Access your files from anywhere with D-Link's internet accessible network storage enclosure. The DNS-321 has a built in FTP server so you can log in anywhere you have an internet connection. Since it connects to your network with a Gigabit Ethernet connection you know your local network won't be the cause of slow data transfers.
Internally the enclosure has space for two 3.5" SATA hard drives of any currently available capacity. You can configure the drives for speed or data security. Standard mode allows you to access the drives individually while JBOD adds their capacity together linearly. RAID 0 stripes the drives together for maximum performance. For maximum protection RAID 1 mirrors the drives so you have two copies of the data.
The UPnP AV media server streams data to any connected media devices or computers. That way all the media is stored in one place and you don't have to worry about copying the files to each system. The D-Link Network Storage is a perfect way to store, share and safeguard all your files, do not miss it!

Working as advertised
- Pros: I have two DNS-321 units each with two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB drives config'd as RAID1. I'm using them as 'Backup-to-disk folders' in Backup Exec, rotating one of them off-site each week.
Physicall installation was very simple and the LAN setup required going through a straightforward html based wizard which took about five minutes.
There are other features (ftp hosting, iTunes, quotas, user permissions, etc.) that I'm not using, but as a RAID1 redundant external hard drive I'm plased.
- Cons: The Seagate drives I'm using are listed on the D-Link website as being recommended, but they are slimmer than the drive bays in the DNS-321. I used a piece of the packing foam to keep the drives from rattling around in the enclosure. Not that big of a deal, but a spring or clip of some sort provided by d-link would be better than my foam hack-job.
Regret Buying
- Pros: ROM embedded Linux kernel & Web-based management GUI extremely limited. However, you can find Linux plug-in for Telnet, SSH, NFS, etc.
Lacks a secure method to access files from the Internet. Hard to believe that D-Link still recommends the unsecure/cleartext FTP in this modern age!!!!
- Cons: WARNING! Loses Samba (SMB/CIFS) network shares, although no files are lost. They'll need to constantly be recreated or reloaded. Search D-Link forums for "DNS-321 lose network shares".
Also, it creates a share for every directory/folder you set permissions for since the filesystem is Linux EXT2 not NTFS.
Will not allow you to set file permission as Read-only (from Windows) even though Linux supports an RO attribute. However, you can use Fun Plug to Telnet into the box and set permission to RO using archaic command-line.
D-Link won't admit to bugs, shortfalls nor willing to enhance firmware to make it useful.
- Other Thoughts: I bought this unit due to the 1000 MBps network interface, SMB compatibility (to allow local LAN access from Windows), Internet access to my files, RAID (in case of HDD failure) and the fact that the OS is in flash (in case of HW failure, I don't have to "reinstall" Windows & all the it's patches).
A better solution is to use an old PC, install a RAID card, install Windows XP, create shares and access the PC locally via Windows native SMB or even remotely (after setting up a VPN to your network). And for Linux users, you can use Microsofts FREE Windows Unix tools.
May be selling this unit online if I can't get it to work as intended.

Good intentions
- Pros: Price, reliability of logging in to the system. Torrent option in the web GUI is awesome!
- Cons: Not fast at all! The processor is extremely slow, D-link really messed up with how it handles the GUI. There is about 200GB of used space from a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HD and to search it, pretty much takes forever. Not sure what D-Link was thinking when they designed it, the fan is pointless to have when the front cover is on, there are no air holes in the front to let air move around the hard drives. The fan just spins and spins and spins....thats it! To get the fan to turn off, you have to open the front door and let air through...pointless!!!!
It says gigabyte and I believe them, but I have a gigabyte router, and desktop network card, but not getting more than 8MB/sec...and I checked that I have cat5e cabling.
- Other Thoughts: D-link...go back to the drawing board quickly!!!
Works well but transfer rate is low
- Pros: It's fairly easy to set up. The device is nice and simple, just drop two SATA drives in and go! It's quiet. It looks good. It has RAID capabilities.
- Cons: The transfer rate is slow. In my tests, it was getting about 123 mbps across my gigabit network. My fastest computer can do about 422 mbps. It turned out to be too slow for playing hi bitrate video across the network.
- Other Thoughts: I returned the device and am now using a computer as my file server. For someone who doesn't care much about transfer rate, or needs it just for backup or something, I think it would work fine.
Good Value
- Pros: Got this NAS enclosure on sale, and it has performed up to par with what I expected. Stuck some 1TB 5900 rpm barracudas in a RAID 0 setup. Easy to setup and a clean interface.
- Cons: It's a little slow on initial read but its really only b/c of the Hard Drive Hibernation feature, so you may want to disable it.
