5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS Solution

Pros: Easy to setup, great performance, data redundancy (I'm using mirrored raid).

I have 4 computers in my house... I tell everyone if they want their data to be saved store it on the NAS. I also have a secondary 500GB Buffalo NAS to have an additional backup of pictures on. I think Google's theory is that if it's on 3 HDD's the chances of losing the data are very small.

This is a much better solution than having one PC act as the file server... this thing is always up, it's small and out of the way, doesn't need system updates, etc.

I would highly recommend for home networks, and small businesses.

Cons: - Web interface is a bit slow but you don't need to use it very often.

Other Thoughts: I have yet to know what happens if a drive were to fail... hopefully I'll never have to figure it out :)

1 out of 5 eggsBuffalo Linkstation in Domain

Pros: Nothing worth mentioning. It works for basic features.

Cons: This unit may be fine for home use, although you still have the performance issues. But try to use this in a domain environment and good luck. Our first hurdle was the domain administrator password. It was too complex for the Buffalo drive to handle, so we had to create a dummy acct to get past this. The domain security tie-in does not work properly, and the web interface for configuring this is awful. So now we've had to lower our desired security settings to get it to work. I do not recommend this box in and office/domain setting. Really unhappy with it.

Other Thoughts: Good luck getting any support from these people.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty Good NAS

Pros: Easy to setup, web interface is pretty good, RAID feature works great and works great with memeo backup software. There are complaints that this box is slow, but I've used a few other NASs and this is by far the fastest and most reliable I've used. Not sure what the other people are doing with it or what they are expecting. It’s great for backing up my projects and great for sharing things on my network. I would recommend this NAS to anybody.

Cons: When the box comes out of power save mode, every once in a while (rare) it will forget that I had logged in to it already. The easy fix is to leave in "ON", besides I'm not sure how much you are actually saving by this box going to sleep... you probably could save more by pulling you monitor out of the wall instead!

Other Thoughts: I have Vista 64 and have experienced no compatibility issues.

4 out of 5 eggsGood but slow

Pros: - easy to install, just plug it in and connect it to network
- very quiet, can't hear the fan

Cons: - very slow data transfer rates of ~10-12MBps, like most cheap NASs
- comes configured in RAID 0 as default, it should be RAID 1 default
- doesn't work as a Mac Time Machine backup destination

Other Thoughts: Like most of these cheap NASs, the performance is really poor, it takes a long time to copy a few movies/videos to the NAS. The device is very quiet and easy to use, you don't need to install the bloatware to use it. I wish it came in RAID 1 as default instead of RAID 0.

There's a new generation of NAS coming out that use new chipsets with much higher performance. The new Buffalo LS-XHL get ~40-50MBps. If you can wait a couple months, you will be able to find a better/faster product.

5 out of 5 eggsNice reliability

Pros: Easy to setup. Just plug it in. 2TB! Can't beat the price for 2 1GB drives running in RAID.

Cons: The memo software trial included from the start was very slow but I think that was because there was a firmware upgrade needed because of Vista. Can't wait till Windows 7 is available!

4 out of 5 eggsGlad i bought it.

Pros: took almost nothing to set it up and access it. bundled software is optional. instantly detected my attached MyBook and made it accessible. Clear and easy to understand web interface.

Cons: When configuring anything to do with the internal disks from the web interface it was very very slow, but other options like user management were pretty quick. Its a small annoyance but once you get it setup you dont really have to mess with it too much.

Other Thoughts: Has a nice shutdown sequence when you position switch to off. It slowly winds down the disks rather than just "clicking" them off.
