4 out of 5 eggsI Love This, I'm Buying A Second One!

Pros: Super power efficient, very small footprint, great capacity, flexible sharing/permissions, quiet

Cons: Not the fastest NAS

Other Thoughts: This has been a fantastic NAS for my home network. I configured it for RAID 1 mode and set up a number of shares with permissions for different family members. No problems with it at all.

I agree that the web interface is a bit slow and could use a little work, but I don't spend much time there; set it up and barely need to check on it.

I'm considering getting a second one for extra data redundancy.

Sorry to hear of the troubles others have had, but I still believe in this little guy and am extremely happy with it.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great for Me!

Pros: Extremely small, virtually noiseless, stable, DLNA server, USB Printer support, and it's hackable. Heck, it's a RAID capable NAS that only draws 15W, so you can leave it on all the time without having "Carbon Guilt".

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: I have never had a single problem with this or any other Buffalo NAS. I admit that the web-based management interface leaves a little to be desired, but it gets the job done. Plus if you really hate it, you can root the box almost effortlessly and basically manage it like any other Linux box (Note that it's ARM based so you'll likely need to setup an alternate build environment).

Some people have complained about the Network speed. I admit that you're probably only going to get 10s of MBs of transfer speed, but the trade off is well worth it for the space, noise, and electrical savings. FWIW, I have copied multi-gigabyte files from/to it whilst simultaneously streaming video to my PS3 without any noticeable slowdown. YMMV.

1 out of 5 eggsDo Not Buy

Pros: Quite, Low Power

Cons: The interface is unbelievably slow. Right now I am transferring a movie file at 3 MB/S over a gigabit switch! I have never seen it transfer much above 8 for any sustained period. That is so much slower than USB....

Unreliable as well. I unplugged the NAS for a day or two then when I powered it back on and tried to log in the language of the menu was Japanese or Chinese. When flashing the firmware it crashed and died. I lost all the data because you can't access the data on raid without their controller. I sent it in for a new one, they sent two bad ones to me and then the third finally worked! Pathetic. Do not buy this at all. Also the first Buffalo CS Rep was extremely rude and acted like it was my fault the firmware failed to flash and it died.

Other Thoughts: To be fair the other CS Reps were helpful, the first one was very rude and even hung up on me. I have a Buffalo only because its reviews about its range were so solid, it was tough to buy Buffalo after owning this product.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy Buffalo mini!!

Pros: Compact size, quiet

Cons: User interface is very slow, permission administration is slow and clunky. And lastly, IT CRASHES often!!

Other Thoughts: The first mini we owned completely locked up and died after 10 months of use, then its replacement just lost one of the two drives so that now there is no backup. The problem is, when a drive crashes, you must send in the failed drive in order to get another one along with the data that's on it. There is no option to recover any data yourself and transfer. Don't buy this product, it's not reliable
