5 out of 5 eggsWorth what I paid

Pros: 8tb of storage
Very reasonable price
Quick setup
- Only took 10 minutes to install on the rack
- I've read a lot of reviews here and elsewhere saying that it was very difficult to interface with active directory. This is not true. I was able to interface immediately. And I do not consider myself an advanced-level sysadmin.

Cons: I haven't noticed anything yet. Setting up directories and permissions based on Active Directory has been a breeze.

Other Thoughts: The ease of setup, the price, and the 8tb of storage make this a no-brainer.

1 out of 5 eggsToss these if you have them

Pros: Good price point if you don't care about unstable services and unreliable backups and recoveries...

Cons: Have two of these as well as a couple of the like designed iSCSI units. Total junk. We bought in big last Fall and have discovered that they are very high maintenance and the support people are of no help. Twice we have had units lose a drive and not be able to rebuild a RAID 5. Backup support through local USB is flaky at best. Drops connections to Windows authentication weekly... generally just a pain. Better off putting up a simple linux server or windows 2008 storage session. At least you can debug those.

Use these for network scratch space but don't put anything you will miss on them unless you place to run a job to copy them to another device for backups. Learned my lesson and we are dumping all Buffalo products and getting something more reliable.

Manufacturer Response:

Sorry for the intermittent performance you are getting out of your unit. Please shoot me an email so we can trouble shoot. It is possible that the unit is faulty or there is an issue with your AD server. This unit has been shipping for a long time now and we have not seen any issues like weekly dropping of Windows Authentication. Also the USB backup is very reliable. It recognizes multiple drives so it makes it easy to rotate drives for offsite backups.

4 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Cheap RAID storage solution

Cons: Poor documentation. Adding to domain was not as easy as it should be.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Buy

Pros: It has 8TB of storage

Cons: Buffalo Support is horrible. Couldn't connect from Windows 2008 servers as a CIFS/UNC path share. Support put me on hold for approx. 1 hour and hung up - 2 times. If they can't support connecting from a windows machine - they shouldn't advertise that they can.

Other Thoughts: I'm basically stuck with 2 of these devices - I'm past the New Egg 30 day return limit - and Buffalo won't even discuss the issue.

Manufacturer Response:

Please send me an email so we can troubleshoot your devices. The TeraStation completely supports CIFs/UNC. CIFs/UNC is enabled by default and is the most basic and core service offered by this NAS. If you can’t access \\terastation\share, something is wrong. I would also like to discuss your support experience. We have system checks to make sure there are no excessive hold times or rep initiated disconnects. I would like to see your call history and will need your phone number to do that.
