5 out of 5 eggsFlawless in both RAID0 and RAID1

Pros: I've had this drive since 2008/2009 (I honestly can't remember how long I won this as a contest prize) and I've had zero issues to date. Works at 120-150MB/sec in RAID0, and 80 in RAID1. I'm not sure why the other reviewers have had such a terrible experience but over 10 units failed in a row is pretty extreme and doesn't sound like its just a quality control issue with Lacie.

Cons: Heavy

Other Thoughts: Other brands of HDD can be used in this enclosure so putting in better quality drives might be something one would want to do (Caviar black, etc)

3 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with Dell Inspiron 9300

Pros: Nice metal case, reasonably quiet, USB performance is good, really like the Raid 1 mirroring feature - the chief reason for being my choice.

Cons: Price, large blue light/switch is intrusively bright - as if someone is trying to make a fashion statement, this drive cannot be used with a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP Pro - the chief reason for my choice.

The problem is that Windows XP Pro on this 5 year old computer does not associate a driver for for this disk, but instead leaves it as a disk thing of type "2big quadra" - but without a driver associated with it.

Note that this drive /does/ works fine with a recently purchased Eee S101 netbook running XP Home, and /does/ work fine with a 7 year old Dell Inspiron 8200 running XP Pro.

Other Thoughts: Talked with Lacie re: this, and the tech offered to RMA the drive. I declined, thinking that I had somehow done something wrong when I had freshly reinstalled the OS onto a new 32GB SSD, and there was a strangely named USB device that would not get defined even after I DL all drivers from the Dell support website. The 32GB SSD proved to be too small to be practically useful, so I ordered a large conventional HD, freshly installed XP Pro, but this time installed the Dell specific chipset drivers instead of getting them through Windows Update, and this time the strange undefined USB device did not appear. But this drive is still unusable by the Inspiron 9300 notebook computer. The remaining cause I can think of is a Bios incompatibility in the notebook for this device.

1 out of 5 eggsStay away from Lacie

Pros: These drives are convenient and for a while work good. The ones I've used have been quiet generally.

Cons: They don't last. 6 months, a year (if you're luck) and you'll be calling to get a replacement because of a drive failure, power switch problems, or the internal power supply goes bad. Their replacements are refurbished models which you'll be lucky to get even 6 months out of in my experience.

Other Thoughts: I bought 4 LaCie external drives (1TB+) over a 4 month period to use as system backups. About 6 months after the 1st purchase, they started going bad. LaCie's tech support ranged from ambivalent to unfriendly and they certainly didn't try to take care of the problem. At first they insisted it was my computer hardware, then after a 2nd unit failed tried to say I had power line problems (though I've never had problems with any other manufacturer's equipment, go figure).

Every one of the original 4 units went bad within a year (at this time they only had 1 year warranties, btw). Every one of the replacement units went bad within 8 months, but by that time was out of the original warranty period.

My advice would be to go with a different, and usually less expensive brand.

2 out of 5 eggsUnhappy

Pros: Nice case, seems to be a good quality produce. Several modes of operation

Cons: 1st I made the mistake to think that this drive was a 1TB drive when using RAID 1. I kept reading the description stating a 1 TB drive assuming that each drive was 1 TB however once I selected the mode and formatted the drive I realized my mistake, the description of the product doesn't make that very clear. Secondly, in RAID 1 this drive is very, Very, VERY slow.
