1 out of 5 eggsPretty on the outside, but...

Pros: Box design is gorgeous. Sleek, and very cool aesthetic.

Cons: The way the cord connects to the drive is awkward, and the insides are, well... garbage. Total failure twice.

Other Thoughts: Thankfully I didn't have any original files on here, and the only thing lost was the time to return it twice. Complete garbage, and I'll never get sucked in to the LaCie style over function again.

1 out of 5 eggsI wouldn't suggest buying this

Pros: Simple, sleek looking case,
USB 3.0 support,
Doesn't need power.

Cons: I never understand why my client buy LaCie drives, other than that they *look* good from the outside. But on the inside, it's a different story. The real problem lies with their controllers. They tend to fail before the drive does. However, in this model, the controller prevents you from properly formatting the drive the way YOU want. Forget about this drive if you plan to connect it to a NAS device or any device running a U*ix-flavored operating system.

The drive comes with two partitions, one for the LaCie apps and the other for your space, formatted with FAT32. If you want a different layout or format, you inevitably will have problems both under windows, but absolutely under Linux. Pull the drive and format it on another controller, or direct SATA and no problems, but when you put it back on the LaCie controller, you lose access to the drive.

Other Thoughts: Internal disk is Seagate, ST1000LM024. It's AF, so you need to make sure if you re-partition it, you properly account for the 4K sectors to align the partitions properly. Drive is made in China!

5 out of 5 eggsreal SATA inside!

Pros: real SATA drive inside!

Cons: This is a spinning media drive. If you drop it your data is probably gone.

Other Thoughts: I opened the case of this thing and found a Samsung ST1000LM024 SATA2 drive.

That is good news because if the USB connector gets damaged you can still retrieve your data using a regular SATA connection.

Some similar drives come with the USB port directly on the hard drive. With that, you loose everything if the tiny USB connection gets damaged.

4 out of 5 eggsa handsome small external drive

Pros: - small
- handsome
- USB powered
- short cable
- works well with USB 2.0 or USB 3.0

Cons: I have not opened the case yet to determine if this is a native USB drive or a SATA drive with an adapter kit. It is much better if it is a SATA drive because if the connector breaks I can pull out the drive and rescue the data with a regular SATA connection.

5 out of 5 eggsquite excellent...

Pros: I spent an hour browsing the Newegg site last fall to find the physically smallest external drive with the largest capacity and which also supported USB3; this item met the standard, and defeated all others according to this criterion.

Cons: For whatever nonsensical reason, this item is no longer available and has supposedly been "deactivated" on the Newegg site. I do not understand this.

Other Thoughts: I recently made the mistake of ordering much lower end Lacie 1TB drives, thinking they were what I had ordered last fall. The low end aspect of the drives I recently ordered consists of the drives being physically much larger, which is no doubt a low end attribute. I intend to send these back, and am disappointed that the top of the line product I had identified last fall is no longer available on Newegg. Either I will try to locate this item elsewhere, or I may need to waste another hour of my time browsing the Newegg site to find the smallest external drive with the highest capacity which is also USB3 capable.
