Buffalo's 1TB LinkStation Pro Duo is pre-loaded with dual 500GB drives so you don't have to worry about installation. Just plug it in and configure. The LinkStation supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 so you get your choice of speed and capacity or security. You can add additional storage by attaching a USB 2.0 hard drive.

Pros: Small and compact.

Cons: Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo runs on Linux OS which limits the max. path/filename length to 128 characters. This turns out to be a nightmare when copying tens of thousands of files with path structure intact from Windows XP/Vista (which allows for twice the path length). After 10 to 15 hours of trying to make it work, calling Buffalo Tech Support and countless errors generated from the copying to the Buffalo LinkStation Pro Duo I gave up and decided it would be best to return the product.

Pros: 1TB striped or 500GB mirrored. Very easy to setup, it came configured striped for maximum size, I switched to mirrored to protect my data. I only have a 10/100 network right now but performance has been good so far. It runs cool to the touch in my computer gear area, and after running it pretty hard it was barely warm.

Cons: Lacking a print server

Pros: None.

Cons: Product rarely is accessible from the network. Once configured, drive mappings frequently break and the device disappears from the network. Unable to use it as intended backup for 1tb terrastation (purchased earlier and only failed 1 time - covered by warranty) because it is so seldom available - via delivered client tools, web interface or unc paths. Too large a footprint to even make a decent paper weight. Don't even think of buying this.

Other Thoughts: Little to 0 support information available from Buffalo web site or customer service.

Manufacturer Response:KP, Please contact me to help resolve this issue. On the back of the Unit there is a Manual/Auto power switch that enables a power save mode. If you have multiple computers trying to access the drive then this needs to be set to Manual. Please contact me so we can discuss further.

Great solution

Pros: Easy set-up (home network), fairly quick response and nice web interface. I set it up as RAID 1 to ensure copies of my data, connected my printer to 1 of the USB ports and haven't had any problems accessing it from Windows or Linux (mounted via cifs). I even set it up to send emails if there's a problem (none so far). I haven't tried the remote access. This is superior to my Lacie drive. Overall, a great product. (And no, Buffalo did not give me anything to write this ;)

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I installed the software that came with it, but later uninstalled it. If you assign a static IP and mount it properly, their software isn't necessary.

Another failed NAS

Pros: GB nic, plug and play unit when it works

Cons: Had one give out after 2yrs of use (500gb non raid) and now after 2 months its replacement gives out too. Flashing power light and no way to access data.

Included software is a joke.

Other Thoughts: Buy one because of low cost and hope for the best... Buffalo is NOT making a good impression. I am looking for another brand with better reliability.

On hold for tech support call at 9am, 15min.
On hold for tech support call at 12pm over ONE Hr., tech said that by fed law they have to Destroy the drives.
