The advanced TeraStation Pro II from Buffalo is a combination NAS appliance and multimedia server. The four 500GB SATA hard drives can be set up in RAID levels 0, 1, 5, or 10. It’s certified by the Digital Living Network alliance for interoperability to stream media throughout your home.

This compact unit is designed for SOHO or workgroup environments. It supports MS Active Directory and DFS. The back panel has an RS-232 port for remote monitoring and control. There are also 2 USB 2.0 ports for additional storage.

The included Memeo AutoBackup software makes data security easy. Smart-Picks let you select individual files or file types across directories or in specific folders to back up. 4 out of 5 eggsReview

Pros: I run a small office. I have two of these things. One is on site acting as a back up for the machines and a file server for the client data and application databases. The other is off site acting as an off site backup. Overall it works fine for this and performs well. We have 5 users in the office and 2 remote.

Cons: I did have an issue with the remote backup passing the local ip to the file server messing up the built in web interface backup, so I was unable to just forward a port in the router to get to the terastation for a backup job. This is a pain and difficult to work around for most people. It would be great if I could just type the domain name or wan ip.

I had an issue with user permissions that can not be changed without gaining root access. (one of our mac users machines umask I assume didn't try to fix it, I just chown the directory)

Other Thoughts: The two units I have turned out to be a very cheap and easy way to set up this particular office.

4 out of 5 eggsSO far so good

Pros: I have had zero problems with the units we own. We have one at the office and one at my home. The offsite unit is set up to mirror the in office unit. I would consider buyig another if I needed a new NAS.

Cons: Had to get root access to the box because the file permissions from a mac laptop were messing up the shares. I think this had more to do with the users umask and not the unit its self.

4 out of 5 eggsno problems

Pros: Have several used as network backups at different locations on different servers and one being used to store a database for an application being used remotely. Have had no problems with reading or writing, installation or configuring at all. But did not use any software that came with it.

Cons: the rubber pads on the feet come off easy and get stuck to other things.

1 out of 5 eggsO Dear Gxd Don't!!!!

Pros: there's a pro?

Cons: In my shop this a part of a bigger set of systems and unfortunately I cant just get us to buy a new one. So I am stuck with it. At least 1 hard drive crashes once a month and needs to be copied from the other hd in the RAID. It continually has problems with passwords and though once you in the admin is relatively easy, you will almost always have a problem getting into the administration program. It will randomly just disconnect itself from the network for no reason. If you are moving it or need to take a hard drive out, be ungodly careful those are the most fragile hard drives i have ever touch. I think you could drop a glass from the counter and have a better chance of it not breaking than these hard drives, than these HD's not losing all their data.

Other Thoughts: I would say you get what you pay for... but you dont.

I know the hard drive issues could easily be blaimed on me just being rough on them, but i work with and interchange hard drives all day long i have other server hd's, externals and such that have been dropped and have no problems. These i think lose data from being breathed on.

Manufacturer Response:

Pap, I am sorry that you are having problems with your unit. I can assure you that we only build our units with quality, tier 1 manufacture, A grade drives. These are name brand drives like WD, Seagate, and Hitachi. Please contact me so we can discuss in detail the issues you are having and see if there is a reason why you are having repeat failures. This machine has a 3 year warranty, which includes the hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggsGood for Linux, not so much for Windows and AD

Pros: Cheap, 1 GB.

Cons: Accessed share and was unable to write.Logged in as local admin with no luck either. I finally removed access restrictions and still no go! Yikes! A Firmware upgrade did not resolve the issue.
Administrator pwds cannot contain special characters(SAMBA??)
AD integration is a joke-I had to create a domain admin with a pwd that has no special characters!!!
Buying a Windows NAS and scavenging hard drives from this piece of Cf#$%p-stay away!!!

Other Thoughts: Yeah, run forest, run forest!! Use a windows server as a file server or LInux, but keep away from the Buffalo!!!!
