1 out of 5 eggsFailed after a few months

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Worked well while it worked.

Cons: Failed. Unrecoverable.

Other Thoughts: Don't trust anything from Seagate, their quality control is terrible (I used to work for them, it is not a priority anymore). Samsung used to be good, but since Seagate bought it it can't be trusted either.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: this is my fifth perfect one. I use seagate disk manager , delete, then repartition into 4 partitions. transfer speeds consistent over 100mbs on 100gb transfers. i use ssd for OS so these are mainly data. i like them better than wd and seagate. less fall prone and nice led light clearly shows operation

Cons: none.

1 out of 5 eggsNever worked

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Looks nice, good sale price at 109.00 plus free shipping, good specs

Cons: Tried to so a system backup on the external hard drive. Never worked. Just gave me an I/O error. No customer support after normal business hours. Have a business with no backup right now as I wait to call support and get it fixed. VERY FRUSTRATING. NO PHONE NUMBER ON BOX OR MANUAL.

Other Thoughts: I hope it gets resolved. People don't have time to deal with faulty Samsung stuff that really isn't even Samsung.

3 out of 5 eggsSeagate in Metric bytes

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Works.. So far
Seagate HDD inside

Cons: Storage space is measured in the metric byte-type where everything is multiples of 1000 bytes, instead of the binary 1024 bytes that most of us have become accustomed to.
That said, Windows sees this drive as 3.63GB; 4,000,776,187,904 bytes, to be exact.

Other Thoughts: Besides shorting me almost 500MB, I was pleasantly surprised to see that there's a Seagate HDD inside the enclosure. I didn't read too many reviews prior to purchase as I didn't want to miss a sale, so that's nice plus.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT PURCHASE.

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: The case looked pretty. Seriously, that's about all it's got going for it.

Cons: I got in total 5 drives (4 purchased immediately through a NewEgg eB** Auction, 1 purchased some time after). All 5 drives are bad. ALL OF THEM. 3 were DOA and 2 were reported bad by Seagate's software. They were installed and that's as far as I got. I can't use them, nor can I return them due to a eB*y/Paypal/Seagate.

Utter garbage. I can't blame Samsung in this since they're Seagate hard drives. But DO NOT PURCHASE THESE. EVER. (I'd rate it a -5/5 if I could.)

Other Thoughts: I used to trust Seagate. I've used their hard drives for years with virtually no issues. This has completely shattered my trust with them. And their warranty page pretty much says "too bad, so sad". Completely awful. I don't think I will ever be able to purchase another Seagate drive again.

1 out of 5 eggsStopped working in less than 7 months

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Price at the time of purchase was awesome. Data transfer rates were great (could watch shows/movies off of it), plus of course an amazing amount of storage.

Cons: Now all that data appears lost. Just makes a beeping sound as if it is unable to read the data and no longer is recognized.

Other Thoughts: Let's see how well they honor the warranty and whether there will be a silver lining in that, Doubtful.

Had preferred WD, so this confirms my bias.. even if both seem to be tread carefully situations these days with such big drives.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't buy again

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: 3.6 TB total storage space. When working it transferred and stored data very well.

Cons: Broke down and died after just a few months of use, USB connector was defective and had to be replaced 1 month after purchase. I lost a lot of data and most of it was unrecoverable because of clusters of bad sectors within the drive.

Other Thoughts: Forget about this brand and try WD instead. I was given a used WD 500 GB Drive over a year ago and have experienced no issues with it whatsoever.

4 out of 5 eggsSamsung D3 4TB USB3.0 Ext HDD STSHX-D401TDB

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: - Low Cost.
- Quiet
- Reliable
- Large Capacity
- 3 Year Warranty
- USB 3.0

Cons: - Not the fastest External HDD available.
- Difficult to remove the outer case without damage to the case.

Other Thoughts: These Samsung 4TB drives were on sale for the lowest cost I could get 4TB HDD's of any kind. The internal drives are Seagate 4TB 5900rpm drives and they came with a 3 year warranty. I normally buy Seagate drives and have been very happy with them (I own more than 20) for reliability and longevity. Seagate only offers a 2 year warranty on their External HDD's so I bought the Samsung version instead.

I do not use the included backup software by either Samsung or Seagate so I cannot speak to the quality or usability of that. I can only speak to the actual physical hardware.

I have eight of these Samsung D3 drives. Some are still in their original enclosures, some are in a NAS RAID array. I will say that the Samsung enclosure is different than the Seagate enclosure. The Seagate enclosure is more angularly rectangular with an internal metal heatsink and little space between the drive and the plastic enclosure walls. Samsung has a larger enclosure with no metal heatsink and rubber bumpers about 5mm thick to cushion the actual HDD in the enclosure. The Samsung enclosure is made to sit edgewise where the Seagate is made to sit flat. It is hard to say whether the Samsung has better heat management than the Seagate enclosure which I put on its side to be like the Samsung. The Samsung enclosure has better ventilation than the Seagate enclosure.

Performance wise, I believe that the Seagate enclosures are slightly faster than the Samsung enclosures based on direct comparisons between equivalent file transfer read/writes to both. The difference is no more than 10% and often less than 5% depending on the type and size of files being transferred.

If you take the HDD out of the enclosures (voiding the warranty) and put them in a server/PC/NAS, the drive performance is improved and the drive performance is the same whether it came out of a Samsung or Seagate enclosure.

I recommend these Samsung 4TB External HDD if you can get them on sale. I paid US$109 each for them at Newegg which was the lowest price I have seen to date for 4TB HDD's. So far, out of 10 drives purchased, I have had Zero DOA, Zero with Bad Sectors, and Zero with read/write failures or corruption. They seem to work good in a NAS RAID (RAID 1) configuration and I use them as drives in video servers where they are being read and written to every day and are running 24/7.

I gave the rating of 4 eggs because these drives in the Samsung enclosure are not as fast for read/write speed as the equivalent Seagate HDD enclosures.
