1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy for a Raid 1 backup

Pros: None

Cons: This only comes with one HDD and it's a green label WD HDD. You can't use a green HDD to create a raid. You need to have a red or black label HDDs to create a Raid 1. Will be returning!

5 out of 5 eggsUnbeatable Budget NAS if you upgrade the drives

Pros: Two drive bays for mirroring (or striping if you are crazy).

Much better hardware spec's than anything else in this price range.

PogoPlug makes (almost) everything easy!

Cons: A Green drive? Really? I thought this thing was all about performance!

PogoPlug software couldn't get an active synch going between an external HDD and this device, no matter what. Finally had to just assign the NAS a drive letter with PogoPlug and use Microsoft's free SnycToy to make it work.

Adding a drive and formatting it takes no time at all. Checking the drive before it can be used takes all day and all night!

Only 1 year warranty. Doesn't Buffalo have more faith in their equipment than that? We replaced the OE drive with new ones with 5 year warranties instead of only one absurd year.

Other Thoughts: So the first thing I did for the customer who bought this rig was pull the Green drive out and put two 2TB WD Black drives in its place, without slowing down to think that the firmware lives on the internal drives. The machine was then rendered unusable.

I put the Green drive back in and added ONE of the Black drives with it. The next day it was done setting up the Green drive and Black drive in a mirrored array. I pulled the Green drive and put the other Black drive in. One more day later we finally had a RAID1 array running and the lousy OEM Green drive decommissioned.

The purpose of this particular NAS was a backup of the backup. That is, Backup Exec runs on my customer's server and backs up to an external HDD. After the backup completes, SyncToy runs and synches the HDD to this NAS, which lives at the business owner's house so there will be a surviving backup if the building is hit by a meteor.

The whole system works great, thanks to PogoPlug and SyncToy.

2 out of 5 eggsWorst DLNA feature set

Pros: Easy setup, I mean really easy. Remote access is easiest thing ever.

Cons: Dear Buffalo. This Nas is a DLNA fail, I mean the file titles are wrong, my wdtv picks it up but when I select a movie it plays a different movie, sometimes I get the error no files found in the folder.

Next launch windows media player and the pogoplug shows up as media server, but once again, no videos, no music, no pictures are found by media player.

I absolutely can't stream any movies, and the new files added are not refreshed until I restart the unit, why? I mean why is it so hard to get the most common feature the most common feature on it right?

Other Thoughts: I regret purchasing this becuase this is a big giant fail when it comes to media server features. Is it really that hard to get that big of a feature right on this product? I am stuck with it and here is to hoping that buffalo will get their firmware together and fix these issues.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING REMOTE ACCESS

Pros: If you're looking for a NAS that works similarly to Dropbox that you can access anywhere around the world on your "My Computer" Window's Explorer or Mac "Finder" without having to use a pesky Web Browser interface, LOOK NO FURTHER.

For Remote access a typcial NAS often restricts you to using a web browser to upload and download files. As a frequently traveling designer, I have to work on my files often (ie: CAD files, Photoshopping, etc.) and do not want to deal with the hassle of first downloading the file from the web browser, then working on them, then re-uploading them again through the web browser.

With the Buffalo NAS, I simply have to download the POGOPLUG software, and it Maps a drive onto MY Computer which acts and works EXACTLY like a Local HardDrive. I know that you can map a network drive without using POGOPLUG, but that technique only works when your computer is within the Local Area Network aka my Home, thus not when I'm overseas!

A Great Buy, highly recommen

Cons: The embedded software is SIMPLE. It doesn't have much in terms of an extremely comprehensive software package as is offered by Synology, etc.

Other Thoughts: For the working Road Warrior!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!

Pros: Unit was exactly as expected, and set up between multiple computers on my network was not difficult.
Set up with mobile devices was very easy to do, and the iPhone app even allows you to watch videos and listen to music stored in the drive! If the video wasn't compatible - it would convert for iphone compatibility.
Pricing of the unit with rebate (at the time) was excellent!

Cons: As was the case with some other reviews, the access time is a little slower than what I would have liked.

