1 out of 5 eggsTERRIBLE DO NOT BUY THIS

Pros: None

Cons: Everything. Let's see, first the price, for the piece of cr a p you get is too expensive! The worst thing is that IT FAILS! the worst worst thing is that even if you follow perfectly the instructions on how to keep it safe and sound, no matter what, will stop working. Ours stop working after 2 years. Conveniently just bit before the warranty expired. Now, can you imagine the amount of data there in 2 years. You would like to recover it right? Well, you have to give other 900€ so you get it back (IF)!!
Is a round business for Lacie cause they say that if you dont send it to those they tell you, warranty is not valid anymore! and you cant open it yourself because warranty wont be valid anymore. Cheaters.

Other Thoughts: Do not buy do not buy Do not buy do not buy Do not buy do not buy Do not buy do not buy Do not buy do not buy Do not buy do not buy Do not buy do not buy

1 out of 5 eggsWARNING Corrupts large files

Pros: Reasonable price

Cons: WARNING!!! This device corrupts large data files (seems like greater than 3-4GB). I have the 2TB version and have been in contact with LaCie support for more than 2 months, and still no solution. After many firmware upgrades, the device has gone from corrupting every large file to only corrupting about 30% of them. Don't know which is worse.

Other Thoughts: Customer support initially tried to be helpful, but the last two responses were "I would like you to know that I am following up currently with the R&D department and I am still awaiting their response about the next course of action to take, and it should be resolved soon." When you are in the business of storage, I would think data corruption issues would be dealt with extremely urgently.

2 out of 5 eggsOverheated in 10 days

Pros: hen unit overheated and is being returned, but good, knowledgeable technical support. Answered promptly.

Cons: Within 10 days, the unit overheated, malfunctioned and is being return. Might be a structural flaw since no fan. Told to keep on a hard flat surface...it was.

2 out of 5 eggsNot plug and play

Pros: Does some of the things it claims to do. Got it to talk easily with my PS3 and play videos and music.

Cons: Didn't set up so easily. Documentation that came with it was no help. Had to call LaCie to get them to help me reset it to factory settings since it did not work right at first.

If your buying this to use with iTunes like I did, be prepared for disappointment. They claim it's plug and play, but I haven't been able to get it to work on my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and iTunes 10, or on my older iMac G5 running Tiger and iTunes 9. LaCie support had no help for me. They figure it must be a problem in iTunes, but how can that be when it doesn't work on 2 different computers running 2 different versions of iTunes. Also, I haven't customized my iTunes at all, so if it's supposed to be plug and play, then why won't my standard installs of iTunes 9 or 10 access the shared library. Googling the problem shows that there are a lot of people with this issue. I believe the problem to be with their firmware having issues and they have no idea how to fix it.

Other Thoughts: They claim full plug and play support with iTunes, but then tell me it must be a problem in iTunes that keeps me from accessing it. If Apple has done something in an update to break support for the device, then they need drop the full iTunes support from their list of features or be honest and say that they are aware of the issue and are working on a solution rather than just tell me it must be my iTunes so tough luck. I'm sure it has worked for some people, but there are enough people that it hasn't worked for that I would not recommend this product to anyone.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Unit came battered and was very difficult to install. Eventually after a few hours, just quit working all together. Unit light was knocked out of position. Packing material sticks to drive casing. Gets dirty very easily. Stay away from this one.

Other Thoughts: Sending in the RMA now.
