2 out of 5 eggsIt worked. For an hour.

Pros: Surprisingly quiet, nice form factor, Lacie tech support was accessible and helpful.

Cons: The fact that I needed tech support in the first place. Oh, and that the drive failed on the first day.

Other Thoughts: Hooked the drive up and the computer recognized it immediately. Decided to reformat to NTFS. The process took about an hour during which the drive got very warm, but not particularly hot. After the reformat, the computer rebooted spontaneously. I figured that's just how the drive was set up to work. After the reboot, my computer did not recognize the drive. I pulled the USB cable and reinserted hoping that would solve the problem. My computer rebooted. I switched the drive off. My computer rebooted. Never again did my computer recognize the drive. Called Lacie tech support and got through in less than 5 minutes! They suggested I try the drive on a second computer. Since I don't have a they suggested the most likely culprit was a "defective or failed controller." Sounded like they’d heard this complaint before. I requested an RMA/refund (didn’t buy from Newegg because they were out of stock).

3 out of 5 eggsWorked well, for 9 months

Pros: Fast drive, good capacity, Good Technical Support from LaCie

Cons: Drive would occasionally have read errors and I would end up having to reconnect the cable to my PC.

5 days ago, the drive would spin up but no PC/Mac/Linux box could read the drive. I suspect it to be the IDE to IEEE 1394 within the enclosure to be the issue.

Other Thoughts: I purchased the IEEE 1394 version of this drive and it seemed to perform very well. There were some issues communicating with my Dell E1505 Laptop, but I believe it was a driver issue. The drive did not work very well but LaCie's support is rather helpful.

If the interface controller fails and the drive still works, the IDE drive within can be removed and used as an internal drive

4 out of 5 eggsBe not afraid

Pros: I am very pleased with this device. I have recommended it to others as a purchase. I use this to back up my my documents and other important bits on all of my PC's (4 total).

Cons: My Shuttle XPC will not recognize this drive through the front USB Ports and in general resists my attempts to attach it Even in the rear USB ports. (I usually get a message that says that I have changed my Boot sequence if I leave it connected when I restart) I can still get it to function if I wrestle around with my device a bit. So if you are an XPC user you might want to re-think your purchase

Other Thoughts: Heat- this little guy gets hot. I never leave it up and running, I only turn it on when I am doing my back ups or need to use it. This Drive works right out of the box as a plug and play drive (Like a USB stick) with my DELL at work, my Toshiba tablet PC and my Frankenstien gaming machine at home (only the Shuttle XPC has problems). Not much else to say.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive

Pros: Great drive, fast copy, quiet, worked immediately out of the box, no formatting needed or drives loaded with XP. So far, it's great.

Cons: The USB cord is too short.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Performer

Pros: Looks great
Solid performer
Reasonable price
Fair amount of storage

Cons: Somewhat slow transfer
Formatted for FAT32

Other Thoughts: I got this to replace an external drive that had died. The LaCie design is quite pretty, in a minimalist way. The only external control is the power button, and the only external indicator is one LED. The contrasts with some other enclosures that light up like Vegas at night. The only downsides are a slightly slow USB 2.0 transfer rate. The drive is formatted for FAT32, so I elected to reformat, which took forever.

Don't hesitate if the price is right and the size fits what you need.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works fine as plug and play on my Windows XP system. As with the prior reviewer I questioned if it was working because the on/off button didn't light up. However the LED on the back lights up when it is on.

Cons: none.

Other Thoughts: Works so well as a backup that I ordered another one.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: None to speak of.

Cons: It died upon opening and using of the product - owning a MAC I look to see what Apple sells on their website prior to purchasing as some products work better on Macs, but this product died even before turning it on. Looked through reviews on similar products by Lacie and it appears to be a common problem.
