Access your files from anywhere with D-Link's internet accessible network storage enclosure. The DNS-323 has a built in FTP server so you can log in anywhere you have an internet connection. Since it connects to your network with a Gigabit Ethernet connection you know your local network won't be the cause of slow data transfers.
Internally the enclosure has space for two 3.5" SATA hard drives of any currently available capacity. You can configure the drives for speed or data security. Standard mode allows you to access the drives individually while JBOD adds their capacity together linearly. RAID 0 stripes the drives together for maximum performance. For maximum protection RAID 1 mirrors the drives so you have two copies of the data.
The UPnP AV media server streams data to any connected media devices or computers. That way all the media is stored in one place and you don't have to worry about copying the files to each system. There is also a print server so you can share one non-networked among all the users on the network without having to set up print sharing.

It formats the wrong HDD
- Pros: None
- Cons: I have the newest official firmware ver. 1.03.
I installed a Hitachi 400GB in this DNS-323 with 250GB data. Last night I inserted another Seagate 300GB HDD into it. After that the web interface won't let me enter the configuration page unless I allow it to format the "New HDD", it doesn't provide any information (brand, model, s/n, etc) about the HDD that is going to be formatted. After the format and reboot, I found that it actually formatted the Hitachi HDD instead of the new installed Seagate, and I lost 250GB of Lecture notes/videos, family videos/picture.
There is a FAQ on D-Link's website which says that it appears that the DNS formats the wrong HDD, but in fact it is simply because the old HDD is mounted as a different volume. Well, this FAQ is very misleading. In my case, the DNS DOES FORMATTED THE WRONG HDD BECAUSE OF THE BUG IN IT'S FIRMWARE. I tried to plug the Hitachi onto a Linux machine and confirmed it was physically formatted, so whatever the FAQ says IS NOT TRUE!
- Other Thoughts: Back up your data and don't trust the DNS. The firmware asks you to format your disk without any information of which HDD is going to be formatted, and would not allow you to do anything unless you allow it to format. AND IT FORMAT THE WRONG DISK.
I can't think of any software/firmware else that is so poor written after 3 revision.
I lost 250GB data!!
Don't get the combo
- Pros: Arrived fast
- Cons: I purchased the COMBO assuming the hard drive was matched for the NAS. I will have to take partual blame for not looking at the Hard drive specs. I have in front of me a D-Link NAS that supports 2 SATA drives and 2 Maxtor ATA drives that won't connect
- Other Thoughts: When your sales department get a brain storm in selling a combo, why don't they show it to the technical dept before customers get irate

ZIPPO - Advance and novice alike
- Pros: For advance users if you are the tinkering type. Running
Linux LINK8890 2.6.30-2-orion5x #1 Sat Nov 7 00:42:42 UTC 2009 armv5tel GNU/Linux.
- Cons: The fan should be a little stronger and quieter.
- Other Thoughts: Just OK for novice who just want to have a raid capable storage.
Very Nice.
- Pros: Used the fun_plug extension to turn on SSH access. Installed my own bittorrent client (transmission), as the one that comes with it has some problems.
2x 1.5 TB drives in Raid 0. No Problems so far.
- Cons: The out-of-box group management is klunky, but works.
- Other Thoughts: The ability to put your own software on this box due to the root SSH access makes this one of the most useful devices i have. I dont have to rely on firmware updates to fix problems, i can just install the open source software that i like and disable the out of box stuff. This capability alone is enough to give it a 5 egg rating.
so far so good
- Pros: easily connecting..still working on networking printer setup
- Cons: none as of yet
