5 out of 5 eggsA good experience so far.

Pros: Firstly, it's huge! Also, 7200 RPM and USB 2.0 make for fast transfer rates. It comes formatted in FAT32, but I re-formatted it to NTFS without any problems. I didn't make any partitions though, I just followed the provided instructions on how to format. I also like the power switch on the back, so it doesn't have to be unplugged every time I want to turn it off (like my old external HDD). It also helps alleviate the issues below...

Cons: Ok, so it is loud. The cooling fan turns on periodically, and the read/write noises are louder than most drives I've owned (internal and external). But really, if you're getting this drive, you probably want to use it for archival/backup, so it won't be on constantly anyway, or you are doing some serious video production, and will have other sounds to worry about. As mentioned above, the power switch makes it easy to turn off when not in use. If you do plan on having it on all the time, just don't put it in your bedroom. :)

The USB cable is indeed short (around 3 feet long), but it is another good reason to always save the cables from old devices you get rid of. I have a very compact workspace, so the original cable hasn't been a problem for me.

Other Thoughts: Since I've only been using this drive for 3 days now, I haven't really put it through its paces. I have, however, loaded 157GB onto it so far, and it has performed marvelously.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Work Horse

Pros: Good Design, Lots of storage space. I play all my ripped movies from this hard drive and stream them to my Xbox 360. I have never had a problem with this hard drive freezing or skipping during playback. Consistent performer.

Cons: A little heavy, blue light on front is super bright and a little annoying for me, a tad noisy.

Other Thoughts: Good Deal. So far its been bulletproof. Ive dropped it more than once. Would recommend.

1 out of 5 eggsShort USB cord

Pros: Big storage, included fan, good cache size

Cons: The short USB cord when used in conjunction with a laptop causes catastrophic pulling of the hard drive off of wherever you put it, hard drive fails, I hope you have your files backed up!

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Good Drive

Pros: Great size, solid case, stays cool, fast speeds. I see folks complaining about failures. I have had this model for almost a year and bought another 2 months ago. No problems here, about to buy a 3rd.

Lacie is really the way to go. I have about 6 of their 500GB models, and none of them have failed me in close to 2 years.

Cons: None. I would list the size after formatting, but cmon...every drive suffers from this. It could be just a pinch noisy, but it doesn't bother me. Like all other lacie drives I purchased, extremely short usb cable.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed during repartitioning

Pros: Blue light indicating activity was cool, and very bright.

Cons: The drive failed after repartitioning using Disk Utility. I tried to create 100 GB of FAT32 and the rest as HFS+ but the red light on the drive appeared during the process, indicating drive failure. The drive was also louder than a comparable Maxtor drive.

2 out of 5 eggsDead after 2 weeks

Pros: Quieter than my Simpletech drive.

Cons: Dead after 2 weeks of normal operation. Maybe I got a "bad egg" from the batch (pun intended, lawlz). Lacie support was HORRIBLE.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg's return policy is solid gold. No questions asked, they provided a return shipping label and will replace / refund.