The unit is tricky to set up, as once connected to the network and internet, it needs to flash update, before you can start accessing it. There was no indication of this in the users manual.

Other Thoughts: Over-all, a very good unit for the price.
Software is decent.

Will need to obtain a second drive to test Raid performance.

5 out of 5 eggsCurious

Pros: I got this as Christmas Present from my parents -I'm really hopeful it will work for my household

Cons: there were no instructions of any kind in the box except for a tiny Quick Start Guide - while I'm sure I can figure it out - I wondered if this was normal.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well for me

Pros: This thing is fast for the price! Windows Backup maxes out at 32 MB/s though regular file transfer runs slower (~25 MB/s) due to some housekeeping the NAS does in the background. Be sure you have Gigabit Ethernet to take advantage of the speed.

Cons: My main complaint is that the firmware/ web administration is kind of simple. You cannot set up separate "shares" there is only one. Not much to administer here. But that's not a real fault of the Cloudstor, since it is targeted at users who want to put media out in the cloud. I just wanted a more flexible, configurable NAS.

Also, small complaint is that the power saving feature can't set up a schedule. With the NAS client software starting up the NAS at PC boot up, Windows backup starts up too fast for the drive to be ready on the network and fails. Thus I am usually starting the backup manually after the drive is on the network.

Other Thoughts: I'm happy with the transfer speed, just wish it was more configurable.

2 out of 5 eggsSuch a shame

Pros: Easy to set up. Reasonable price. Small unit. Built-in media transcoding is a great idea. Web interface is decent, but not great.
The mobile app, while sub-par, was extremely useful! One of the main reasons I got this over a normal NAS is to stream my media to my mobile devices. That is the one feature I will really miss.

Cons: 1) The Pogoplug media transcoding is incredibly slow, and the results are mediocre. After just a few attempts at using the built-in encoding capabilities I disabled them completely and started doing it manually on my PC. Thus turning my Cloudstor into a regular NAS.
2) My settings, such as the auto-encode options and enabling devices like Xbox 360, kept getting reverted. Every couple weeks I had to log back in to the website and fix my settings. And NO, this was not the result of:
3) The unit required restarting every few weeks, as it would become inaccessible to the network. Naturally, this often occurred just when I needed my data most, but couldn't physically access my unit to restart it.
4) Once a media file has undergone the transcoding process it is incredibly difficult to find the original copy, due to the database structure on the drive. This is a serious problem when the device keeps reverting your settings and transcodes things you didn't want it to

Other Thoughts: Finally: MY UNIT DIED AFTER 6 MONTHS!
The hard drive is fine. I've verified that by inserting it into my PC. Although, since they use some proprietary formatting due to the OS installed on the drive, all of my data is now inaccessible, unless of course I get another Cloudstor!
There is no spindown, sleep, power-saving mode. The only power-saving feature of the unit is to have it automatically turn off when your main PC turns off. This is a ridiculous option, because the point of this device is to provide networked storage completely independent of your PC. Not to mention, this feature did not even work properly on my unit.
The Pogoplug Cloudstor seemed like such a good idea on paper... Too bad it just didn't deliver.

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice! & Fast. Easy 2 use

Pros: Finally Written documentation & its beautiful. And Tech support is pretty good including their online help.
I re purchased the unit since the docs are done. It's a very fast & easy unit 2 use. There are just a few tiny bugs 2 be fixed in the upcoming firware update but the unit works just fine with out. Makes a wonderful Family & Friends website 4 videos & pictures even files. Transfers are pretty fast and i set aside a section 2 watchvideos thru my WD live HD units)
love this thing! Thanku Bruce.

Cons: Wish transcoding a full video say 700 megs was faster that takes a faster cpu. they did a pretty decent job!

Other Thoughts: I loved this unit anyway, I'm very greatful 2 their service mngr Bruce he hung in there every step of the way (and i gave him h... haha) making me a happy camper. Every family should own one 2 keep up with their family & friends. Thank u Newegg & Buffalo (for a very easy 2 use product). Hope the next model has evena faster cpu (just for transcoding)
