1 out of 5 eggsLost all my data

Pros: None

Cons: Configured as RAID 5 with 3 1 T drives. After one failed I am not able to rebuild the Volume. The devise starts to rebuild the volume but when it claims that it is done, no data is showing. Lost 400 GB of pictures and lots of important data. Extremely upset.
DO NOT BUY UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR DATA.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy Seagate HDD. They fail after 2 months...

5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

Pros: I've used several NAS devices and have had the least aggrevation with this unit. Very useful for large backups. Works fine with 3tb drives.

Cons: Can get hot at times. Will run a bit slower than some NAS devices but not a big deal unless you're routinely moving large amount of data.

4 out of 5 eggsMore like 250.00

Pros: Easy to use , will take any size hhd, easy to config, nice color blends well, like the LCD info screen , does what it is advertised to do.

Cons: When adding a new hhd depending on the config, you'll have to reformat one or most of the drives. now & then the gate logs show fans fail.

Other Thoughts: A little pricey.

5 out of 5 eggsStill Excellent

Pros: I have had this device for over two years and have not experienced any of the problems that some of the users seem to be having. There are no problems with overheating (filling volumes with 1TB truecrypt containers).

It is a great NAS from my perspective and would buy again.

Cons: I don't like that the OLED flashes "drive full" when one of the hard drives is 95% full. I would like to be able to turn that off to avoid the annoying flash.

Other Thoughts: I am posting this update to my original post to provide some insight into long term ownership of this device.

1 out of 5 eggsAvoid

Pros: Cute OLED front panel.

Cons: - runs hot
- locks up because it runs hot
- pathetic tech support
- mediocre file sharing
- poor additional applications

Other Thoughts: I've owned one for 6 months. The first one was DOA (would not boot properly). The second has been OK - nothing special - until a week ago when it started locking up. I ended up putting it outside in sub 0C weather to finish backing it up. 3 long sessions with 100% scripted tech support (punctuated by multiple dropped calls) yielded no satisfaction whatsoever. I'd avoid this piece of... hardware if I were you.

4 out of 5 eggsCooling Idea

Pros: Inexpensive, works ok.

Cons: Cooling- runs hot

Other Thoughts: Here's what I do to have the unit run cooler. Take the front cover off, all it really does is block airflow, and have a small fan blow into it. I use a smal Vornado fan. Now the temp seldom goes above 100, most of the time it's at 90-95.

1 out of 5 eggsIt is a nice looking brick

Pros: It's an attractive unit.

Cons: I bought this from New Egg on June 1st. It started acting strange a few weeks ago. Now it responds to D-Link's easy search utility but that's all. The unit will not permit logging onto the management console nor access the drives. I squandered $300 on this brick.

3 out of 5 eggsDefective Product

Pros: Cheap and effective storage. Looks sharp. Great product on paper (uh, online specifications).

Cons: Have to deal with constantly powercycling the unit for it to work.

The product seems to be flawed. I got my first unit 9 months ago, and it worked great for a while. But it started falling off the network occasionally, then it started happening more and more. The unit was still running, but wasn't online. No response to ping, no file shares and no web interface. Eventually it got to the point where it went "offline" every night.

I had to ship it back to DLink, who sent me a replacement unit. That worked fine for a few months, then it did the same thing. I found it offline one day, then it happened again 2 weeks later, then a week later, then 3 days, now it's back to going offline every night. I'm sure getting a new unit will solve the problem again, but for how long?

And do I really want to keep investing all this time and energy into this product every 4 months? I use this for corporate backups. I guess I get what I paid for. Next time I'll upgrade from DLink.

Other Thoughts: Maybe DLink cares enough to investigate the problem and release a firmware update to address the problem? It could be fixed I suppose.

Yeah, come to think of it, I'm just gonna hold my breath until they do.

3 out of 5 eggsIt's a NAS drive--not a server

Pros: Compact form factor. Faster speeds than the DNS-323. I have owned my DNS-343 along with four DNS-323's for over two years, all loaded with 1 TB WD Caviar Green 16 MB cache drives. Speed averages 21.17 MB/sec read and 18.65 MB/sec write (169.37 Mbps read and 149.23 Mbps write), which is about 27% faster than the 323's.

Cons: I hear the fan kick in much more frequently than I do on my DNS-323's, though the temperature readings are consistent. Idle temp is around 104 degrees and it heats up to 114 degrees under heavy load.

Although I've been online for 2 years, I question this unit's long-term reliability. Perhaps four times total I've discovered the fan spinning full throttle and the whole unit is unresponsive. Can't even power off. Unplug it, let it sit a minute, plug it back in and it works fine for 6 more months like nothing ever happened. Got me.

I love the 323's and feel comfortable that they'll last for many years to come, but I don't get the same warm and fuzzy about this one. Maybe it's the proximity of the drives so close together and the natural heat that must result. Not sure.

I like this product but it just makes me nervous.

Other Thoughts: Advertised "fancy" features, including AD support, generally do not work. It's a good "dumb box".

Business users needing AD support seriously should not consider any NAS drive. For the price you pay for the "Pro" models that actually meet business user needs you could just build a Windows Server 2003-based file server and set up regular AD shares.

I've also owned Netgear, they're no better.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Choice

Pros: Capacity. I have four of the 2TB Hitachi drives in a RAID 5 array which formats out to about 5.36TB of usable space. Quiet for me, but I do not hear very well. Front indicator panel is easy to read. Gigabit LAN support. USB printer support. Formats an 8TB RAID 5 array fairly quickly. Easy to add and replace drives. Good variety of RAID options.

Cons: Write speeds are little slow with RAID 5. Web interface is a little bit difficult to navigate. Steep price.

Other Thoughts: Download new firmware before adding drives.

Drive temps on wake up range from 95F to 100F.

Can easily be hidden in a data closet or under a desk on a small UPS in order to keep important data backed up and out of sight.
