5 out of 5 eggsLaCie d2 Quadra 2 TB Ext HDD

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: Sturdy HDD in heavy metal case covered with cooling fins. The USB 3.0 is faster even that eSata or Firewire 800. Large capacity drive comes with USB 3.0, eSATA, Firewire drivers. Has separate power supply not dependent on computer.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: The drive comes with two partitions, one is loaded with a program to load drivers but it won't run under x64 programs. load the drivers then repartition drives to allow full use for backup.

1 out of 5 eggsdead i n less than two weeks

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: good pricing.

Cons: died in normal service in about two weeks time.

Other Thoughts: I've noticed over the past two or so years that LaCie products are either rock solid, or fail early. I have drives that have soldiered on for three years without issue, and others that fail right away. I've also noticed that it is frequently the power brick that fails.

5 out of 5 eggsLaCie d2 Quadra 2 TB Ext HDD

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: Built like a tank...case is heavy guage metal that acts as excellent heat sink. Has Firewire 400/800, eSata, and USB 3 ports on back. Also separate power supply and on-off switch. It is very fast using USB 3.0, and ranks up there with the SSD and the Velociraptor HD in my machine in throughput. Also, has a tiny switch on lower back that allows disk to be locked (could be useful in office environment).

Cons: No drivers included. Have to find and download USB 3.0 drivers, but once done and installed, HD works very well.

Other Thoughts: I expect this Ext HD to last, and I don't see any way to damage it.

5 out of 5 eggsNot a bad experience

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: Sturdy case design, very fast, wide variety of ports without needs for special connectors (like the Seagate drives), spins down without OS help

Cons: Previous model had a whining fan after 3 years, no problems with this replacement so far

Other Thoughts: Contrary to many experiences here, I had a LaCie 2TB drive for about 3 years without any problems. It started to make a sharp, high pitch whine, almost like metal touching metal. I thought maybe the drive was going to fail, and by briefly sticking a paperclip into the fan, I was able to confirm that it wasn't just fan noise. Two emails to LaCie and they shipped a brand new 2TB drive to me without charge, even though I was out of warranty. All they wanted was the previous drive back for investigation. My experience obviously differs greatly from others... back your data, regardless of what drive you use. then back up. and back up.

1 out of 5 eggsdied after using less than 50 times

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: Cool design.

Cons: Not made to last any decent length of time.

Other Thoughts: I bought this drive, using both USB and eSata on both of my laptops, to store music and HD family videos. Only plugged it into the computer when I was going to back up data, keeping it stored in its original box. Used it maybe 40 times, and now when I plug it into either system the computer locks up. Does this on 3 different systems. Lacie's name used to mean professional quality, now it just means 'foreign junk'.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: This drive is a real workhorse. Worked flawlessly out of the box. The build quality is great. Don't have USB 3.0 on my computer, so no comments here, but Firewire is fast. I currently own two of them. I use them for video editing, and so far they've been doing a great job.

Cons: It's pretty heavy, which makes it slightly difficult if I want to work in a cafe or something.

Other Thoughts: All in all, I'm very happy with this drive and can easily recommend it to anyone who needs a powerful external drive.

1 out of 5 eggsLaCie 2TB Quadra esata

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: none

Cons: defective from the beginning. warranty is useless when all of your data is at risk. They kindly referred me to a data recovery company for over $1000.
Seems it is super sensitive to power supple cords and any type of movement. They really have no customer support - just a few email responses that were unhelpful.

1 out of 5 eggsLaCie products = avoid like the plague.

This review is from: LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB USB 3.0 / 2 x Firewire800 / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive 301543U Silver

Pros: Drive works ok when it's working. The drive worked fine for me for over a year as a Time Machine backup for my wife's imac.

Cons: When the drive dies, you'll find out just how bad LaCie support is. After 28 days they of back and forth (for a product that's supposed to be covered under warranty) they told me I can't open the drive to wipe the data because the hard drive shell stopped functioning.

Other Thoughts: LaCie warranties / support are terrible. It's pretty sad since the product itself works fine. Just don't expect a level of support that Western Digital or other hard drive manufacturers will give you. LaCie support makes Dell support seem godly in comparison.
