4 out of 5 eggsHappy little NAS

Pros: Small, quiet. Simple to set up. No complaints about the performance, especially for the price. Shares between Linux and Windows with no issues. Supports more advanced features than the lowest-end models.

Cons: Does not support NFS

Other Thoughts: Make sure you hook this up with Gigabit LAN or faster - 100mbps is just too slow. If the power light turns amber, it's not dying - it just wants a firmware upgrade. If you want to use Auto power mode on Linux, you have to send it a wake-on-lan "magic packet" every couple of minutes to keep it awake (easy with a Python script).

5 out of 5 eggsDoes the Job

Pros: Setup was relatively easy. Had to update the firmware out the box. Had some minor troubleshooting, but it was due to me being impatient. 2nd attempt to update firmware, being patient this time, worked out. Works very well with DLNA and can stream different media on different platforms at the same time (tv, ps3, ipad, iphone) Can also relegate permissions across shares for accessing private or public files. Media Player included to allow instant playback of audio/video files. Haven't tried the BitTorrent functionality yet, so cannot comment on it.

Cons: Accessing media while on the go was rather slow, but I was attempting to stream a 2GB movie. Updating firmware over the web was rather painfully slow. Forums suggested a manual update, but I was looking for more ease of use.

Other Thoughts: My needs for this was more media based for all my DLNA devices and smartphones. I do not store important files on this for lack of redundancy and fault tolerance. (There's only one Drive, so I can stand to lose my copies of The Walking Dead tv show) Price point fits the bill and serves my needs to a tee.

1 out of 5 eggsBuffalo Service only thing poorer than this drive

Pros: Provides marginal function while working. Pretty looking blue light that flashed all the time.

Cons: Problems from day one. Hard drive would routinely spin down during operation, had to reset almost daily. When the thing finally did fail completely (3 months after we bought it), we called Buffalo support, which was a Joke. Their online forums were only moderately helpful, and their customer support was even worse. They referred us to a third party where we spent over $2,300 to retrieve our data, later denying the vendor was a company they supported; thus voiding the warranty. We've spent months with both Buffalo support and the Third Party retrieval vendor with no better hope in getting a replacement than when we started. We had to mitigate our losses and buy a competitors drive (which may or may not start with an L and end with a G), which we are very happy with.

Other Thoughts: We only used this drive to share 4 excel workbooks. Didn't use a fraction of the space, and had very few users utilizing the device to a fraction of its potential. Despite this, we had far more problems than with our current drive which works as a network server for our whole company and 3 remote sites. I've never dealt with worse customer service and wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy.

4 out of 5 eggsno complaints

Pros: Lots of storage space, easy to setup, web admin interface with lots of config options. Backup to usb drive is nice as well, although takes a bit of experimenting to understand fully.

Cons: web interface is slow and clunky. I don't like the web2.0 aspect as it doesn't seem to behave right.

Other Thoughts: I've really benefited from adding a gigabit switch to the wired machines. Accessing items such as a photo album over wireless can be painful. It's best to do most your work over a wired network, but this is not a fault of the machine, but the limited bandwidth of the G wireless network.
