 TB or smaller instead of one GPT partition. Just saying, it depends on what mobo/SATA controller you have. It's my understanding that the big manufacturers of externals (and Seagate for sure) improve compatibility by having the enclosure's controller report a GPT partition/drive (4k sectors) as MBR (which normally has 512 byte sectors). So no worries if using the drive in its OEM enclosure.

Okay, here's an annoying thing: The operating temperature is stated to be 5C to 40C. Come on now, all my internals have hit at least 45C by the end of a large file transfer, and that is in a big well-ventilated ATX case with 3 120mm fans. Most manufacturers give the thresholds as 5C to 55C. You wouldn't want to see that all the time of course, as statistically, it will increase the failure rate.

So what's with that 40C upper temperature threshold? Are they leaving themselves a pretext for turning down warranty claims? Any program that can read the SMART data will tell you the max temp a drive has operated at.

I did a 2 TB file(s) transfer and the reported temperature reached 52C, about what I'd expect with an OEM enclosure well into a file write lasting a couple of hours.

Other Thoughts: One reviewer states it won't work with Vista, Win7/8. Nonsense. Though there have been reports about file corruption during transfer on Win7 x64 specifically. Mind you, that's only anecdotal, AFAIK. I've never seen that myself, and I'm running Win7 x64.

Another reviewer states there's a Seagate drive in the enclosure. That doesn't surprise me, but I haven't opened the enclosure to verify.

I can't comment on the pre-loaded software, as the first thing I did was format the drive to get rid of it. I'll handle my backups, but thanks anyway.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed right out of the box

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: I bought this from NewEgg's auction store. It was a GREAT for this 4TB unit. NewEgg's fast shipping and handling has always been superb.

Cons: Where to begin. 1) The outer casing was a very flimsy either plastic or rubber not sure of the material it was made from. After getting it connected up to my computer, my computer started having issues with this thing. On the initial power up my pc did see it. But, when I started trying to pull the software and instruction manual off to my local C: my pc kept going into a not responding state where I would have to force a shut down. I then tried copy files from my 1TB drive to this unit and the samething. Not responding and a hard power down.

Other Thoughts: I am know putting the blame on NewEgg with this issue. And I don't know were to put the blame. I have had Samsung products and Seagate products and never had issues with any of them. I am seeing a lot of other posts throughout the internet where this units are dying within a 6 month time.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Works great, Just as expected for an external drive. Haven't run into any issues so far.

Cons: Sometimes, it takes it a few seconds to wake up after being inactive for a while. It is connected via usb 2.0 right now, though, so that might affect it, too.

5 out of 5 eggsOwned for 1 Year Now - Very Quiet and No Issues

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Very quiet, low vibration when running. The case is larger than my recent Buffalo external purchase, but the texture on the Samsung is quite appealing. The USB 3.0 port locks into place perfectly and even with pretty rough bending, has not popped out. Speed is very mediocre.

My little girl knocked it off my desk while it was doing a transfer and it continued with no issues, didn't even seem to hesitate.

Cons: The speed is a bit slow. I was doing real world file transfers (not simulations) and was only able to max out about 38MBs, which included both small (less than 50kb) and large (greater than 2GB) files. The unit is plugged into a USB 3.0 port. I just recently purchased a Buffalo external drive, that I am getting closer to 100MBs with the exact same transfer.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this. It may not be as fast as the other external I purchased, but I think the extreme quiet and low vibration makes up for it. It is used as an external storage, so high speed is not truly a concern.

5 out of 5 eggsGood backup drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: USB 3.0
Quiet
Nice Looking

Cons: I think the internal drive is 5400 RPM so it is slow for random reads and writes.

Other Thoughts: I have 2 of these hooked up to QNAP NAS as an external backup drive. I have my NAS backup about 1.5TB during a weekly full backup and hourly incrementals. Needless to say this thing gets written to a lot. After about a year in service I haven't had any issues.

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: 4TB

Cons: No longer powers up after 6 weeks. I would pass on this and get another brand to avoid the headaches.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor Quality

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Price and Capacity.

Cons: Only lasted 2 weeks after initial use.
I transferred over 2.5 TB of data to this drive for a safe backup medium. What a mistake.. The drive will no longer connect to any of my computers. What a way to loose all that data, guess it's a good thing it was only a backup and not something critical.

Other Thoughts: Used to be able to rely on Samsung and Seagate to put out quality products. After reading other reviews on this unit I am not so sure about Quality anymore.

1 out of 5 eggsSamsung D3 4TB Ext. HDD - Update, Drives Failing!

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: - Low Price on Sale
- Large Capacity.

Cons: - 50% Failure Rate after 6 Months Use!!
- Drive Enclosures are not as Sturdy as Seagate Enclosures.
- Drive Read/Write Speed is Less than Equivalent Seagate Enclosures.
- No Heat Sink in HDD Enclosure.

Other Thoughts: These Samsung D3 External HDD Enclosures have Seagate 4TB HDD in them. I had previously written a review of these enclosures when I had them for less than a month in use. I purchased Eight of these 4TB drives because I thought they were a great deal at US$109/each. When I first purchased these drives, my testing indicated that they were slower than the equivalent Seagate Expansion HDD Enclosures and that the enclosures were less sturdy but I gave them 4 eggs.

I have encountered Two Major problems that make these Samsung D3 HDD's completely unacceptable for use.

First is that the drives drop connection to the server/client PC when I was attempting to back up drives to these external drives. I was never able to write more than about 100GB worth of data to the drive at any one time without the Samsung drive dropping out. I would have to unplug the drive and re-plug it in to have the drive recognized by the network. Using these Samsung D3 HDD Enclosures to back up storage drives was impossible for me.

At the 6 month mark, these drives have started to fail catastrophically. By that I mean that the drives will just stop and drop off the network and fail to be recognized, or anything else. All the data on the drive is lost. I took a drive that failed out of the enclosure and mounted it into a server bay to see if it was just the enclosure driver board. Nothing. The drives were dead. So far, I have had 50% failure of these Samsung D3 4TB HDD's.

Fortunately, I have backups (and backups of backups).

These are literally the first Seagate HDD's I have ever had fail. I have Seagate Enclosures purchased before and after these Samsung D3's. None of them have failed or give any indication of problems. I purchased these drives in 3 separate lots to minimize the chance of failure from one particular batch/run of HDD's. All of them seem to have the problems.

This is disconcerting, to say the least. I have only had problems with the Samsung D3 4TB Drives. I have a couple of the Samsung D3 3TB External Drives and those seem to be working fine. So Far.

In conclusion, The price of these Samsung D3 External 4TB HDD made them very attractive, especially if you are purchasing quite a few. The high failure rate and dropping out when transferring lots of data make them completely unacceptable as storage media.

Spend the extra US$20 and buy real Seagate HDD's and Enclosures or spend US$30-US$40 more and buy Hitachi or WD drives. It is definitely worth it to buy better drives if it saves you the hassle of having to fix a bunch of failing drives and worrying whether you have got everything backed up immediately on multiple drives.

I will not be buying Samsung HDD's again.
