4 out of 5 eggsNot bad. could be better

Pros: Small footprint. doesn't have those floodlight LED's that light up an entire room. Has the normal applications that most NAS devices have. Pretty fast transfer speeds. Quiet

Cons: a bunch:
1- Not very easy to set up. I have a RAID-5 system with 3 after I had some HDD rearrangement, but not it's been giving me an error on disk 4 (which isn't there and not even set up with RAID5) and for the life of me can't see how to get rid of it.

2- Firwmare update is VERY buggy. My device froze many times during firmware updates that I no longer bother with it.

3- The torrent client webpage likes to freeze from time to time, and you have to go back to the NAS web interface, disable/enable the torrent client, and "refresh" the page.

Other Thoughts: I use this for media storage, so I am not very concerned with the issues that I have, except for the HDD LEDs (see CONS)

3 out of 5 eggsHorrible transfer rates with RAID 5

Pros: Good web based user interface. Included installable software works okay too. Lots of good built in features such as share to internet and direct upload via USB drive.

Cons: Horrible speeds with RAID 5. Many customers are very unhappy with the transfer rates of this array. Most are getting 15 MBps read and worse with write. The processor that Buffalo included in this array is underpowered and therefore can't process data quickly enough to fill the fat 1Gb pipe that it has available to it. .

Other Thoughts: If you are looking for a streaming media storage device, look elsewhere. If you just want a place to dump all of your digital trash and transfer speeds aren't a big concern to you, this array will not disappoint

Manufacturer Response:

CK. can you email me so we can trouble shoot? the LS-QV4.0TL/R5 is a very fast unit. you should average 72MBps read speeds. My only guess for the poor performance would be that you are on a 10/100 network. Or it is possible you meant to review the LS-Q4.0TL/R5. the LS-Q4.0TL/R5 is built to be low cost and the LS-QV4.0TL/R5 is built for performance.

5 out of 5 eggsRaid 5 storage

Pros: Wow, where do i start.
Nice having special software to set things up and "help" option explain the option.
I have not had a drive faulure yet, but if it happens, i know i will not loose any thing. [Raid 5 is great, but only possible w-4 drives plus].

Cons: I have none to mention.

Other Thoughts: some times i wonder if the fans are running on the units i have.
Bought first one from [local electronics store] 4 yrs ago, liked it so much, bought one from guy on craigslist and the serial numbers are 200 apart.
If you use raid 5, transfer w-1gig is moderate, but at no raid, i would think it smokes.
Mostly movies and software and the pair hooked to power backup so tif power is lost, they shut down quickly.

looking for one more.

Manufacturer Response:

Applelk, thanks for the great review. I do want to suggest that you always keep your data in at least 2 separate locations. Yes, the raid mode protects your data with a drive failure. But you need to protect yourself if something happens to the unit itself. what if it gets exposed to water. or someone drops it off a shelf. if you dont have your data residing on your PC, then it would be wise to get another unit and have the LinkStation run scheduled backup jobs to another network or USB drive. please email me if you have questions.
