Power supply Failure
- Pros: This is a decent NAS device although it is a bit noisy. I haven't installed the newest firmware but apparently it includes an iTunes server so that you don't need to duplicate your iTunes library on each computer, rather point it to this drive (assuming that's where your collection is stored) and serve it up. I'm basically happy with this device, (see cons).
- Cons: I thought I'd lost my entire music and video collection because the drive was making noise, (similar to when the drive dies), and after powering down, it wouldn't power back up. I ended up reading similar posts at NewEgg and discovered I should first replace the power supply before spending $1200 for data recovery services. Lacie support was great and I'm back in business.
- Other Thoughts: I found Lacie tech support to be very accommodating and they basically said that if I ever have a power supply problem again, (even if its out of warranty), they'll most likely simply replace it because they know their supplies have a tendency to fail.
works fine but not Gbit
- Pros: Easy interface, all the options most users would ever need.
- Cons: During power up the switch reports Gigabit speeds, but once operational it drops down to 100Mbit.
Also, doesn't interact with a Windows Domain for authentication.
- Other Thoughts: I can't say for sure whether it is this device or the switch that causes the 100 Mbit speeds...my gut says it's this drive's firmware/OS. Other devices on that switch are humming along at Gigabit. Disappointing since we move a large amount of data to it on a regular basis. We alternate between two of these drives. They're both still quiet and their power supplies are fine...maybe we got lucky?
Good At First...
- Pros: At the time, inexpensive NAS. Installation through my Vista laptop was not too bad but it took more time than I'm willing to admit to before my 2 XP machines were able to share files to and from this product. Transfer speeds seemed well enough for me though deleting large files containing a high number of items took way too long. I connected this via RJ45 connection into my router.
- Cons: Stopped working after 13 months. I have not been able to determine the cause of death yet but it was much louder than normal just before the end. Normal loudness for this unit would often rival my XP desktop with 3 90mm fans set to high as well as the 800W PSU's fans.
- Other Thoughts: I will be contacting Lacie to see what options I have since it is still within their warranty. Also, I feel the installation software could have been better in setting up the unit across a multi computer (and multi OS) network.
