1 out of 5 eggsalmost a whole month

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: cheap.

Cons: mechanical failure after 27 days.

Other Thoughts: shame on me for not buying a whole RAID array, i guess. drives in 2k11 seem to be dying faster and faster.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive for Mac FW800 1394b

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: Quickness of 1394b
Silent

Cons: I didn't by it from Newegg

Other Thoughts: I haven't used the eStata port yet so no reviews on that. I have used USB on a limited basis with no issue.

Never had a mounting issue. It's fast, it's silent as my Mac Mini sans an occasional click (but that could be my other external). The drive has no lag when I'm recording music. I also use it for torrent upload/download 24/7 with the only bottleneck being my internet connection.

Don't hesitate to pull the trigger on this drive. I'm still very happy about it.

Cons: louder than i expected it to be.

5 out of 5 eggs10 Drives All Working Perfectly

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: Bought six of these for work. They've been great so I bought four more for home use. Excellent way to back stuff up (I use mine for video). Plenty of outputs for compatibility. Fast drives, run cool, no problems at all with any of them after several months of hard use.

Cons: My Mac wanted to format these as Windows drives by default. I had to go into options and choose the appropriate Mac setting to format. Also, all of my Macs have had intermittent external drive mounting problems with firewire. Not the fault of the drives since I've been through several brands. The work around has been to not connect more than 2 or 3 external drives at one time via firewire to the Mac. Another tip: If your Mac isn't mounting your external drives and restarting doesn't work, try unplugging for 30 minutes. This seems to reset the firewire inputs. I use an external USB 2.0 hub for the four drives at home and haven't had any issues having them all connected at once.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat HD

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: I purchased this drive about three months ago and now wonder how I could have survived without an external HD. I've used it with Firewire (400) on my desktop and USB on my laptop. I expected to use it just for back up but found it works fine as an extra drive.

I recently captured some VHS videos to my laptop. Because my laptop hd did not have enough space, I ended up moving the files to the Buffalo drive with the intention of moving them to my desktop. Instead, I left all the files on the Buffalo drive and did all my video editing without having to load up the desktop hd.

Cons: It seems to run warm but I have no basis for comparison so this could be normal operation for external drives.

Other Thoughts: Others have reported intermittently loss of connection with the drive. In the months I've had it, this has not happened at all. I'm considering buying another one (really paranoid about equipment failure).

1 out of 5 eggsGreat way to lose your data!

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: Newegg's order processing and shipping was amazing, like always.

Cons: First unit failed mechanically within 6 weeks. Replacement unit from Buffalo Technology (refurbished) failed within one day! I am currently waiting for my second warranty replacement unit to arrive. Unfortunately, there is no way that I would ever trust my data to this drive. I am basically out the purchase price plus shipping for 2 warranty replacements. This is a very expensive doorstop.

Other Thoughts: Hands down, this was the worst purchase that I have ever made.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: Slim design, lots of different ports.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I did some research into Buffalo. You have something like a 4/5 chance of getting one of the better brands inside. I like those odds!

2 out of 5 eggsThere's no issues so far but there's a big reason to worry.

This review is from: BUFFALO DriveStation Combo 4 1TB USB 2.0 / IEEE 1394a / 1394b / eSATA 3.5" External Hard Drive HD-HS1.0TQ Silver

Pros: It seems to be working fine after 3 days of heavy file transfer use, with up to 600GB of data.

Unfortunately I did my proper research after using this product and then getting to see what hard drive was actually working inside the enclosure. From my understanding the 1T model of this product, or mine at least, uses the Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB.

If you wanna check to be sure if you're using the same Samsung drive then left click on any drive you got in your computer folder and click on the "Properties" option, then go to the "Hardware" tab and you'll see a list with the names of all the drives that you're running.

Cons: The reason I said unfortunately in the "Pros" is because the hard drive that I got and that I think is mainly used with this product has according to many review sites, including Newegg, the highest failure and return rates when compared to most of the other terabyte drives and that's after using it for only two to five months.

score: 2 out of 5 eggs

- 1 egg,
for only 1 year of manufacturer's warranty, that's according to the manufacturer's website

-2 eggs.
for using the very risky hard drive that's highly rated to fail after only a few months of running

I wish they chose a different manufacturer for the drive, although it wouldn't be as quiet then but noise is a small price to pay compared to loosing all of your data.

Other Thoughts: Either a lot of the Samsung's F1 1T drives come in bad batches or it's normal for them to die so soon which is completely ridiculous when you're suppose to be paying for something that marketed to deliver.
