5 out of 5 eggsPrice, compatibility, portability, manufacturer

Pros: Has not failed. Always been recognized by OS and applications. Convenient and easy to use. Adequate performance. Handful of applications/tasks available for use. Documentation and application updates are solid.

The major thrust of Buffalo's business is storage. I would not expect a poorly designed, built, or supported product from them. I was not disappointed.

Cons: Proprietary on-board applications.

Other Thoughts: My goal was to have a portable HD that would be used for backup of OS, boot drives, and application drives prior to any big changes. Using Acronis as my backup/restore tool, this has worked wonderfully.

Backup/restore of laptops and standalone platforms has always worked. Acronis is adept at network backup as well, it is a great product in that regard.

I have only used it as a backup device. So I cannot comment or review on the other utilities.

I do love storage devices. This came out at a good price at a time when I needed something dependable. For portable external backup storage, I do recommend this without reservation.

5 out of 5 eggsDo not install the software that comes with it!!!

Pros: * This thing is very small...I like that. A little bit bigger than my hand. Fits in my pocket.
* It uses a mini-USB cable. So, if you do not like the cable that comes with it (see other reviews) you can buy one for $3-$4. I personally like the cable that comes with it and found no problems with it.
* It is fast. No need to use the software that comes with the drive. Simple Windows copying is just fine and very fast.
* The drive looks nice.
* very makes no sounds at all.
* runs cool.

Cons: * Do not use the software. I installed it at first and then used to copy files. Sometime the copy dialogue comes messed up: does not have a title, does not show what is being copied and to where (this could be a problem is you have multiple copy task running simultaneously, and often it crashes. I ended up uninstalling it and just using windows file copy.

Other Thoughts: * I believe this is built the old fashion way: laptop drive and external enclosure (You can see a picture of this on the website of that store that makes the kindle ... call it ggg). Maybe in the future I can use a bigger hard drive with it.
* I think not all drives from this model are built using the same internal hard drive. The picture on ggg shows a samsung HDD. But, I know I read one review saying it had a noisy HDD made by WD. I am happy with the one I got (I have not opened mine yet).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product still

Pros: Wanted to update my review, still solid and well built, runs quiet and only requires the USB to power this, which I will explain the issue with that below. Very powerful and quick HDD, had to format it directly after receiving it for xbox 360 use as an external media drive. Which before format was 460g and after I was able to milk 470g. Might consider this if you want to weeze out some more space for storage?

Cons: Well, since the cord (usb cord) is the only way to power the device. It's a great idea and concept the issue is the cord is short and very cheaply made/thin. So often the HDD can be shifted a tad bit over and it will start to have issues receiving the power it needs to stay on.

Other Thoughts: Good purchase even if you have to buy a better replacement cord with this, it's still a wonderful deal. Great product and gives you just what it promises.

5 out of 5 eggsBeautiful.

Pros: Great, feels great and sturdy. Has a beautiful design, missing 60gigs give or take a few but that's to be expected. Was a great purchase, worked right out of the box and came with a 1 year warranty. The drivers where installed instantly and found without the software on the HDD. and recognized by all my devices such as Xbox/pc/etc. Overall good.

Cons: none, but I will update this if something happens.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it's made for.

Pros: -Small
-Easy to set up
-no hassle with directory
-Power comes from USB instead from power cable always a plus when you don't need to plug in more than you don't have or need

Cons: None, so far.

Other Thoughts: $50, in my opinion, is the best price for the product.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: It's the first DOA product I've ever received from New Egg.

Cons: Dead on Arrival. It makes the tell-tale clicking sounds of it trying to seek but failing. Disk Management locks up when the drive is attached. Disappointed and will now see what the return for replacement options are. Too bad I got this for my kids to use on our gaming systems. She was really excited to pull new games down this weekend. No luck.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat, worth it

Pros: Just received mine today and setup was a breeze. Instantly recognized by Windows 7. Build quality feels good and compact size is a plus. USB cable length is more than enough and easy to see blue activity light on edge of drive. Came with setup/manual files loaded onto drive. Would definitely recommend this drive and Buffalo in general.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsYour basic external storage.

Pros: Comes formatted as NTFS with 465GB capacity.
Ran an error scan and found all sectors to be good.
HDTune 2.55 benched an average transfer rate of 29.8MB\s with an access time of 17.8ms.

I found it to be very quite

Cons: The cable that comes with is is REALLY short. Ok if it will stay on a flat surface next to your laptop, but I needed this for a customer's desktop. The included quick setup guide states

"To reduce electromagnetic interference, please use the supplied USB cable."

The cable is really thin and feels cheap. I doubt there is any special shielding in there.

But because my complaints are only for the cable, and they use a standard USB plug, I will only take off one egg.

Other Thoughts: For the price this is a great basic standard USB 2.0 external storage.

1 out of 5 eggsIF YOUR MAC, STAY AWAY!!!!!!!

Pros: Quick shipping

Cons: Following Buffalo PDF reformatting to MAC seemed simple, failed. called Buffalo tech support, they said I was doing it wrong, joined computers so they would do it- still failed. I asked for a MAC savey tech support. They said "We don't have any, we are PC people" an hour and a half no progress in doing a simple reformat to MAC. If you are a MAC STAY AWAY from any Buffalo products. They are PC only.

Other Thoughts: Tech support called back 3 hr later and said they hadn't figured out what the problem was. I was able to figure out the problem and correct it. The problem was I folloWed their written directions, which were a dead end. Stay away from Buffalo if you are a MAC, you have NO TECH SUPPORT HELP.
