5 out of 5 eggsMassive Storage

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: A lot of storage at a really good price
But . . . .I have no intentions of using them as USB since a great number of back-up software has difficulty with USB connectivity. I am installing them internally to replace a 1.5TB Raid Array. that will be 6.5 TB increase without redundancy . . .yes it is taking a risk, but worth it!
My back-up strategy always has redundancy for critical data.

Cons: I can't see any as of now

Other Thoughts: The drive in the case is a 5900 RPM drive which is more than adequate for the average, non-gaming, PC. I use a 10K drive for my OS. I want to use them for storage only to create, store, and retrieve back-ups from client computers as I am doing repairs. I have found/validated that the USB interface is often flakey when using mainstream back-up software which caused me to move my backup to an internally/networked attached drive for reliability. With certainty it is a BIOS/Controller conflict between the Motherboard/USB Card/External USB Drive that often cannot resolve and reports file size errors or read/write restrictions.
Often these drives (or drives just like them) get blamed for fault when they are most likely perfectly fine.

3 out of 5 eggsSooo slow

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Cheap, looks nice, Samsung brand, 3 year warranty

Cons: Painfully slow - Using this in my 3.0 USB port, this thing only gets 33.8MB/s write speeds. I have a Hitachi 3TB External HD that is 3 years old that is 10 times as fast at backing up the same data.

Other Thoughts: I only have owned this drive for a week, and have since only did a full format on it (that took all night and day, 12+ hours)...So I am not sure if I got a lemon yet.
Will update if anything happens, but so far, not very happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 eggsSAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Picked this up here when it was on sale for 125 which is a decent price for a 4Tb drive.
DO NOT let it auto-run and install or you'll have allot of cleanup to try and het rid of it.
Formatted out to 3.63Tb NTFS running Win 8.1 Pro x64.

Software and manual come pre-installed on the drive so if you want to keep it copy it over before you format it, you can always go take a look at it later if you want to try it.

I always do a full (Long) format on all of my new drives before I use them. This is the best time to test your new drive for any problems or bad sectors before you place anything important on it. Quick format is the default option so click it off. It'll take a little time but I feel it's best.

Runs quite, can't hear it over my PC and it's pretty quite..

Cons: Hangs my system, it Freezes my system when waking up from sleep mode. I'm not sure if its the software or hardware related yet. Will update when I figure it out

Software has a very high impact on startup times!

Cable is a bit short

Won't work with my TiVo box :( I knew that, but wish it would

Other Thoughts: Good value especially when its on sale

Taking off 1 star due to the poor software

2 out of 5 eggslong & short

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: - Drive inside is Seagate & comes with a 3-year warranty.
- Price- Usually you can find these for $120-$125 (lately, 8-2014) which is cheaper than Seagate's own. That's as cheap as I purchased Segate's 4tb back in 2013 black friday.
- Decent speed in transfer

Cons: -backup software CRASHES winXP with current service packs (with no special drivers, nothing extreme). (am returning because of it)
-there is no external power switch nor green 'off' for the hard-drive. Plug it in and it runs full-on. Unlike Seagate's 4tb which powers down when not searched.

Other Thoughts: For an always-on external hard-drive, if you can find them cheap they're a decent option. Personally I like the box powering down when not in use. I was a bit upset with the thing crashing my STABLE xp system - as it was the purpose I bought the drive, to back it up. But I got it back with system restore. I'll do it the hard way next time without taking risks on 3'rd party, unknown, BAD backup software. Other reviews alluded to issues and I should have sided with caution.

4 out of 5 eggs4TB problems with older Windows

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Solid drive, runs reasonably cool, and relatively fast data transfer with USB 3.
However, if you are running any Win7 or earlier (newer versions of Win7 64-bit may not have this problem), you may have some difficulties in using all the capacity of this drive. If you have WinXP, or 32-bit Win7, you definitely won't be able to access all 4TB. This is not a problem with the drive: it's a limit built in to older versions of Windows because at the time they were written, drives this large were simply undreamed of. There is a workaround, though. Go to (support<dot>microsoft<dot>com<forwardslash>kb<forwardslash2581408) (I had to do it that way so NE would accept it!). It tells you how to configure your version of Windows for HDs larger than 2TB.

Cons: Manufacturers need to let consumers know of this difficulty in their literature. A utility to "adjust" the OS configuration would be nice!

4 out of 5 eggsGood Drive but not compatable with R7000 Nighthawk

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: Good drive, fast backup.

Cons: I bought the drive to connect to a Netgear Nighthawk R7000. I get corruption every time. It is not on their compatible drives list. I should have done my homework better.

5 out of 5 eggsSo Far So Good. No Complaints

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: It runs cooler than any of my Seagate or WD 2TB & 4TB external drives. I also like the way the power saving works, it doesn't totally disconnect like the others I have do. Speed seems about the same as other brands having the drive sit horizontal rather than upright vertical is more stable and harder to accidentally get knocked over. The steady large power indicator when plugged in and flashing when in use is a nice touch. In all it's the best value in external hard drive storage at the moment. The 3 year warranty is also better than the 2 year other brands offer.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I've had great luck with Samsung SSD's, hard drives and other products over the years. Even though others that have opened these up say they've found the drive inside to be manufactured by Seagate the execution of the whole package is better yet it's cheaper than Seagate or WD 4TB offerings at the moment. Time will tell how long it lasts.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

This review is from: SAMSUNG D3 Station 4TB USB 3.0 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive STSHX-D401TDB Black

Pros: This drive was first installed on a network port and the network port blue screened my PC and I thought for sure that it paper weighted this drive. But no I plugged it in and no data loss with no errors on the surface test.

Cons: None at all

Other Thoughts: Get this drive. I will get another if I ever find a need for more.
