This review is from: LaCie 2big Quadra 4TB USB 3.0 / 2 x FireWire 800 3.5" External Hard Drive 9000316
Pros: Simple to use, full metal, seamless raid allows me to plug it in to any system. Super fast USB 3 and FW 800. Feels really well built.
Cons: Obnoxiously bright LEDs everywhere on this thing.
The Lacie Desktop Manager (the software for this thing) is completely worthless. It does not display much of anything, or anything in a technical manor at all. It is buggy and likes to not remember settings no matter how many times they are applied. Really have to fight with the software to get it to remember anything (up until the next reboot anyhow). I am also so unsure of the software that I am not sure if I want to trust what it displays.
As for the hardware, did I mention that there are obnoxiously bright LEDs everywhere on this thing? You know the LED that your Maglite spotlight flashlight uses? This thing has 4 of them. Enough to light up a football stadium at night. The software allows for the shutting off of one of the LEDs, but hey, the software likes ignoring settings that I apply in it so what use is that.
The first unit that I bought sat boxed for one month until I had my new iMac shipped in. I then setup the unit in a RAID-1 and it worked fast and flawless for exactly 2 weeks. After that it started rebuilding the RAID every 3 days like clock work. Because I had let it sit for over a month, it was out of the Newegg exchange policy. So I had to use the Lacie warranty. Lacie did every trick in the book to try their best to not cover me. The support kept having me try simple things such as rebuilding the RAID, trying a new power brick, charging me to ship me new HDDs for teh bays, pressing buttons, etc.
Eventually after all the hoops they made me hop through failed, they then charged me shipping to ship my whole device back in to be refurb'd. After receiving it back from Lacie, certified as working, exactly 3 days later, like clockwork, the raid failed and rebuilt exactly as it did when I sent it in. They did not do jack to fix it. So I went back to the support ticket and mentioned this, and they tried to offer excuses about bad power bricks and other hoops that I had to hop through. I had had enough. I told the support that I had spent MONTHS hoping through their hoops/running the clock and nothing has worked. I told them that clearly I was at the point of needing to receive a replacement product for the lemon that they sold me. After laying down the law, they did ship me a whole new, unused, unit.
Thus far the new unit had been working great for these 2 months that I have had it.
Other Thoughts: PC used with Lacie HDD: iMac late 2012, Mac OS 10.8.4
I really wish that the Lacie Desktop Manager software was like the software that most RAID cards shipped with. The very poor quality of the software is holding back a good product.
Also I do not think that the drives used in this thing are rated as Enterprise quality drives? For the price of this thing, they should be. Correct me if I am wrong. They are good drives though regardless.
