3 out of 5 eggsI like the NAS, but...

Pros: NAS drive!

Cons: I am used to NAS drives at work that are ready when I am. I turn my computer off after most uses and then when I restart my computer the NAS drive isn't available right away about 50% of the time. I've poked around the settings but can't find out why this happens.

Other Thoughts: Good price for a NAS and you can connect a USB drive to it also, but I just don't like the delay before I can use the drive.

1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Looks good.
I can probably part-out the harddrive that it came with.

Cons: First , the unit wouldnt boot or initiate after installing per instructions. I emailed Buffalo tech support, and after 3 days they told me that the firmware needed an update. after doing so it worked.
Extremely complicated to make work for internet sharing and iPhone sharing; Never could get it to work and gave up trying.
Finally, the whole unit died after 3 months; it went into "EM Mode". Now Buffalo Tech Support wont return any emails, drat. Waste of money.

4 out of 5 eggsGood mid-range NAS

Pros: bought it as a Shell Shocker for 73.49$. For that price it is a good device. Was very easy to configure, exception for WebAccess.

Cons: WebAccess did not work, and documentation is very poor about it. Device Web Interface is slow to react.

Other Thoughts: Drive can be upgrade, but warranty could be void.
Could not use this device has is, to work Music/Photo/Video Windows 7 librairies and Media Player/Zune, because of the Non-Indexed content, but using mklink command line tool, I've mange to make it work

2 out of 5 eggsFalse Advertising - No Time Machine Support in Lion

Pros: Inexpensive solution for Windows backup.

Cons: Buffalo did not participate in any of the 6-month beta for OSX Lion and cannot be used with Lion. Their advertising clearly says it works with all versions of OSX newer than 10.3.9 which is blatantly false. There is no statement from Buffalo that they have acknowledged this problem or that there is a fix, despite user complaints from as early as February of this year.

Other Thoughts: If you are comfortable with unknowledgeable technical support that will ignore your problems and can't afford a QNAP device, then Buffalo is your company. It worked fine for over a year, but their support for new operating systems is terrible and there is no way to update the outdated protocol yourself, as other manufacturers (such as QNAP) will let you. I will not buy another NAS from Buffalo again.

4 out of 5 eggsLightweight Champ

Pros: 1 - 1Gb Ethernet with jumbo frames
2 - Dynamic DNS via
3 - USB Port
4 - NovaBackup software included

Cons: 1 - Very s l o w interface
2 - Integrated backup is useless
3 - No RAID

Other Thoughts: I usually buy from Newegg but the local price was the same and I wanted to compare this unit to my Synology DS-211.

At it's current price point, this NAS has no competition (1TB, gigabit network with jumbo frames) so by feature alone, it could be a 5 egg unit. It loses an egg mainly due to it's inability to see other computers on the network and make backups of network shares. Honestly, it was kinda dumb to give a NAS the ability to only backup itself (huh?). The inclusion of NovaBackup is nice but moving the burden of backing up the PC to the PC just isn't the same.

The price keeps me from removing a second egg but it would have been better to put an eSATA rather than a USB port for drive expansion. It's not a leap to include RAID1 with eSATA.

If you don't mind spending 3x more, the Synology DS-211 is the way to go (dual drive, raid 1, fast interface) but for small home networks, the LS-CH1.0TL (that name is WAY too long) is worthy of consideration and a much better name

2 out of 5 eggsNetwork Problem

Pros: As of right now, I don't have any pros. I haven't used it. I'm not sure I'll keep it.

Cons: I can only use the drive when the drive is connected to a router. If the drive is connected to a switch (which is connected to the router), the drive is not on the network: I can't ping it, the activity LEDs on the drive do not light up. DLink (maker of the switch) says "Buffalo's problem." Buffalo says "We don't know. It should work." I say "Hasta la vista, Buffalo" unless I can discover a work around.

Other Thoughts: Somebody (DLink or Buffalo) has dropped the ball regarding networking. Since 5+ other computers are connected to the switch and all have internet access through the router and are sharing files with each other, I'd say it's Buffalo's fault.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear NetlossSofar,
Sorry to hear about the non-connectivity your having with your switch and the NAS. send me a email with your contact info so I can see if we can trouble shoot and find a resolution.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy

Pros: it did back up while it ran

Cons: Bought one of these June 2009. Got a replacement in 3 weeks as the first one kept disconnecting. New one did too but only every month or so till last week when it died. beeps at me and blinks red. Probably past warranty but even if they did replace it the data is gone.

Other Thoughts: Don't want anything to do with Buffalo anymore. Will order a different brand of Network Storage.
