The LaCie Ethernet Disk offers high performance storage with Gigabit Ethernet for sharing important files, storing web servers, backing up critical data, and archiving folders. The Active Directory support enables easy integration into your office's networks. The Ethernet Disk frees up file servers by providing independent, stand-alone storage accessible to anyone on the network. Share it with as many as 25 users simultaneously and access your data remotely via the web (HTTP or FTP). The LaCie Ethernet Agent is included for automatic drive mapping and direct access to shares. The web-based management tool, which comes in multiple languages, makes for easy configuration. Use the four Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports for backup on external hard drives or capacity expansion. Its sturdy, slender aluminum design can be stacked or fit into a 19" rack.

4 out of 5 eggsgood NAS for moderate needs

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to setup, 1U rackspace, reliable (we have some that have been running 24/7 for 3+ years old and no problems)

Cons: Slow, not upgradable (without invalidating warranty)

Other Thoughts: In our office we have bought three of these units over the past few years (1TB, 2TB, and a 4TB) and have had no problems ... other than needing more storage space. They are not the fastest units out there, but for simple data storage they work just fine. We store multiple GB files on these, and have had NO problems transferring a lot of data to/from.

1 out of 5 eggsEven Lacie doesn't belive this product works

Pros: If you are lucky and they work, they are priced very aggressively. If they don't work, LOOK OUT...

Cons: Locks up under anything that even appears to be a heavy load.

I recently purchased one of these to replace another NAS device that was too small. Hooked to my network and began copying approximately 2Tb of data from the other NAS device. After about 1.5Tb the unit locked up and cannot be rebooted. Now the shocking thing is that Lacie technical support tells me that I should not expect to be able to copy 1.5Tb of data from one NAS device to the Lacie 4Tb device because and I quote:

"Regrettably as you noted these units are not made for large data dumps. The memory and CPU would not be able to handle such demands. These units are pretty much storage locations and will function with small bursts but will have issues with anything large as the CPU and Memory can't keep up with the demand. Sort of like traffic control is too short staffed for so many arrivals. Without a better CPU and Memory this will regrettably happen." - Glenn H

Other Thoughts: This unit says it is for up to "25 users", but a single user writing to it apparently is enough to not only lock it up, but to destroy the OS!

I would have thought that I got a bad unit, but units that have been purchased previously also have "mysterious" lockups, but until now tech support didn't have any idea why.
