5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Hard Drive

Pros: I bought this back in 2008 and it's been going strong ever since. Need I say more?

Cons: Absolutely none.

Other Thoughts: Firewire (IEEE 1394a) is faster than USB 2.0.

1 out of 5 eggsMakes aweful lot of noise

Pros: e-Sata, firewire

Cons: Worked fine for 2 months and started to make lot of noise ( 2 servers in my room were silent compared to this drive) , I contacted lacie but their customer service is awful; their response time is slow and they try to present the same material that's found on the website , that's unrelated to the problem.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid External HD

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing, good transfer speed, on/off switch

Cons: A bit pricey for the storage

Other Thoughts: I use this with my MacBook. I have two partitions: a bootable clone drive and a time machine backup. I have experienced no problems with either partition and the transfer speeds have been impressive, especially with larger files.

5 out of 5 eggsBeen great for 1+ years

Pros: Still works and at a good speed. Nice housing makes it easy to put just about anywhere in your office

Cons: It's got a blue light on it, when it's powered on. Some see this as a con, for me, this ligght = everything is ok. So as long as it's not like right next to your bed it shouldnt bother you.

Other Thoughts: Works great with Macs and has been reliable so far.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: fairly fast, quiet, cool light, several connection options including USB, Firewire, etc

Cons: setup software only included on small partition on drive - not downloadable from site.

Other Thoughts: drive works well, quick, and large enough for big storage. plus it looks great.

4 out of 5 eggsgood backup for Linux systems

Pros: Purchased as backup drive for Linux system (reformatted drive to ext3 filesystem). Multiple interfaces were a plus for me. I also like having an off/on switch, as the unit is used only intermittently.

Average transfer rate using IEEE 1394 (firewire) interface & rsync (with compression) is about 8 MB/s. Compares favorably with average transfer rate of 8.8 MB/s over ethernet to another backup system. (USB & eSATA interfaces not tested).

Cons: As everyone says, cables too short

Other Thoughts: If all you want is USB 2 interface, there are alternative external drives from newegg at similar prices with higher capacity and smaller footprint.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as intended.

Pros: Looks amazing. The light is just right. Glossy. Easy to install.

Cons: My computer a bit choppy while copying to the drive, not sure what's causing it. I have a fairly beefy machine (Vista 64 4gigs 2xGTX E6600, so it shouldn't be that.)

Other Thoughts: Newegg is great.

4 out of 5 eggsVery satisfied

Pros: I've accidentally left this on for several hours while I've gone to classes and work, come back and it's barely warm. Good cooling.
Never had a problem recognizing with my laptop, did a quick reformat as soon as I plugged it in and it was good to go.
Unlike some other drives, there's a power switch, and there's no sleep mode. It's ready for you anytime you are.
Doesn't cause any slowdown by being on and plugged in while my laptop's rebooting.

Cons: First one I received had a shot power cable. Plugged it in, heard a distinct *pop* as it blew, and no power. Easily returned to the manufacturer and replaced though, no trouble at all.
A bit of vibration but it's pretty negligible, I'm not a stickler about these things unless it's very audible.
The usb cable is terribly short. I wanted to put the drive on the shelf above my computer but instead had to finagle it into the limited space on my desk.

Other Thoughts: I believe it had backup software and possibly encryption software but honestly I just deleted it since I don't use it. So I can't remark on whether they were any good or just trials, etcetera.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: This drive is a real bargain when taken into consideration its size and variety of interfaces. I've had two of these drives and neither ones have given me problems during operation (see other thoughts below). The drive is quiet, cheap, and reliable.

Cons: The cables supplied by Lacie drives seem to shrink with each newer model, these are useless for anything more than daisy-chaining or to put next to your laptop. The plastic case looks nice, but is not durable if you're concerned with its appearance, however I've yet to have a crack or break in the case.

Other Thoughts: I purchased two of these drives, one came DOA, which Lacie Tech Support took care of quickly and free. I typically try to stay away from Lacie (I find most of their drives overpriced and have had some very poor quality early models) but this drive, on the cheap, is a real winner.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

Pros: This drive is quite fast, works as I require it to for HD video editing. Firewire 400 works well.

Cons: Unfortunately suffers from shiny technology syndrome; that is it scratches and scuffs extremely easily. I try and take care of my electronics, but unfortunately after transporting it a few times the surface has already scratched. I would prefer a matte option.
