4 out of 5 eggsDecent, for the money

Pros: This thing booted right up ready to rock.. I was transferring stuff to it in minutes. Works great with a 330 Watt ACP UPS, plugged in via USB.. Can set to shutdown on low battery warning. Installed in a small office with ~120 GB of invoices, etc, AND sending full system images to it via Ghost completely without issue

Cons: No Ethernet indicator lights, no RSYNC support, web interface is very slow (even with a full gig connection,) transfer rates could be quicker.

Other Thoughts: It boils down to what you get for the money. A 500 gig NAS that functions well and has a few options like this one is worth $100 at this time. With other drives you're buying space that in many small office setups will never be used, and the price jump from a low-ball unit like this to something truly respectable is huge..

Haven't tested streaming/video as it won't be used for that.

4 out of 5 eggsPretty Good

Pros: -Sleek looking
-Easy to set up
-Web Access

Cons: -Firmware updates are quirky
-Pretty loud
-Sleep settings are limited/quirky

Other Thoughts: Been using this for about 4 months now and so far, no disconnects or other problems. Had about 3 or 4 firmware updates now and will tell you only 1 has gone smoothly. The others, the web browser will just sit there telling you not to close the browser or reboot the device. On one, I actually started it at 8 AM and by 7 PM, the browser stayed the same. Upon a reboot, found the firmware actually updated, just the browser didn't. Overall, a pretty cool device and gives the avg home user cloud capability.
According to Buffalo's support, this can only be configured to sleep during traditional night hours. This is great for a small business, but for my situation (home use), I'd like to save some more energy during the day as well, but it will not do it.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Garbage

Pros: None. LG makes a much better, more reliable and higher capacity device with more features for less money, with higher quality and overall lower cost of ownership.

Cons: Power and Connectivity issues from the start, on/off timer didn't work, Device needed to be reset quite often, hard drive defective, Buffalo support extremely poor.

Other Thoughts: Device broke after 3 months, too late to return to NewEgg. Support useless beyond the forums and manual, recommended a data retrieval company they now claim voided the warranty. Spent several thousand retrieving the data, still unable to get a replacement several months later. Bought an LG in the meantime which works much better, has more features, cost less, and is more reliable. Save your money and frustration and DON'T BUY A BUFFALO Drive.

2 out of 5 eggsDied after a little over a year's ownership

Pros: when it worked, it worked very well. I was able to manage it without a hitch and use Norton 360 to backup my computer to it. Getting it to work with my wife's Macbook Pro was a bit tricky but I got it working with no problems.

Cons: I could no longer access the drive after a little over a year of owning it. I've been working with the tech through email and nothing is working. I also had to force a firmware update, which was a temporary fix before it started to lock up again. Of course, my firmware was the 1.07, which is the highest available for that particular model. With the new hardware they're using, they have the firmware up to 1.24 or something. Maybe the new hardware and firmware is better, but I won't be risking my data protection with Buffalo again. Thankfully, no data was lost.

Other Thoughts: Considering its price, it is a very appealing NAS for the beginner, as I was a year ago with NAS technology (not computers, I've built my last 3 computers from scratch), but after this experience I've decided to give Synology a shot. They offer a 2 year warranty and I can't find a bad review about their DS210j. However, it costs over twice as much as this unit when you add the HDD costs that must be purchased seperately. I suppose time will tell if its worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy to use

Pros: Nice alternative to a full-blown server. Installation is pretty much automatic. Great for streaming mp3's or video. Web access setup very intuitive (let's you access your files from anywhere, thru the web, as a limited web server). Keeps up with wireless HD video streaming via local network.

Cons: Power conserve mode seems to be a little iffy, but then it doesn't use much power, so is OK to just leave in the "always on" setting (best for server functions anyway). If you have computers with multiple versions of windows (like me - XP, Vista, 7) is more complicated to set up network access. But I blame that on Microsoft.

Other Thoughts: Great device if you just want to stream music/video and access files by multiple computers, without bothering to set up a server. Overall, I am very happy for the price i paid.

1 out of 5 eggsBuffalo NAS

Pros: None

Cons: Garbage

Other Thoughts: This device is garbage. I dont know how buffalo could even give away these devices. Their tech support is horrible as well. The device came and within a month started power cycling every 5 minutes. I contacted their tech support and paid for expedited shipping at the beginning of the week. It is now thursday, a week and 3 days later and the device has not shipped. Buffalo tech support can not figure out what is happening so I am dead in the water until they figure out their mess. DO NOT BUY A BUFFALO NAS!!!!! Go with QNAP or something else that is a quality product.

Manufacturer Response:

Please, send me your contact info. I would like to track down your RMA and see why you have yet to receive it. Generally as long as product is in stock, units will ship the same day or the next day depending on when the request is made.

5 out of 5 eggsEasy install, thoughtful UI

Pros: Very inexpensive per GB, gigabit interface, very easy setup with CD installer (very difficult otherwise). A year after my first install, the drive is running perfectly.

Cons: None yet!

Other Thoughts: I have installed three of these 500GB NAS for customers, and I plan to buy a 1GB for myself. The drive is silent. The "auto" function turns off the drive if there is no network or USB activity. The setup program makes setup a snap, and the backend UI is about as simple as it gets. Five eggs.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat but Fragile

Pros: Fast, works well, powerful interface.

Cons: Fragile; didn't survive move due to a button.

Other Thoughts: This is reasonably easy to set up, but requires the NasNavi software initially. But the "Function" button (sw2 on the internal board), which protrudes, is connected via a solid piece of plastic from the front panel to the circuit board. This snapped off when the drive was put against other items during a move. That renders the entire unit inoperable.

If you're just going to set it and forget it, this is a great choice, but if it's going to get moved around, maybe something else.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: Everything works it was pretty easy to setup. This thing is easy to setup and get working with Vista. Got it working with linksys wvc80n and cisco wvc210.

Cons: Got it working and working like it should is two different story. 1st off try updating firmware 1.1 to 1.7 well i couldn't get it to work at all. Firmware could never find my NAS i turned off all firewalls in router and windows and disable antivirus still no luck. I even uninstalled vmware still don't work which they ask me to do. I gave up after 3 hours.

I had problems getting my wvc80n and wvc210 to see the NAS. I had to delete the username/password (allow everyone access) for shared folder on the NAS GUI.( took 4 hours to figure that out) I think there is a fix for this but remember i cant update my firmware. When i had username/password setup on the NAS for Vista it worked about 90% but non of my cameras could connect to it. But like i said after turning it off everything connects to it just fine.

Do not use the sleep timer it will never wake up! I had to restart it everytime so i just turned it off it i didnt have a problem anymore.

Other Thoughts: It does what i need it to. I wouldn't put anything important on this drive. I only use it for my camera recordings and to upload files throught the ftp.

4 out of 5 eggsNo troubles thus far

Pros: Decent speed; I haven't tested a single large file transfer, but opening, saving and creating files over the network seems pretty snappy. Enough space to satisfy our small company's needs (images, music, daily point-of-sale files averaging 2MB).

Cons: I was a little disappointed with the inability to share subfolders (only root folders can be shared), I would have preferred to create a root folder called "users" and store the shared folders for each user within that one. I ended up creating root folders for each user.

Sharing to users proved to be confusing at first. All computers and the NAS were on the same workgroup, and I set up the usernames & passwords correctly on the NAS. Even with all that I was still prompted for a username/pass combo and had to save it as a network login within each workstation.

Other Thoughts: Getting past those minor shortcomings listed in "Cons", the device is performing admirably. BTW, what's with newegg flagging "P.O.S" (without the dots) as an inappropriate word?
