4 out of 5 eggsnice nas

Pros: good overall NAS.

Cons: The 160GB models does not have the webfile server option by default. Tech service said I had to upgrade to the 250GB or bigger model to get it.

Other Thoughts: I found the clock in the box would not update. When I called support they sent me the latest firmware update. 1.09. When I installed it I found the http file server installed. I can now just browse the box with a browswer and grab a file.

4 out of 5 eggsReliable & Easy to Set-Up

Pros: Was a breeze to set-up and has proven very reliable. Web-based administration makes tweaking very easy. Decent build quality. Very comprehensive PDF manual.

Cons: A little noisy. I attached some small rubber feet to the base and problem solved. Could not get the print-server to work in a PC/MAC mixed environment. Tech support was unable to resolve and of little help.

Other Thoughts: Overall, a very nice and very reliable NAS, for a very reasonable price. Newegg service was stellar, as usual. Would have given it 5 stars except for marginal tech support.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Easy to install; Easy to use; knowledgeable customer support staff

Cons: Does not support domain accounts in workgroup network

Other Thoughts: Other than lack of support for domain accounts (my work computer) in a workgroup environment (my home), this device works perfectly.

4 out of 5 eggsNot Bad!

Pros: Great network drive. It works and seems to be stable and remains pretty cool to the touch.

Cons: Size, Model Discontinued, Power Saving features don't work, Printer feature doesn't work correctly.

When trying to use a printer off it it added the printer fine but when using it from one of the computers on the network I find simpleshare had a incorrect print driver and I had to install the correct print driver on each machine anyways.

Other Thoughts: Wish the 160 GB version came with Firmware 1.10.

5 out of 5 eggsDiscontinued

Pros: Haven't bought this one from New Egg, but I find the simpletech device to be the most reliable of all the small home/print/file servers available.

Cons: This unit has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Support wasn't that great to begin with, and now it's even worse.

Other Thoughts: Linksys needs to build a unit like this that is actually reliable and works all the time. It's a relatively simple device and I don't understand why 99% of the units out there are so unreliable and of poor quality.

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice

Pros: Works just like it should, was surprisingly easy to setup. Did not take more than 10 minutes from opening the box to setting up shares. No fan means it runs warm but quiet.

Cons: Even after updating the firmware i'm having some minor problems with the power saving features through the management console. I doubt that a fix is coming so I'll just need to live with that

Other Thoughts: 160Gb is a bit on the small side but if it's just for backup then this should suite you well.

5 out of 5 eggsSimpletech is Simple Tech

Pros: One of the easiest nas I've ever setup. Browsable from the cd and just click your way through the menus till you have it just how you like it. You can make it as secure as you want or just leave it open to the whole family. I've set mine up to allow the family to read from the media(music, pics, video) share and read write to the general use share.

Cons: Get's a bit pricey for the higher storage. Does not have gigabit.

Other Thoughts: I've used the nfs function of this device to move data from my old simpletech to the new one that I dropped a 500gb drive in. Works great with windows and unix. The best part is I connected a 500gb usb drive to it and now I've got raid. How cool is that?

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Device!

Pros: This is a great item. I bought this from NewEgg after returning several other DIY units. None of those compare to this unit. The unit is Great! The web interface is cool, the drive is literally silent, and best of all, it actually works compared to others. I like the fact that I can attach other USB drives and mirror, stripe, and encrypt my data. You cannot go wrong with this unit.

Cons: I can't think of any at the moment. It does everything I need it to.

Other Thoughts: For the $79 price + free shipping I paid, I may order another one. I wish I would have ordered the 500GB, but this one works great. Another thought, don't let the photos fool you. Unlike some major brands, this entire case is aluminum to help cool the unit since there is no fan, which helps keep it quiet. I will say I was not sure of SimpleTech at first, but I have definately changed my mind. Thanks NewEgg!

5 out of 5 eggsNice little device

Pros: Quiet, simple (truth in advertising), plays well with both Macs and PCs, expandable. Provides both a wizard and a highly capable advanced interface Great price, pretty much the same as a comparably sized bare drive.

Cons: The warranty on the 160GB model is significantly less than the 250GB model. Go big!

Other Thoughts: Contrary to what I read somewhere (maybe here in another review) , you can connect a generic USB drive and have the SimpleShare "claim" it as its own. You don't need two SimpleShare devices. This is one of the first devices I've bought where I didn't have to hack it to enable features I needed. There's stuff this can do that I don't see myself needing (looks like unixy stuff). Given that -- I feel comfortable recommending it to my parents, because of the wizard and its general plugnplayability.

3 out of 5 eggsGood price for the functionality

Pros: Also a print server and the hard drive capacity can be expanded. If you aren't running a firewall, and your system isn't highly customized and tweaked, then the installation of the device should be quick and simple. The web interface of it is simple to use, although it seems to lack some organization.

Cons: A full format time of 11 hours! (A quick format of 10 seconds or so). Frozen my computer twice, one time while transferring several gigs. Didn't map my network drive while my firewall was up. Tech support is only open for a little over 12 hours a day, and even then I waited 20 minutes to be answered.

Other Thoughts: Good price for the functionality.
